69TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE DEDICATION*SARAH TILTON FRIES, MPH(1938-2017)With the focus of this 69th conference on innovation andimpact, it is fitting to dedicate this meeting in honor ofSarah Tilton Fries. A devoted SOPHE member for more than30 years, Sarah was a health education champion with avision to transform the impact of health education in theworkplace and society.Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Sarah received herbachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1960 and herMPH degree from San Jose State University in 1985. Sheand her husband, James F. Fries, MD (SOPHE 2007 HonoraryFellow), founded Healthtrac, Inc., which produced the firsttailored cost-effective, health-improvement program tobe widely implemented. Founded in health educationtheory, Healthtrac interventions include validated healthrisk assessments, tailored feedback based on participantrisks and readiness to change, and serial tracking andreinforcement of healthful behaviors. Sarah guided healtheducation messaging for Healthtrac participants andserved as the company’s president for 12 years.In 1991, partly with proceeds from the sale of Healthtrac,Sarah and Jim launched the James F. and Sarah T. FriesFoundation to honor contributions to the health of thepublic. The foundation’s endowment provides two prizesannually, including the Elizabeth Fries Health EducationAward given at SOPHE’s conference each year. The 25,000 prize honors “a health educator who has madea substantial contribution to advancing the field of healtheducation or health promotion through research, programdevelopment, or program delivery.” Sarah attendedSOPHE’s annual conference for the award and lecturefor 25 years, despite declining health from malignantmelanoma and multiple brain metastases.
