2015 EASTERN ILLINOIS BASEBALLOVC COMMISSIONER’S CUPEIU was second in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup for the 2013-14 schoolyear. The award is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conferencesponsored championships.Since the new format was adopted six years ago, the Panthers have wonthree of the six OVC Commissioner’s Cups while placing second the otherthree years. EIU won in championship in 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2012-13.

Perry began serving Eastern Illinois University aspresident on July 1, 2007, following 36 years of service to highereducation in Texas.Perry, who was born and raised in the Midwest, received hisM.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign. In his subsequent career at Texas A&M University, heproceeded through the tenured faculty ranks in mathematics, andthen served in increasingly responsible administrative roles involvingmultiple areas of budget, personnel and planning for the university,academic affairs and facilities. While at Texas A&M, he receivedrecognition for his service in teaching and in administration.As an undergraduate, Perry attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri, where hemajored in mathematics and history, and played basketball. 2015 EASTERN ILLINOIS BASEBALLJIMSCHMITZu Jim Schmitz won his 500th game at EIU in 2014 with a win over Michigan State on February 28Jimmy Schmitz was hired in the fall of 1994 to guide the Eastern Illinois baseball program. 20 seasons later, the skipper has wonmore games than any other EIU baseball coach in addition to taking the program to unprecedented heights. On Feb. 28, 2014,he won his 500th game as the EIU head coach.The three-time Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year has won four regular-season titles – most recently in 2009 – and has takenthe Panthers to the NCAA Tournament on two occasions, both in 1999 and 2008. In addition to the OVC titles, Schmitz won back-toback west division championships when EIU played in The Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference) from 1995-96.Schmitz has seen the on-field accomplishments of his players come to fruition as 72 players have earned all-conference accoladesincluding 36 players who have earned first-team distinction. Three players have also earned player of the year honors in Matt Marzec(1998), Pete Pirman (2002) and Jordan Kreke (2009) during his tenure. John Larson also captured pitcher of the year honors in 1999while Ben Duke (2001) and Brant Valach (2012) earned newcomer of the year recognition.Under the tutelage of Schmitz, 21 players have been taken in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Players Draft since taking the helmof the program in 1995. A total of 10 players have been drafted in the last five seasons, most recently Matt Borens in the 2014 draft.When Tyler Kehrer went 48th overall in the 2009 MLB Draft, he became the highest Panther picked since 1988.The 2012 season saw the Panther pitching staff post the best earned run average in the OVC for the third consecutive season. EIUhas posted the best ERA in the OVC in four of the last seven seasons. The Panthers ranked second in ERA during the 2009 season andfourth in 2013, respectively.In addition to the individual and team accomplishments over the years, Schmitz has reached levels of success unseen before hisarrival in Charleston. In 1999, the Panthers advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history. EIUfinished third in the Waco Regional and upset No. 21 Arizona in the process. 2015 EASTERN ILLINOIS BASEBALLSchmitz inherited a program in 1995 without any returningstarting pitchers and captured the west division ofthe conference, posting a 28-19 record (.596 winningpercentage) – the best winning percentage since 1988.Schmitz would go on to win the west division title thefollowing year, igniting the start of a successful tenure asthe Panther skipper.Off the field, Schmitz believes in giving back to thecommunity as his team participates in a service programevery fall and spring. Each fall the team assists withlocal Habitat for Humanity projects that benefit theunderprivileged. His teams have also participated in LakeLand College’s Friends for a Day service program.Prior to EIU, Schmitz was an assistant coach under formerChicago Cub Don Kessinger at the University of Mississippifrom 1991-94. Schmitz assisted in landing the nation’sNo. 17 recruiting class in 1993 – as ranked by CollegiateBaseball.Schmitz was head coach at the University of Cincinnati from1987-90 where he guided the 1987 squad to a programbest 31 wins and back-to-back winning seasons for the firsttime in the Metro Conference. Nine of his Bearcats signedprofessional contracts.Schmitz landed his fist head coaching job at Wilmington(Ohio) College where he led the program from 1984-86. 2015 EASTERN ILLINOIS BASEBALLJASONANDERSONuAssistant Coach 3rd Season at EIU Illinois, 2012Jason Anderson was named assistant baseball coach at Eastern Illinois in December of 2012 following 11 seasons of professionalbaseball, including three seasons in Major League Baseball. Anderson serves as the team’s pitching coach.In 2014, Anderson coached Troy Barton to all-conference honors as the senior closer led the OVC in saves during conference actionwith six. Barton finished the year with eight saves, tied for third most in single-season school history. Anderson also saw Matt Borensbecome only the second pitcher in school history to throw 100 or more strikeouts in a season, joining former MLB All-Star and schoolrecord holder Marty Pattin. Borens was also taken in 11th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft by theNew York Yankees.During the 2013 season, Anderson saw the pitching staff post the fourth best earned run average in the conference despite losing theNo. 1 and No. 2 starting pitchers on the team only weeks before the season started due to injury. The pitching staff finished the yearranked second in the OVC in fewest earned runs allowed while being tied for the third fewest walks.Anderson also coached Jake Johansmeier to All-OVC Newcomer Team honors while Joe Greenfield was taken in the 2013 MajorLeague Basebal
