This year the football game is scheduled forFriday, October 18th at the Sportsplex and the dance will be held on Saturday, October 19th at theHeron Bay Marriott. This year’s theme is “Under the Big Top!”By now you should have received your child’s interim report for the first quarter. If you need another copy or would like to schedule a meeting with your child’s teachers, please contact the GuidanceDepartment at 954-340-4134. In addition, please look for your child to bring home his/her reportcard in mid-November. It is important that you play a role in your child’s academics and encouragetheir maximum effort. As a school we value the relationships with our parents that are focused onthe best interest of their child.Should your child need additional assistance in specific classes, please encourage your child to coordinate with their teachers to receive extra help after school. If there is also a need in the core areas of reading, math, or science, our after school tutoring (Panthers Excel Program) has just begun.I hope that you take advantage of this program to compliment your child’s daily academics. If youdid not yet enroll your child and would like him/her to participate, please contact Mrs. Self at 954340-4130.As for open house, I feel that it was an incredible success. The feedback and involvement is what Ilook forward to for the remainder of the school year. I appreciate those who attended the PTSOmeeting that same evening. PROSPECT PROFILE: ALONZO TAYLORSEPTEMBER 13, 2013 BY ERIC WALLACEFLORIDAHOOPS.COMThis time of year it is common for college coaches to be in search of two things, size andpoint guard play. Coral Springs Charter senior Alonzo Taylor is an under the radar leadguard prospect that will likely turn some heads this season.Former Division I coach and current Coral Springs Charter Head Coach Alex Groothius hashigh praise for Taylor who was an honorable mention All-Broward County selection lastseason. “Alonzo is the heart and soul of our team. He’s a great playmaker with a knack forknocking down big shots,” said Groothius. The 5’10 lead guard is starting to pick up interest from Division I programs includingNorthwestern State, Wisconsin-Green Bay and North Florida but Taylor is concentratingon improving his game for the upcoming season.“I am working on getting quicker and improving my on-ball defense.” said the senior guardwho is in such of a program with solid academics and a chance to compete for minutes early in his college career. The Panthers will rely heavily on Taylor and junior guard Austin Vaughn in a very competitive district that includes Pine Crest, University School and North Broward Prep. “He’s awinner. He makes his teammates better and is a coachable lead guard with a high basketball IQ and a great understanding for the game,” added Groothius.OctoberPage 77

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWSThe Coral Springs Charter School’s National Honor Society held itsfirst general meeting on Monday, September 16th and didn't waste any time preparing for an excitingand meaningful year. Mr. Singer and his team of officers had spent the summer planning activitiesfor NHS. The first meeting was the time to share these plans with the general membership. Judgingby the members’ reactions, it looks like this might be the best year ever for CSC NHS.Club President Daren Bailey led the meeting. He reminded members that they are part of a prestigious organization of student leaders who have exceptional grade point averages and are committedto performing community service. He plans on not only upholding this reputation but building on it.Calvin Iu, VP of Tutoring, informed members that tutoring middle school students in math is ourprimary mission. He brought Ms. Sonders and Mr. Leibowitz to the meeting to speak to the membersand explain how vital this service is. NHS is made up of overachievers dedicated to service. Thisschool just happens to have a small population of middle school students who find math very challenging. NHS members, together with the MS math department, help these kids overcome these challenges. Their presentations were quite inspirational. Tutoring began the next day! Members can signup for tutoring outside Mr. Singer's room (128).Su Hninyi, VP of Events, informed the membership that each of them must attend/participate inat least two special events each semester. She has already planned several events for the membersto choose from such as creating holiday cards for wounded veterans and raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's "Pennies for Patients" campaign. This particular event has been a favorite of our chapter. For the last 2 years we have raised more money than any other school our size.VP of Finance, Camila Gonzalez, presented the dues structure. Dues are 45.00, 25.00 is due bythe first meeting in October. The balance is due by the end of the semester. Members may "workoff" the other half of their dues by selling coupon books or healthy granola bars (NHS doesn't sellcandy!)Domenica Vera, our VP of Communications, presented a brand new communication system for members. She had each member text a message to a special on-line service. Now when we have a message for the membership, Domenica can text it in her phone and it will be disseminated to all themembers. We will be using the service to inform members of meeting dates and opportunities to fulfill their service obligations. She also reminded the members to check the bulletin board outside Mr.Singer's room for other communications. Finally, Sarah Dozil, VP of Compliance, informed the members that she will keep all records oftheir tutoring hours, events, dues, grade point average, etc. Members who do not fulfill their obligations or whose grades drop below the NHS threshold, will be given a warning. If the situation doesnot improve they will be removed from the organization. This isn't a pleasant task but we must maintain the integrity of the organization. When asked what his main function is as faculty advisor, Mr. Singer responded: "my job is to makesure CSC NHS continues to live up to the reputation they have earned these past years and that themembers take pride in boasting that they are members of NHS."OctoberPage 99

My name isMrs. Willoughby and I am the school nurse at CSC. Thereare a few things, just as reminders to discuss. At the start of each school year there is a"Code of Conduct" that you and your student had to sign. This outlined the policy for medication in school. Even over the counter drugs are not allowed in school without a special formfrom the county. If your student has to take any medication in school, please make sure thata form is filled out. This does include inhalers. If your student has severe allergies and requires or carries an Epipen, it is very important that we are aware of this in case of an emergency. If you have any questions regarding medications in school please call me. My contactinformation will be at the end of this letter. The required 6th grade screenings with be done this year and are listed on the school calendar. First hearing will be done, then vision and BMI and finally scoliosis. Forms were senthome explaining this and asking if there were any screenings that you DID NOT want done.Hopefully your student sent them back in if you wanted to opt out of any. If you wantedthem done you did not have to send the form back.I am in the office every day between the hours of 9am and 2pm. Please contact me for anyconcerns that you may have (ewilloughby@coralspringscharter.org or 954-340-4107).OctoberPage 1111

CSCS READING CHALLENGE!The research shows “ that the more children read, the bettertheir fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.”* These factorsaffectachievement in all subject areas. With that research in mind,CSCS and its sister schools have initiated a new program called “The Reading Chal-lenge.” The great thing about this program is that students get to choose the booksthey will enjoy. The expectations for the program are that students in middle schoolmust read 50 books during the course of the school year, and high school studentsmust read 30 books. Teachers are also getting with the program, as well, and mustalso read 30 books for the year. After reading, students will be required to fill out a card withthe author, title, and number of pages (A total of 200 pages will count as one book). They will also have a choice among questions to answer about each book. Cards forstudents and teachers will be posted on a display to celebrate their achievements.Mrs. Martin, our library media specialist, will tabulate numbers of pages and makereports of our progress.Students will be given two suggested titles a month to consider, although they are not required. Students should be encouraged to read to their level. The program officially starts October 7th, but everyone is encouraged to start reading now! Any book read since the beginning of the school yearcounts! Students, at their teacher’s discretion, will be given raffle tickets for booksread in order to earn a chance at various prizes throughout the year.
