Classes at the college started Thursday, Aug. 16.The Housing and Student Activities Office was busy hosting"welcome week" activities forstudents living on campus thatincluded a cookout at HendersonPark, “Inflatable Fun” on a twolane water slide and hypnotistMichael Reeves.Welcome week activities forthe students continued to be hosted in the evenings with studentsbeing invited to a pool tournament, movie night, swimmingpool party and bowling outing.Students had an opportunity toparticipate in a welcome weekgame called “60 seconds” onMonday evening.The Native Americans Serving Non-Tribal Institutions Program (NASNTI) sponsored aCampus Photo Scavenger Huntcontest during welcome weekactivities.For more information aboutcampus activities please contactHousing/Student Activities Office at (405) 382-9604.Seminole State College students participate in "welcome week" activitieson campus as the fall semester started.Area Students Participate in SSC Upward Bound Hawaii Trip over summerSeminole State College Upward Bound Bridge students and chaperonestoured the Hawaii Volcanoes Jaggar National Park and Museum while ontheir recent trip.Seminole State College had sixteen Upward Bound Bridge students recently return home fromtheir week-long global studiesclass trip to Hawaii.For six weeks, 140 students fromSeminole, Pottawatomie, Hughesand Okfuskee counties stayed onthe SSC campus as a part of thecollege’s Upward Bound summerresidential program. Sixteen ofthose were “Bridge” students whowere recent high school graduatesenrolled in college courses overthe summer.Ending the summer school session, Bridge students who passedeach of their classes with a “B”or better were eligible to participate in the Summer Bridge GlobalStudies Class. The destination andlength of the tour are determinedby the amount of funds raised bythe students throughout their fouryear association with the program.The class included courseworkat SSC and a one-week trip to Hawaii where the students learnedabout Hawaiian culture, historyand toured the Hawaii VolcanoNational Park.“For most students participatingin the program this is their first opportunity to fly and see the ocean.It’s an opportunity for them to dosomething they never thought theywould be able to do. It has proven to be a great retention tool andvaluable learning experience forparticipants,” said Upward BoundI Coordinator Leslie Sewell.The Seminole State College Upward Bound is a federally-funded(continued on page 6)

SSC Professor of Art KellyKirk is coordinating this trip. Tourcosts vary from 2,900 to 3,157.A nine-day Western Ireland andLondon trip, slated for June 11 – 21,2013 will take travelers throughoutIreland, Dublin, Wales and London.Kirk is also coordinating this tripand the tour costs vary from 3,966to 4,336.Kirk, will host an introductoryclass on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.in Boren Library, Room 100 on theSSC campus for interested studentsand members of the public.He stresses that communitymembers are invited to participatein all of the trips. “You don’t needto be a SSC student to enjoy thisopportunity.
