FINANCIAL AIDFINANCIAL AIDThe primary purpose of the Financial Aid Office at Fond duLac Tribal and Community College is to provide students witha simplified access to financial assistance to remove thefinancial barriers associated in pursuing their educationalgoals.Overview of Financial AidFinancial aid is designed to supplement the amount studentsand their families are expected to contribute to meet the costof attending college. Sources and amounts of financial aidfunding vary, and each student’s application for financial aid isindividually reviewed to determine eligibility. Eligibility iscalculated by mathematical formulas which determinefinancial need, and the amount is the difference between thetotal cost of attending college for one year and thecontribution of the student and their family. Amounts andeligibility are not randomly selected.Each student applies for financial aid by completing the FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.Financial assistance is awarded for one academic year at atime. The amount and type of aid awarded is dependent uponstudent household information calculated by a formulaestablished by the Department of Education. Since funds formany programs are limited, early application is veryimportant, preferably by April 15 of each year.Application ProcessBeginning January 1 of each year, applicants can completethe Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on line atwww.fafsa.gov. The college’s Title IV Code is: 031291. It isrecommended to have completed your income tax forms fourweeks before completing the FAFSA. After completing andfiling the FAFSA, students will receive a letter from theFinancial Aid Office in about two weeks.Separate applications are required for Federal Direct Loans,Federal PLUS Loans, and scholarships. The mostcomprehensive resource for scholarships is available at theFond du Lac Tribal and Community College website located atwww.fdltcc.edu.Students are encouraged, and in some cases required, to usethe online financial aid forms, resources, and processes to thefullest extent possible. To do this, students provide a currentemail address to the Admissions Office, and then visit theFond du Lac Tribal and Community College Financial Aidwebsite at www.fdltcc.edu.34F O N D D U L A C T R I B A L A N D C O M M U N I T Y C O L L E G E C ATA L O GE-ConsentTo access financial information regarding your studentaccount and financial aid online, you must give permission tothe Business Office and Financial Aid Office to allow electroniccorrespondence. This permission allows us to provide youfinancial aid and account information via email and throughthe E-services site. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community Collegehas a passive, affirmative, voluntary consent policy regardingelectronic transactions. We assume that you are willing andable to receive your financial transaction informationelectronically. You have the right to opt out and request apaper copy of any communication. This request must bemade in writing and submitted to the Fond du Lac Tribal andCommunity College Financial Aid Office.Types of Financial AidFond du Lac Tribal and Community College offers a widerange of financial aid resources to students. Students areencouraged to thoroughly investigate and apply for multiplesources of financial aid. The following financial aid programsare available at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College:GrantsGrants are monetary awards distributed to students, based onfinancial need, according to household financial informationprovided on the FAFSA. Grants do not need to be repaid. Fonddu Lac Tribal and Community College students may beeligible for several types of grants, which includes but is notlimited to: Federal Pell Grant Minnesota State Grant Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant(SEOG) Minnesota Post Secondary Child Care Grant Minnesota G. I. Bill Minnesota Indian Scholarship ProgramWork Study ProgramsAs part of a financial aid award package, some students maybe eligible to work on-campus student jobs or off-campuscommunity service jobs. Most students in Work Studyemployment spend about ten hours per week in their job.Work Study employment is largely based on financial need,and a limited amount is available to students who do notdemonstrate need. Federal Work Study State Work Study Institutional Work Study

Loans are available to Fond du Lac Tribal and CommunityCollege students and/or parents of students. Loans must berepaid, with interest, typically starting after collegegraduation. Fond du Lac Tribal and Community Collegestudents may access a number of loan programs. Federal Subsidized Direct LoanFederal Unsubsidized Direct LoanPLUS LoanStudent Educational Loan Fund (SELF)Private loans through lendersStudents must notify the Financial Aid Office if they arereceiving any type of outside funding (funding not on theiraward letter.) Loan and work-study eligibility may be reducedor eliminated due to receiving outside funding.If you borrow student loans and at any time find that youcan’t make the payment, call your lender. Other repaymentoptions may include a reduced payment, no payments, apayment amount tied to your income, and more repaymentstrategies to keep you out of default.ScholarshipsFond du Lac Tribal and Community College scholarships andexternal merit and need-based scholarships are financial aidoptions.Students research and apply for scholarships on their own.The Financial Aid office staff at Fond du Lac Tribal andCommunity College are available to assist in this process bydirecting students to appropriate sources. Students areencouraged to apply for as many scholarships as possible.Scholarships typically do not need to be repaid.Tribal ScholarshipsMany American Indian tribes have college scholarshipprograms available to enrolled members. Students areencouraged to contact their tribal agency to pursue thepossibilities of scholarships. In Minnesota, the followingreservations have established some form of scholarshipprogram: Fond du Lac, Mille Lacs, Grand Portage, NettLake/Bois Forte, White Earth, Red Lake, Leech Lake, UpperSioux, Lower Sioux, Shakopee Sioux, and Prairie Island.Institutional ScholarshipsFond du Lac Tribal and Community College offers a range ofinstitutional scholarships to current students. Applicationsand information regarding these scholarships are available bycontacting the sponsoring organization of the scholarship.American Indian College FundThe American Indian College Fund awards scholarships totribally affiliated American Indian students. A separateapplication form is required.Faculty Association ScholarshipA scholarship donated by Fond du Lac Tribal and CommunityCollege faculty is awarded to students that are eligible for fewor no grant funds, and show excellence in the classroom.TRIO ScholarshipScholarships are awarded through a competitive process tocurrently active TRIO students. Awards are typically madeeach semester. Funds to support these scholarships are raisedby students and staff through a variety of activities.Human Services Club ScholarshipThe Human Services Club offers two scholarships to clubmembers with financial need who have demonstrated acommitment to the club and to community service.FINANCIAL AIDLoan ProgramsFoundation ScholarshipsEach year, scholarships are awarded by the collegeFoundation to current Fond du Lac Tribal and CommunityCollege students. Applications and information about thesescholarships are available by contacting the Foundation Officeat Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. Newscholarship opportunities occur regularly. DuFaultexemplified the spirit of overcoming obstacles to achievesuccess.Katie Poirier Memorial ScholarshipEstablished to honor a Fond du Lac Tribal and CommunityCollege student whose college experience ended suddenlybefore she could reach her goal of becoming a conservationofficer. FINANCIAL AIDEnbridge ScholarshipEnbridge, Inc. supports the Foundation through itsphilanthropy in support of programs that focus oncommunity, well-being and the environment. EnbridgeScholarships are available for second-year students who havemaintained a cumulative 3.0 grade point average. Priority isgiven to students who are active in their community and/orcollege activities.Members Cooperative Credit Union ScholarshipThe Members Cooperative Credit Union Scholarship isawarded to a currently registered full-time, second-yearstudent who has maintained a cumulative 3.0 grade pointaverage, and is a current member of Members CooperativeCredit Union.Trustee Emeritus Robert Erickson ScholarshipEstablished by Trustee Emeritus Robert Erickson of theMinnesota State Colleges and Universities system to supportpart-time, non-traditional age students.James Oberstar-Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe ScholarshipEstablished by the Mille Lacs of Ojibwe in recognition of longtime Minnesota 8th District Congressman James Oberstar.Awarded to an enrolled member of the Mille Lacs Band ofOjibwe.Community Memorial Hospital ScholarshipAnnual scholarship pledged for American Indian students inthe Nursing Program.Herman and Ruth Wise ScholarshipAwarded to a college student who is an enrollee of the Fonddu Lac Reservation.36Additional SourcesThere is a wide range of additional resources students mayaccess to pay for costs related to a college education. Bill/Veterans BenefitsReservation Scholarship ProgramsRehabilitation ServicesJob Training Partnership Act ProgramPrivate foundations and corporationsDisbursement of FundsFinancial aid funds become available on a designated dayeach semester. Currently, initial disbursement falls on theninth class day, subject to change. All financial aid isdisbursed through Bank Mobile. All grants, scholarships andloans are first used to pay student tuition, fees, books and/orother charges. If a student has remaining financial aid funds, arefund is processed via Bank Mobile based on how thestudent requested the funds.After the initial disbursement day of each term, financial aid istypically disbursed once weekly according to the scheduleavailable at the Business Services Window on campus.Students can monitor when financial aid has been applied totheir account and when a refund has been issued byreviewing their account on the student e-services website.Bank Mobile cards are sent to each student to the address onfile with the college. It is important that students update thecollege with any change of address information.Simon Gooder Man Whitebird ScholarshipMemorial scholarship to honor the decorated war veteran andelder of the Fond du Lac Reservation. Whitebird was the onlyAmerican Indian in his unit during World War II.Financial aid pays for grades of A, B, C, D, and F, but does notpay for grades of I or W.Nada K. Joseph Memorial ScholarshipOffered to tribally enrolled or direct descendent MinnesotaChippewa Tribe students pursuing a career in Public Safety,Criminal Justice, Physical Education, or related fields.Memorial was established to honor an individual whopromoted healthy living and physical activity.Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College maintains anopen-door admission policy, assesses students admitted, andprovides developmental course work and other programs ofassistance to support students’ success. However, studentsmust perform at an acceptable academic level to continueenrollment and to receive financial aid. Students who meet all other eligibility requirements will beeligible to receive financial aid at Fond du Lac Tribal andCommunity College for a maximum of 150% of their programlength (including credits transferred into Fond du Lac Tribaland Community College from other institutions.) Movementinto another program may prolong this time frame. Pleaserefer to the Academic Policies section of the catalog.Refund and Repayment PolicyFinancial aid recipients who completely withdraw from a termprior to the 60% point of that term are subject to the federalreturn of Title IV fund rules for any federal aid not earned andthe MOHE refund calculation for Minnesota state financial aidprograms.The responsibility to repay unearned aid is shared by theinstitution and the student in proportion to the aid each isassumed to possess. The institution’s share is allocated amongthe Title IV programs, before the student’s share, in thefollowing order: Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan, FederalSubsidized Direct Loan, Federal PELL Grant, Federal AcademicCompetitiveness Grant, and Federal SEOG. Any remainingunearned aid is the responsibility of the student, must becollected from the student, and then allocated among theTitle IV programs in the order indicated above.Using MOHE’s refund calculation worksheet, Fond du LacTribal and Community College will also calculate any refundsdue to Minnesota state financial aid programs. Fond du LacTribal and Community College will calculate and return itsshare of unearned Title IV funds and Minnesota Financial AidPrograms no later than 30 days after it determines that thestudent withdrew. Students return their share of unearned aidattributable to a loan under the terms and conditions of thepromissory note.
