We’ll provide vitalinformation on lavas, gas columnsand ash plumes – potentiallyprotecting thousands of people.Dogs go digitalDr Clara Mancini set up ourfirst research programme intoanimal-computer interaction.Developing tools to enable dogsto work in medical detection. One tool lets diabetes-alertdogs raise help if their ownersuffers a hypoglycaemic attack.Another allows trained petsto operate lights or doors.Through digital technology, wehope to link these tools to wirelessappliances, alert others that helpis required, and make these evenmore useful in people’s homes.Rosetta: The great spacemission of our timeIt took 10 years for the Rosettaspace mission to reach Comet67P. But after travelling almostfour billion miles, it finally madeit on 6 August 2014.Getting there was the first hurdle. Then it was down to the importantinstrumentation built by the OUto do its work. Like Ptolemy, whichmeasured samples from the cometand found they contained sugarsand amino acids: the buildingblocks of life.I AM.TILLMANN HENSSLERTillmann heard aboutthe OU on TV and wasattracted by itsinternational reputation. He chose to study anMBA with the OUBusiness School.I chose the OU Business Schoolbecause it has a fantastic academicreputation in Germany andbecause of its triple accreditationfrom AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS.The OU is flexible because theyrealise balancing a full-time job, family life and studying, yousometimes need help. Fitting mystudy around the job was achallenge, but it was worthwhile.I got a lot of support from thetutors who you could reach at anytime by email or by phone. You'remuch closer to the tutor than in a‘brick’ university. You can take the study materialsanywhere you want. You can studyat work, at home or on holidays. With the virtual forums you canchat with students and tutors andshare best practise and learnings. The MBA gave me the opportunityto change my career. It provided anexcellent business education and12the chance to learn new concepts, methods and skills, which canimmediately be put into practice atwork. I learned a lot from otherstudents, they were from differentbackgrounds with differentexperiences.I'd compare MBA study with doinga half marathon. You have a visionat the beginning that you want tosucceed after three years to havethe MBA the same way you wantto reach the finish line for your halfmarathon. And on the way, youneed all the energy and willpowerto meet challenges and obstacles. It's the determination and thefeeling afterwards that you'veaccomplished that goal whichkeeps you on track. And whenyou're there, it's just phenomenal. For me the MBA at the OU is one thebest things I have done in my life!Tillmann Henssler,MBA graduate13
