The SAR contains a summary of your FAFSAinformation and a calculation of your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) –the number used to determine your federal student aid eligibility. Review yourSAR to see if additional information or corrections are needed. You can alsoaccess your SAR at www.fafsa.gov.The Federal Processor selects a certain number of applicants for a verificationprocess. Evaluate College Costs andFinancial Aid PackagesOne of the most important factorswhen selecting a college is whether theinstitution will meet your educationalneeds. Additionally, you and yourfamily must consider the cost to attendcollege when deciding where to enroll.Cost of Attendance (COA)When planning for college, you needto review the Cost of Attendance(COA), which includes tuition andfees, housing (room and board),transportation, books, supplies andpersonal expenses. If you plan tolive at home, the estimated cost forattending CUNY full-time for ninemonths includes tuition and feesplus approximately 7,200 for allother costs. If you plan to live awayfrom home, the estimated cost isapproximately 20,000.various college scholarships. Forfederal financial aid, your EFC iscalculated the same way for everycollege.Financial NeedFinancial need is the differencebetween Cost of Attendance andyour Expected Family Contribution.COA – EFC Financial NeedCUNY Net Price CalculatorTo help determine the financialaid you may receive, a Net PriceCalculator is available on theCUNY website. This tool calculatesan estimated financial aid awardpackage along with an estimatedcost of tuition and fees. The NetPrice Calculator also helps compareExpected Family Contribution (EFC)Your Expected Family Contribution(EFC) is the amount you and yourfamily can reasonably contributetoward yearly educational costs basedon the information you supply on yourFAFSA. Factors such as your family’sincome, number in household, certainassets, taxes paid and the number offamily members attending college areused to compute your EFC.Your EFC is used to determine theamount of federal financial aid youmay qualify for, such as Pell, FederalWork-Study and subsidized federalloans. To apply forscholarships at individual CUNYcolleges, students are generallyrequired to complete a FAFSA and,sometimes, an individual scholarshipapplication. Information about thesescholarships can be found at thewebsite listed above.Tuition Payment PlanCUNY colleges participate in theTuitionPay monthly installmentpayment plan to help families budgettuition and fee expenses. For detailsabout the program visitwww.tuitionpay.com/cuny or theOffice of the Bursar at yourCUNY college.New York City CouncilMerit Based ScholarshipThe New York City Council Merit BasedScholarship is awarded to eligible NYChigh school students who have proventheir ability to succeed academically.Students are required to have graduatedfrom a NYC high school with a minimumof an 80 academic average and futureawards require you to maintain acumulative grade point average of at leasta 3.0 (B). The scholarship will provide 800 for the 2014-2015 academic year.Funding is determined by the New YorkCity Council. Thesescholarships are based on a varietyof factors. To search for scholarships,you should use free search servicessuch as the collegeboard.comwebsite. TAP grants are based on theapplicant’s and his/her family’sNew York State net taxable income.Undergraduate TAP awards rangefrom 500 to 5,165 annually. Priorto completing your TAP applicationyou must first file the FAFSA.

Part-Time Assistance for New YorkState ResidentsNew York State provides two financial aidprograms for students pursuing a degreeon a part-time basis (6 to 11 creditsper semester): the Part-Time TuitionAssistance Program and the Aid forPart-Time Study Program. The amount ofeach grant is determined by the student’sfamily income, number of credits takenand the availability of funds from NewYork State. In addition to the TAPapplication you must submit a CUNYsupplement form. For more informationvisit cuny.edu/financialaid and click thelink for ‘Information and Resources.’New York State Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)Incentive ProgramThe New York State (NYS) STEMProgram provides a full tuitionscholarship to NYS high schoolgraduates who ranked in the top 10percent of their graduating class whoare pursuing a CUNY associates orbachelors degree in an approved STEMprogram. Applicants must agree to workin a STEM field in New York State for aminimum of 5 years after graduation.For more information visit www.hesc.ny.gov and choose ‘Paying For College’ and‘State Grants, Scholarships and Awards.’CUNY Opportunity Programs:SEEK, CD and ASAPSEEK (Search for Education, Elevationand Knowledge) is a New York Stateprogram available at CUNY four-yearcolleges which is designed to assiststudents who are both academicallyand financially disadvantaged.Other State Scholarships and AwardsNew York State offers a number ofspecial scholarships for students whoexcel in high school or plan to pursueparticular academic objectives.For information about thesescholarships visit www.hesc.ny.gov.CD (College Discovery) is the companionprogram funded by New York City atmost community colleges. Admissioninto the SEEK or CD program is part ofthe CUNY admission process.www.StudentAid.govASAP (Accelerated Study in AssociateProgram) is offered at most CUNYcommunity colleges to allow motivatedassociate degree students to completetheir degree more quickly andefficiently.Federal Student Aid ProgramsTo be eligible for federal financial aidprograms, students must: Be a United States citizen oreligible noncitizen. Fill out a FAFSA. Gain admission to a degree-grantingprogram. Maintain good academic standingand make satisfactory progresstoward the completion of a degree. Not be in default on a federalstudent loan or owe a refund offinancial aid. Register for at least six creditsexcept for Pell Grants, which canbe awarded if you are registeredfor as little as one credit.Federal Pell GrantsFor the 2014–2015 academic year,Pell Grants provide up to 5,730per year and are awarded to parttime and full-time undergraduatestudents who have not yet earneda bachelor’s degree. Students areeligible to receive a Pell Grant for upto 12 full-time semesters or the parttime equivalent.Federal Supplemental EducationalOpportunity Grants (FSEOG)If you demonstrate exceptionalfinancial need, CUNY may awardyou funds from FSEOG. Funds arelimited and preference is given tostudents who receive a Pell Grant.Federal Work-Study (FWS)The Federal Work-Study programprovides you with an opportunityto be placed into a part-time jobthat accommodates your academicschedule. If you are awarded FederalWork-Study, you may be placed inan eligible off-campus or on-campusjob. Each college’s Financial AidOffice can help you find a FederalWork-Study job.LoansFederal Direct LoansThe Direct Loan program allows youto borrow funds from the federal8 WWW.CUNY.EDU/FINANCIALAIDgovernment to help cover your costof attendance. Like all other loans,these loans must be repaid withinterest.There are two types of Directloans available, Subsidized andUnsubsidized. To qualify for aSubsidized Direct Loan you mustdemonstrate financial need. Interestis not charged on these loans as longas you are enrolled at least half-timebut will accrue interest after yougraduate or drop below half-time.If you do not demonstrate financialneed, you may still qualify for anUnsubsidized Direct Loan however,interest will begin to accrue as soonas the loan is disbursed.To apply for a Federal Direct Loan,you must: Complete the FAFSA. Request the loan directly fromthe Office of Financial Aid at thecollege. Complete an entrance interview,which provides you withinformation regarding the loan’sterms and conditions.Additional information: You must sign a promissory note. If you request a Federal DirectLoan you may decline the loanlater by notifying the FinancialAid Office at the college. You do not need a co-signer toqualify for a Federal Direct Loan,and there is no credit check. Interest rates for Subsidized andUnsubsidized Federal Direct

Loans issued through June 30,2015 are 4.66 percent. Repayment periods vary from 10 to30 years. To apply for a Federal PerkinsLoan you must complete the FAFSA.Federal PLUS Loans for ParentsYour parents may be eligible to applyfor a Federal Plus Loan to help pay yourcollege expenses. You, the dependentstudent, must complete the FAFSAbefore your parent(s) can apply for aPLUS Loan.Additional information: PLUS loan borrowers are subject tocredit checks. For the 2014–2015 academic yearthe interest rate on Federal PLUSLoans is 7.21 percent. The interest rate may berecalculated on July 1 each year. Contact the Office of Financial Aidat the college for more informationabout Federal PLUS Loans. Repayment on PLUS Loans begins30 days after disbursement. Yourparent(s) can defer payment as longas you are enrolled at least halftime, although interest will continueto accrue.Veteran Education ProgramsCUNY welcomes and supports veterans,reservists and survivors and theirfamily members. There are programs tohelp veterans finance their educationfrom the federal and New York Stategovernments. Financial Aid EligibilityAttendanceTo qualify for financial aid youmust begin attending your classes.Attendance information is collectedfrom your instructors and is usedto determine whether you beganattendance in each of your classes.The credits for unattended classes willnot be counted when calculating yourenrollment status for determining yourfinancial aid eligibility.WithdrawalFederal financial aid is awarded withthe expectation that you will attendschool for the entire period for whichthe awards were intended. If youwithdraw from all of your classes beforeyou have completed the semester, thecollege will determine the portion ofyour federal awards you are entitledto receive according to a prescribedattendance formula.Satisfactory Academic Progress(SAP)In accordance with federal andstate guidelines and CUNYpolicy, you must be makingsatisfactory progress in yourprogram of study in order toremain eligible for federal andstate awards. Your academicrecord will be evaluated at leastonce each year according to thesatisfactory progress standardsestablished for each financialaid program.
