Learn fromthe BestDr Leonid Petrov is a senior lecturer and headof postgraduate studies at ICMS. He graduatedfrom the Department of Oriental Studies, St.Petersburg National University in Russia, wherehe majored in Korean History and Language.Between 1996 and 2002, Dr Petrov workedon his doctoral thesis, “SocioeconomicSchool and the Formation of North KoreanOfficial Historiography”, at the AustralianNational University in Canberra. Dr Petrov’sacademic interests include North and SouthKorea (DPRK and ROK); Traditional, Modernand Contemporary Asian Societies andCultures; USSR, Russia, Commonwealth ofIndependent States, Central Asia, Immigration,Border Control, and Human Rights. He hasbeen teaching Cross-Cultural Management,Strategic Intelligence, International Tourism andother business-related postgraduate coursesat ICMS since 2013.The insight he brings to these subjects, especially the internationally focused andcross-cultural subjects, has been met with greatenthusiasm from his students who appreciateDr Petrov’s experience and expertise. Dr Petrovsays, “Postgraduate students are a pleasure toteach; they have firsthand experience and enjoycontextualising this knowledge in theoreticalframeworks. In undergraduate studies, thediscussion is usually about the learned material, but in postgraduate there is more discussionaround why things happen. There is more finetuning of students’ understanding and delvinginto nuances.” Dr Petrov also enjoys teachingat ICMS because of its strong emphasis oncomprehensive professional experience. As in the case for all ICMS undergraduateprograms, work integrated learning is akey component of postgraduate study. Formasters students, this takes the form of anintensive industry based research project. Allmasters students must complete 600 hoursof work related to their studies and submit arigorous research report. This may be basedon either a real-world problem identified by anICMS industry partner, or an in-depth researchassignment that allows the student to apply theskills or knowledge learnt during postgraduatestudies. An industry experienced ICMS supervisoroversees every student’s placement andproject, guiding them in their development.Master’s graduates then leave ICMS withindustry connections and experience so theyare ready to move directly into managementroles. Work integrated learning is also part of thedevelopment behind each subject. Dr Petrovexplains, “In many other universities there arefrequently gaps between practical applicationand learning. So students study, graduate andthen find themselves unemployed; it can bevery demotivating. At ICMS, however, every subject we teach hasa purpose. We explain why we are studyingthat particular subject; why the student isthere,” he says.“Our graduates are analyticalproblem solvers with a depthof industry knowledge andprofessional industry experience. Our graduates leave ICMSready to succeed as outstandingbusiness leaders.”Dr Leonid PetrovProgram Manager (Postgraduate)

Expert inHer FieldAfter researching experiential learning forover a decade, Associate Professor JoannaCrossman comes to ICMS to implement provenstrategies for improving student outcomes.Associate Professor Crossman joined ICMSas Associate Dean (Postgraduate andInternational) in April 2018, and brings awealth of knowledge to the students andfaculty at the College. Dr. Crossman hasrecently published a newbook in July this year,Teaching Human Resource Management: Anexperiential Approach, published by EdwardElgar and co-edited by Suzanne de Janasz.Experiential learning is loosely defined asdeveloping a student’s ability to apply theoryto practical situations in the workplace.Dr. Crossman’s experience in experientiallearning ties in perfectly with ICMS’ strategy ofpreparing students to launch confidently intotheir chosen career straight after graduation. Each degree has a built-in industry placementcomponent aimed at complementing what astudent learns in the classroom, somethingwhich Dr. Crossman believes is at the heartof ICMS’ success in producing employableand work-ready graduates. “The emphasis onworkplace experience for up to 9 months is aprime example of the commitment that ICMSmakes to the value of industry experience,”Dr. Crossman said. “Experiential learning is apowerful tool and ensures that what and howstudents learn is meaningful and relevant toemployer needs. The strong emphasis at ICMS on workintegrated learning and experiential activitiesprepares our graduates well for employmentand distinguishes them from other candidates– that is well documented every year in ourgraduate employment figures.” Almost 90% ofICMS students graduate with a job in their field, based on an Internal Graduate Survey (2016).Crossman cautions against a superficialapproach to experiential learning. “In my view, referring to experiential learning as ‘learning bydoing’ fails to do justice to experiential learningas a rigorous process that demands deeplearning, critical reflection and a high level ofstudent engagement,” Dr. Crossman said. This ensures lessons are learnt and internalisedfor maximum benefit to both students andfuture employers. “What sets ICMS studentsapart is that the college has a sustainable, and demonstrable prioritization of experientiallearning in ensuring that our graduates arecareer ready. They do this by embeddingit into the curriculum and investing in adedicated team to ensure that it happens.”Dr. Crossman is an excellent addition to theICMS faculty, having been an internationalmanager and educator for 40 years. Shehas worked in Australia, Norway, the UK, theMiddle East and East Malaysia, in both privateand public positions and has authored over55 peer reviewed works, cited in thousandsof other publications, many published in topranking, international journals. Dr Crossman’smain research areas include applied ethics, workplace spirituality, internationalisation inhigher education contexts and interculturality.“The strong emphasis at ICMSon work integrated learning andexperiential activities prepares ourgraduates well for employmentand distinguishes them from othercandidates.”Dr Joanna CrossmanAssociate Professor

“One of the most exciting campaignsI have worked on, and one that I amparticularly proud to have supported,is our most recent major brandcampaign featuring HollywoodA-Lister, Jeff Goldblum.”Vanessa ReinmuthMaster of International BusinessMarketing Coordinator at MenulogWhat is your current role? Outline yourprofessional experience.I am the Marketing Coordinator at Menulog,Australia and New Zealand’s largest onlinefood ordering and delivery platform. In my role,I support the entire marketing function, witha focus on digital and social media, acrossvarious projects and campaigns. Our aim is todrive value and business for more than 9,800restaurant partners across the region and buildour customer database, which is currentlysitting at just under three million people!Much of my role is developing content forvarious channels, to raise awareness ofthe Menulog brand and, ultimately, to drivebusiness for our restaurant partners. As Marketing Coordinator I manage a videocontent series to promote key restaurantpartners, which includes development, production, release and promotion of casestudy videos across our social platforms. I amresponsible for managing the Menulog blog, which aims at driving further traffic to the siteand creating a brand personality for Menulog.A big part of my role is also to closely work withour internal finance team to track and report onour multimillion dollar budget month on month,as well as to report on Facebook performanceto our Head of Digital. I particularly enjoytasks related to search engine marketing. This includes working within Google Adwordsand Google Analytics for daily monitoringand campaign analyses as well as workingclosely with our Head of Digital and our mediaagency to continuously optimise our SEMperformance. What career achievements are youespecially proud of?Working at Menulog provides a hugeopportunity to work on a wide variety ofcampaigns - this is anything from targetedlocal area marketing to driving businessfor communities to large-scale, nationalcampaigns that aim at significantly shiftingmetrics for the Menulog brand. One of the most exciting campaigns I haveworked on, and one that I am particularlyproud to have supported, is our most recentmajor brand campaign featuring HollywoodA-Lister, Jeff Goldblum.Working closely together with our Head ofDigital and our global digital marketing agencyin the UK, I helped develop our social strategythat would roll out over the course of six months.Seeing the creative work we developed liveon Facebook, and the thousands of positivecomments on the campaign, was an incrediblyproud moment for me and one of my greatestcareer achievements to date. This experiencehas also cemented my decision to pursue adigital marketing career, with a focus on socialand SEM strategy. How has your ICMS degree contributedto you achieving your professional goals? My Master of International Business degreewas an incredible starting point for my careerto date - through the professional trainingprogram, I was introduced to the Head ofMarketing at Menulog and was able to securemy first full-time job interview, which led to thestart of my career in digital marketing.I did my industry training at a leading eventmanagement company, Ashton Media, andthey were able to refer me to Menulog whereI was able to use my hands-on experienceto demonstrate my capabilities with somemarketing tools and programs that some ofthe other applicants, with less ‘real-world’experience, did not have access to.My international business degree at ICMShas definitely helped me to achieve my firstprofessional milestones, but there’s still moreto come! What were the major contributing factorsto your decision to study at ICMS?The major contributing factor for my decisionto study at ICMS was the hands-on experiencewe gained in the course of one semester ofthe study programme. In addition to theoreticalknowledge, Australian employers look forcandidates with real-world experience to helpyou transition into the workforce once youhave completed your studies. I think this wouldhave been challenging if I had not been ableto gain any experience as part of my degree.Back then, most other universities only offeredoptional internships for a few weeks up to threemonths, which is not enough to get familiarwith work processes.Another major contributing factor was thatICMS is international, with students from allover the globe. Working and learning withpeople of all nationalities enables you todevelop strong communication skills that youcan use in any diverse office environment. What were your highlights during yourtime at ICMS?Personally, I enjoyed the small class sizeswhich made it a lot easier to get to knoweach other and the professors. Everyonewas on first-name basis and we were all onebig community, always willing to help eachother out. The professors were incrediblyexperienced and professional, with manyyears of work experience in their subjects anda passion for teaching. Another highlight wasthe practical semester at Ashton Media, whichI absolutely loved.
