Yet for somany teenagers and youngadults with autism the highschool dance is one of somany rites of passage thatnever come their way. ButTerri Manzione, NSSA’sCoordinator of Outreach andQuality Management andmother of a son with autism,decided it was high timeto bring the high schooldance to NSSA.Terri’s plan for a dancesparked a surge of interest,drawing volunteers fromwithin the ranks of NSSAand from the community atDancing up a storm are NSSA’s students and adult clientslarge. In the true spirit of theseason, Commack High School opened its doors and for the students and young adults in NSSA’s programs.hearts for a wonderful Holiday Dance and Celebration High school student volunteers from Commack HS,North Shore HS, and Great Hollow Middle Schoolsigned on and gave whole-heartedly of themselves toensure a festive evening for our students and clients.There was initial uncertainty among many of theNSSA guests, but the NSSA siblings and staff, and thestudent volunteers drew them out and autism provedto be no match for the joy and fun of the evening. Inno time the celebration began in earnest, with NSSAteacher and DJ Matt Figuccio creating a musicalatmosphere that was impossible to resist. With speakers pounding and lights twinkling, Matt had the crowddancing joyfully across the floor, in a happy congaline, under the limbo stick, and in a huge circle forCotton Eyed Joe. A Toast to Huntington Bay DentalHuntington Bay dental (HBd) kindly hosted a2 Annual Wine Tasting to benefit NSSA. A growingnumber of NSSA students and clients have theirdental needs met by dr. Dinner for Our Childrenon Saturday, April 9th NSSA celebrated its 19th Annualdinner for our Children at the Crest Hollow CountryClub, Woodbury. over 350 guests attended the galaevent, which also serves as theceremony for graduating students.This year daniel Mannionwas honored for completing hisstudies at the Martin C. Thefundraiser was embraced by many friends,families, teachers, and neighbors, and was featuredin Newsday and several other local newspapers.By the close of the season, the Vikings hadscored 29 touchdowns and raised more than 22,000 for autism!
