I am sure there was quite a bit ofmoney spent on presents, a great deal offood and drink consumed, and by now, even a few New Year’s resolutions havealready been broken.Over the next few months there are agreat deal of educational opportunities. The FTGA will be holding its TurfSeminars throughout the state. Theseseminars present a great opportunityto obtain some PDI points and CEU’s,especially Core CEU’s. For those able tomake the trip, the GCSAA EducationalConference and GIS will be held in LasVegas at the end of February. The eventwill include numerous educationalseminars, workshops, peer interactions aswell as the trade show.We will be hosting the Florida Receptionin the Jet Night Club at the Mirage Hotelon Thursday night, March 1. I can’tpromise that we will have all the fireworkswe had last year, but there will be somegreat food, drinks, and fun!The GCSAA National Championshipand Golf Classic will be held the weekbefore the GCSAA Conference andShow. Good luck to the Florida ChapterTeam of Steve Bernard, Bob Harper,Steve Wright, and Deron Zendt. Thereare new incentives this year to play in theevent that will benefit GCSAA-affiliatedChapters. The first is the Chapter TeamCompetition which will split 75 percentof the entry fees between the gross andnet wining teams’ chapters. Second, theToro Company has agreed to pay chapters 200 per registered participant whohas not played in the last two GCSAAChampionships. There is no limit to thenumber of participants per chapter. Bothincentives are great ways to make somemoney for your chapter. We are continuing to make great progresswith the Golf BMP certification process. We received a letter of accreditationfrom the Department of EnvironmentalProtection in November. The BMPTesting Committee has met often andMark Kann,Presidentis finalizing a presentation that willincorporate much of the informationneeded for certification. The test for certification in the GolfBMPs is broken down into three sections.Superintendents will have the optionof taking each section separately or allat once. Keep in mind that to take thefull training and test in a day will takeabout 7-8 hours. It is our hope that, bythe time you receive this issue, somesuperintendents will have had theopportunity to become certified throughthe process. The Seven Rivers GCSAwill be sponsoring one of the first eventsthat will provide a full day of Golf BMPtraining and testing on March 22. Thesession will take place at the Universityof Florida Plant Science Research andEducation Unit in Citra.I hope everyone is taking advantage ofthe work on government relations beingdone by numerous individuals. TheGCSAA has been extremely diligent atsending out action alerts and form lettersthat can be quickly filled out and sent tothe appropriate legislators. Thank you toChava McKeel and Ralph Dain from theGCSAA for their efforts on many of theissues affecting the Florida GCSA. I knowthat Ralph has made a great impact byattending chapter meetings and allowingmembers to email the letters at thosemeetings. We try not to bombard our membershipwith emails, so when you see an emailfrom the FGCSA, please be sure to read it.We are only as strong as our membership,so please take the time to act when actionis needed. Every letter counts!1

C O V E R S T O RYMiles Grant Country Club199 Years in theMakingView from behind the 18th green.Photo by Joel Jackson. The Miles Grant CC golf courseopened in 1972, but the landon which it stands was part ofa Spanish land grant from theKing of Spain to settler SamuelMiles in 1813. Five square milesof land bordering the Santa LuciaRiver (now St. Lucie) was given ascompensation for shipping andlogistical support rendered byMiles to the Spanish territorialgovernment. When visiting the clubback in October to interviewsuperintendent Harry Hanson,CGCS for this cover story, I became8intrigued with the name of theclub from the logo at the clubhouseentrance. It was a large oval withthe name Miles Grant, the pictureof an old sailing ship and the date1813. Originally I surmised thatthe club’s name was for a Mr. MilesGrant and a subsequent Googlesearch didn’t bear much fruit. When checking out the club’swebsite and amenities, I noticedthe Samuel Miles Tavern wasincluded under dining options, andwhen I googled Samuel Miles andthe year 1813 I hit paydirt.Miles originally established asawmill on the property to producebuilding materials for the influxof settlers who soon followed andthe colonization of the east centralFlorida coastal region was underway. Coincidentally, a sawmill wasalso a key factor in our story on thehistory of the Shingle Creek GC inthe Fall Florida Green.Nearly two centuries later, wefind the established residentialgolf community of Miles Grantproviding social and recreationalactivities to the folks living inthe houses and condominiumsbordering the golf course. There’sTHE FLORIDA GREEN

the 18-hole, par-64 golf course sporting twolegitimate par-fives, five par-fours, 10 par-threes andone hole that can play as a par-four or five. Havingridden the course with Hanson, I can tell you it isa very challenging walk in the park. The course isperhaps a little more forgiving of errant shots since2004, when the multiple hurricane hits destroyedover 300 trees. Also, in side-by-sidetest-strip applications, Hansonreports that the new herbicide,Specticle, “worked quiteWELL” in preventing goosegrass infestations.Since the course is bordered by residences, Hansonmanages his maintenance programs judiciouslyto balance the aesthetics with the cultural needsof the turf. He uses a combination of organic andsynthetic fertilizer blends applied lightly in morefrequent applications, all dependent on soil-testingresults. On average, greens are fed monthly and tees, fairways and roughs four-eight times a year. Totalapplied nitrogen and phosphorus fall well within theguidelines in the Golf BMPs and state fertilizer rules. With an active golf program for the members,Hanson offsets the wear and compaction on theplaying surfaces by hollow-tine aerifying the coursethree times a year. Hanson also lightly groomsand top-dresses the putting surfaces frequentlyfor consistency. The putting surfaces are edgedperiodically and any Tifway 419 runners are pulledto control encroachment.Since the golf course is located on a coastalsand ridge and susceptible to mole crickets andnematodes, Hanson ran a Curfew experimentto find an effective product he could rotate withChipco Choice to control both pests. Keeping costsand the budget in mind, he now treats 10 acres peryear with Curfew, alternating between front andback nine hot spots. He treats the remaining criticalareas with Chipco Choice. Also, in side-by-sidetest-strip applications, Hanson reports that thenew herbicide, Specticle, “worked quite good” inpreventing goose grass infestations.WINTER 2012DuPontAdvion No second chanceNo second call FIRE ANT BAITFire ant colonies are gone in 24 to 72 hours with DuPont Advion fire ant bait. C O V E R S T O RYNo.18 during my visit. I had only seen thatspecies once before down at The Falls CC inWest Palm Beach a few years ago.Hanson accomplishes all this fairly typicalbut-rigorous maintenance program with a totalstaff of nine including himself, his assistant,Some of our best ideas havecome from the crew. I believein supervising by training, notjust criticizing results.Paul Davidson, and turf equipment manager,Karl Marshall. Besides the golf course andclubhouse grounds, the crew must also tendto the common areas on the whole propertyincluding the tennis courts, and croquet andlawn bowling areas. The crew starts at 5 a.m.each day to get the course ready for play, andthen does the perimeter work to minimize anydisruption to the flow of play.Since the crew must perform at such highproductivity, I wanted to know Hanson’s secretto motivation and management. He said, “Ibelieve in participatory management. Someof our best ideas have come from the crew.I believe in supervising by training, not justcriticizing results. The most important aspectis to truly respect each person. You must makethe workplace a pleasant place to live andwork.”Hanson means what he says. When walkingthrough the crew’s break room, this messagewas at the top of the daily assignment board:“It’s all about Attitude!”And speaking of attitude, Hanson is awalking testament to living life with a positiveattitude considering he has had several highlysuccessful careers in one lifetime. When contemplating the title for this coverstory, I was almost tempted to call it, “I LedThree Lives,” after the mid-century TV seriesstarring Effrem Zimbalist, Jr, who played anFBI agent. That thought was based on thecolorful careers of our host superintendent14THE FLORIDA GREEN
