In the A/V LoungeSATURDAY6:15pm - TRAVELING FOR A LIVING - 1966BBC documentary on THE WATERSONS.10:15am The Other Side of the WaterThis film is about the Watersons’ world. It is about their lives - down to earth, vibrant, receptive, and haunted by all kind of influences from the past: their Irish tinker and farmingancestry, their grandmother’s second-hand shop where a love of tradition grew up amonghorse brasses and sing-songs, the rich historical and trading association of the port of Hull.Above all it is about exciting old music, its source and its meaning today. In this film, theWatersons are played against the broader picture of the folk revival. The Other Side of the Water follows a group of young immigrants who take an ancient musicfrom the hills of Haiti and reinvent it on the streets of Brooklyn. This documentary follows thejourney of DJARARA – the only sustained rara band in America – through a hidden New Yorklandscape of vodou temples, underground economies, violent politics, and ground-shakingmusic. Combining archival footage and vérité narratives, this documentary focuses on thejourney of the poetic visionary Pé Yves. Yves has led a Rara movement in New York for 20years, through an era when the media accusing Haitians of bringing AIDS to America, to timesof civil chaos in Haiti, to police brutality riots in New York – each time re-imagining Rara asa voice for an evolving Diaspora. The documentary tells the story of one man who learns tohold true to a vision; a motley band that comes to speak for a larger community; and a musicthat manages to create a new meaning of home in the Diaspora.SUNDAY10:15am - CALYPSO DREAMS Calypso Dreams is an intimate portrait of some of the true Calypsonians in Trinidad andTobago, in performance and in conversation.
