President’s Updateby Lisa Lewis - Club PresidentI’m so glad it’s finally fall, as I’m sure we all are after theweather-ravaged summer we had. But not only are the(relatively) cooler fall days almost here, of course wehave all the upcoming holidays to look forward to! Before we get too busy with holiday prep, family gatherings and shopping, we still have a few chances to gettogether and enjoy our Club time.Over the summer, we had several fun and informativeevents. In July we had a fantastic time on our Drive &Dine to Daytona. We packed the penthouse and enjoyeda peaceful summer afternoon, with beautiful beachviews, pizza and Orlando Brewing beer. Thanks again toEd and Renee Supinski, Millenia Motors, Driver’s ChoiceMotors, Hagerty Insurance, and all the volunteers whohelped make it a great day. Thanks to Joe Pennisi and Jim LaPiana for leading theAugust Club Meeting while I was enjoying my crosscountry adventure. If you love driving, like I do, you oweit to yourself to drive as far as you safely can (and canafford!) at least once in your lifetime. No matter whatdirection you go, we have a beautiful, diverse country tolearn about and enjoy. I plan to do it several more times,God willing! Our presence at The Ace Café has taken hold! We’ve usually had 50 or 60 cars there each month, and it gives usyet another monthly gathering to enjoy. The growingpains are over, and we’ve settled in to pretty much takeover the place on the third Monday night, even thoughit’s not officially a Citrus event. If you haven’t tried it – oryou went the first time or two and expected perfection– please come out whenever it fits into your schedule. At the end of August, Zotz Racing hosted us for anotherinformative Advanced Driver’s Ed session. Then we hada follow-up session in September at Driver’s Choice Motors, to emphasize what was learned and help new drivers get ready for our DE at Roebling Road in October. Thanks to Bert and team for another great DE, enjoyedby track veterans and several new drivers who gave ushigh marks for safety and fun.We had to postpone our Volunteer Appreciation partyplanned in September, due to one unwelcome guest,Irma. But when Bert & Anne Del Villano graciously hosted almost 60 of us in October, we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing evening filled with good friends and greatfood, thanks to Travis Young and his whole family. Endless appreciation goes to all of you who help out when-Tel: (407) 678-6789ever you can, whether at one-offevents, routinely at DEs or Autocrosses, or helping with all theprep work behind the scenes. We certainly exemplify the Clubmotto: It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.0000One thing that did go off without a hitch in September– since it wasn’t held anywhere in Florida! – was TreffenAsheville. A few Citrus members got to enjoy the trip tothe Smokies and had a great time making new friends. The next Treffen will be held in New Mexico, April 25-29,2018.While we’ve enjoyed an active summer, please markyour calendars for the remaining events of 2017: Nov 4: Fill-a-frunk for Loaves & Fishes. Please registerat ClubRegistration.net to help fill Loaves & Fishes’pantry, so they can continue to help those in need. It’s easy to load up your frunks and trunks at DollarTree (everything really is a dollar!), and then drive upto L&F and easily drop off the supplies, then join usfor lunch. Registration closes November 3. Nov 6: November Club Meeting. Our monthly meeting will again be held at Orlando Brewing and sponsored by Zotz Racing! We’ll have a fun time – with ofcourse plenty of beer, and pizza – and all you haveto do is register at ClubReg to get in for free. Nov 9-12: Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) at Daytona. Come out and enjoy a time machine of automotive wonder. There will be a Cars & Coffee on Saturday, Nov 11. Visit our calendar for full details and todownload the entry form for your car. Dec 3: Holiday Party at Enzo’s on the Lake. Plan toenjoy our annual end-of-year celebration. See fulldetails on our calendar and on ClubReg. Pleaseregister and pay at ClubReg, and pick your entrée.We must limit it to 100, and walk-ups will not be allowed. A charitable donation to the Russell Homefor Atypical Children will be greatly appreciated(checks only)! As always, please note all the upcoming events listedin the Spiel and on our calendar. Make the most of theupcoming fall and winter family time and get preparedfor all-things-holiday. Just don’t forget to come out andenjoy as many events as you can – and never forget toenjoy the drive!!Lisa LewisPresident - Florida Citrus Region PCAGerman ExcellencePage 5

Treffen Ashevilleby Jim LaPianaWe had an idea that this Treffen would be verypopular, so we coordinated with a few friendsahead of time that had expressed an interest ingoing. Decisions were made on the choices offered for the drives and meals on each of the daysso the registration process would be quick. Thatand getting on the Treffen NA website to register as soon as it opened turned out to be a goodmove as the event sold out in under an hour! AWhen the Asheville Treffen was announced with total of 455 people and 230 Porsches registered.the base hotel being The Omni Grove Park Inn, weknew that we were going to go. The Grove ParkInn itself is historic and wonderful, but its accessto downtown Asheville and proximity to the greatdriving roads like Blue Ridge Parkway makes it theperfect headquarter resort. If you enjoy driving your Porsche to exotic locations amongst a fun loving group of fellowPorsche enthusiasts, being pampered by the accommodations and staff at a luxury resort, havingone best meal ever day after day all in beautifulsurroundings punctuated by lively drives to scenic destinations then you owe it to yourself totake in a Treffen North America. What we didn’t expect was to find so many connections to the Florida Citrus Region. Leslie Sikorski our FLC Social Chair is the Treffen registrar, David O’Neal our former Zone 12 rep is the TreffenPage 8German Excellencewww.germanexcellence.com

Sunday December 3, 2017Enzo’s on the Lake1130 S US HW 17-92Longwood, FLRegister on ClubRegistration.netNA Chair who heads up the event and Bob Herrmann who is a founding member of the hostingAppalachian Region who helped coordinate theevent locally and was a FLC Region member chairing two of the Zone Fests held at the Lakeside Innin Mount Dora. It was good to see so many familiar faces and to know that the event was being soresponsibly led.For the drive up to Asheville from the Orlandoarea we made a mid trip stopover in Savannah, which will be familiar to anyone who has participated in a Roebling Road DE with the club. There we stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott inthe downtown Savannah Historic District. Nexttime you’re in Savannah you might want to checkout the Crystal Beer Parlor - especially if you likecraft beer and creative dishes. This may become atheme of the trip actually.Tel: (407) 678-6789Arriving at The Omni Grove Park Inn, lets just callit the GPI, a day before the official start of Treffenwe were lucky to get a room in the historic sectionoverlooking the golf course, the spa and downtown Asheville with the Smokey Mountains as abackdrop. It is beautiful.German ExcellencePage 9

Treffen is organized into four days, the first set asidefor checking and settling in with registration and a reception in the evening. Since we arrived the day before, we had the morning to explore on our own. Bynow it probably won’t be a surprise that we went to abrewery. Took the free tour at Sierra Nevada, it takesaround two hours and includes a walk through thegardens in addition to the brewery and a samplingof eight of their beer styles in a private tasting room. The samples are pretty small, about 2oz, so you getsomewhere around a pint if you try all of them. This isa very impressive facility with beautiful grounds withlots of room for expansion. Totally guessing, I’d esOne of the things that has changed about Asheville in timate that the budget had to be over 350 million.the last decade is the growth of the craft beer indus- The food in their public tasting room is excellent andtry/community there. When we first started going to reasonably priced.Asheville in the late 90’s through the mid 2000’s therewere three breweries and Highland Brewing was kindenough to give us a tour when asked. Now if youdo a search for brewery in Google Maps in Ashevilleyou’ll get a list of about 32. A field guide to breweriesfound in our room lists 51in the area. It is a craft beermagnet for local start-ups and national brands alike.Brewery tours, gastropub food and tons of souveniroptions are now common. Don’t get us started wellthe ship has probably sailed on that already. The first and third days are driving days and start witha Continental Plus breakfast and quick drive to thetour departure point, located at a local outlet mall’sgenerous parking lot. The Appalachian Region droveeach of the tour routes as a group to prepare for andexperiment with the number of cars that worked ontheir mountain roads and highways. You may haveseen them in the regional events listed in Panoramain the month leading up to Treffen. After the return tothe hotel after the drive, there is time to buff up andPage 10German Excellencewww.germanexcellence.com

then a group dinner that was at a different locationeach evening. The second day is scheduled as a “Navigator’s DayOff” where you could choose a bus tour to various locations or an open drive on your own option. Thatday started with a buffet breakfast that has to be seenand experienced to be believed. The location is onthe upper floor of the rear of the Vanderbilt wing giving a spectacular view. To be honest we were so overwhelmed by the brunch that I completely forgot tocapture the moment in pictures and borrowed thetwo below from the GPI website and tripadvisor.Lake Lure was our first drive, and included a boat tourlunch at the Lake Lure Inn and Spa built in 1927. Theroute took great advantage of the local twisties inDinner the night after the first drive was a “Dinecluding a drive past Chimney Rock.Around Town” starting with a coach bus ride to adowntown Asheville restaurant, there were six tochoose from. We picked Pack’s Tavern right next toPack Square Park and weren’t disappointed. The foodwas perfectly cooked, the restaurant was charmingand the staff was very attentive especially for a largegroup of over seventy-five people which could havebeen stressful. But they made us feel relaxed andseemed genuinely happy to have us there. Ah, thebeer selection was sadly limited, but happily werevery good choices of local brews and on tap. All wasgood. We’ll be back.Tel: (407) 678-6789German ExcellencePage 11

On the second day, the NDO, the couple we travelledwith went to the Biltmore House which is just spectacular and a great way to spend most of a day. Butwe’ve visited Biltmore at least six times, so we optedto go local and enjoy a new to us BBQ restaurant andsurprise, a couple of breweries. We started off at NewBelgium Brewing which is located in Asheville neardowntown and on the French Broad River and tooktheir tour for the first time. The drive on the last day took us on The Rattlerthrough Hot Springs, where our friend Nort Northamhas a home, to Wheels Through Time. A great museum in a metal building dedicated to motorcycles withwell done diorama style vignette displays. Oh, whata drive that was. We’ll do that again too. Lunch wasat the Laurel Ridge Country Club, a beautiful CountryClub and they served a delicious meal.Afterwards it was time for lunch, so we asked somepeople on the New Be
