The staff at Landisville Middle School has been working hard this summer to prepare thebuilding for your arrival on August 25th.Landisville Middle School operates on a 6 period schedule. The school day begins at 7:33 AMand ends at 2:40 PM. A draft of your schedule is included in this mailing, however, you willreceive a finalized copy the first day of school. Middle school schedules involve more movementthan elementary schedules and have more information to digest. Understanding the differencebetween year-long, semester-long, quarter-long, and mini-marking-period-long classes can be achallenge. Therefore, on the back of the schedule is a handout on how to read a middle schoolschedule. Additionally, LMS will be hosting student orientation tours on August 16th at 6:00 PMand August 18th at 10:00 AM in the LMS cafeteria. We will assist students in how to read theirschedules at these orientations and during homeroom on the first day of school. There are alsoadditional important sources of information enclosed for the upcoming school year. The lockers at LMS are fitted with combination locks. While lockers remain school property, wewanted to provide a secure place for students to place their educational items and personalbelongings. These locks are traditional dial combination locks and even though they are veryeasy to open, we know this is a new skill for middle school students and one that makes somenervous. We will spend plenty of time on the first day of school assigning lockers and practicinglocking procedures and assist students throughout the first few weeks to become comfortablewith this task.Upon arrival on August 25th, students who wish to eat breakfast and all grade 7 students shouldreport to the cafeteria. Grade 8 students not eating breakfast should report to the gym. Atapproximately 7:25 AM students will be dismissed to go to the homeroom indicated on the topleft corner of their schedule. Even if you throw out your draft schedule, please try and rememberthe homeroom teacher you have been assigned to. This will make the first day smooth.I am excited to begin the school year! The staff and I have a truly wonderful year planned for thestudents and family members of Landisville Middle School. If you have questions at any time, please feel free to email me or call me using the information below.Sincerely,Douglas Dandridge, IIPrincipal717-898-5607The mission of the Hempfield School District community is to provide safe environments and responsive programs that inspire allstudents to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a global society.

Dress Code RemindersAt LMS, we recognize that choice of clothing can be an important avenue for students toexplore and express their sense of identity. However, the primary purpose of the middleschool is to provide all students with the best education possible. When student dressdisrupts or interferes with the teaching or learning process or presents a health/safetyhazard, the issue will be addressed. Just as most businesses establish guidelines forworkplace dress, LMS has guidelines and expectations regarding appropriate school dress.Below is a summary of our dress and grooming code. In the Student Handbook and on theHSD website under School Board Policy #221: Dress and Grooming, you can find a morein-depth description. All shirts/blouses/tops must cover the torso (cleavage should not be visible) and mustalso touch the top of the pants/skirts/shorts when the student is seated or standing.Muscle shirts, low-cut tops, tank tops (including spaghetti straps), halter-tops, meshtops, and tube tops arenot allowed.Pants are to be worn at the waist with no exposure of undergarments. Shorts, skirts,or dresses are to be longer than mid-thigh. Pants, jeans, or shorts with holes abovemid-thigh are not allowed.Violation of the dress code will result in disciplinary action.

LMS School Supply ListWe would like our students to enter school with items that prepare them to start asuccessful school year. We are asking that students have a large three ring binderor several small ones. Dividers for the binders will be helpful. That way a studentcan organize their binder for the different subjects they will have. Other suppliesthat would be useful are:#2 Pencils with EraserPink Soft Rubber EraserNotebook 3 Hole Paper PunchPen, Black InkRulerBox of Colored Pencils, AssortedAssorted Highlighters3x5 Ruled Index CardsPost-It-NotesCalculator – A good scientific calculator for students to have through PreAlgebra is the TI-34 Multiview. If your student plans on taking Algebra I andbeyond, they would do well to purchase the TI-83, TI-84 or the TI-Nspire.It’s best to wait until the math teacher provides your student withinformation on which calculator best suits their needs.   Ear buds/headphones (7th grade) If you need assistance in obtaining some of these items, please contact ourguidance office to see if we can be of help. The guidance office number is898-5631 and the secretary will be available after August 2.

Reading a Middle School ScheduleWe recognize at the Middle School there is a learning curve to reading our schedule. This handout may help you understand the unique vocabulary and format of ourschedule. If you have any questions please reach out to your guidance counselor, who is listed on your schedule, and he/she will be happy to help.Durations (YR, S1, S2, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8) – At themiddle school we have many different abbreviations for our durations. YR – Year-long course (180 days) S1/S2 - meets for 1 semester (90 days) Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 - meets for 1 quarter (45 days) M1-M8 - meets for ½ a quarter or a ‘mini’-marking period (22 days).YRS1S2Q1M1Q2M2M3Q3M4M5Q4M6M7M8Lunches – We have 3 lunches at the middle school. Those 3 lunches wrap around 2of our class periods. The order of these periods is A – 4 – B – 5 - C. Depending onwhich lunch period you eat you could have class 4A, 4B, 5B or 5C. A lunch will have class 4B and 5C. B lunch will have class 4A and 5C. C lunch will have class 4A and 5B.Note: f you have class 4B you will see the same course listed in the block for period4 and period B. This appears to be a double class, or 2 periods of the same class, however in reality it only meets as 1 period during the day.Exploratory Classes – At the middle school we have a rotation of 7 exploratoryclasses. They are Physical Education, Health, Family and Consumer Science, Art,Music, Computer Applications and Technology Education. Those 7 classes rotatethroughout the year. If some of these courses are not listed on your schedule it isonly because the schedule has been printed for the beginning of the year and doesnot show second semester courses. We will distribute new schedules to studentsthroughout the year as needed. If there is any question about when the course isscheduled you can see a full listing of your courses on the parent portal.
