Postgraduate studypathwaysIn general, postgraduate study falls into two main categories:coursework and research. Programs are generally two to three years full-time (orequivalent part-time). You can expect to do independent research and exploreoriginal ideas under the guidance of a supervisor. To apply, you usually need to have completed anundergraduate degree with honours, or a master’sdegree (with a thesis). ACU offers supervised research at either master’s ordoctoral level. Research programs are ideal for making a newcontribution to an academic field. They can be apathway to research or an academic career, or help youget ahead at work.Honours degrees are also available. These are one-yeardegrees for high-achieving students who have alreadycompleted a bachelor’s degree, and allow you to buildupon your knowledge, develop research skills, and workclosely with an academic expert. You can expect to do classes (including online classes),units and set assessments, similar to an undergraduatedegree. To apply, you usually need to have completed anundergraduate degree first. However, professionalexperience can also be considered. The graduate certificate, graduate diploma andmaster’s degree are connected and can build on eachother. If you’re considering a master’s degree but don’tinitially qualify, you may be accepted into the graduatecertificate or diploma in the same area of study. If you choose to study a master’s degree but yourcircumstances change, you may be able to exit thedegree early with the relevant graduate certificate orgraduate diploma. Coursework programs are ideal for gaining new skillsand getting ahead in your career.Example pathways throughpostgraduate studyWith thesisCourseworkDoctorate(Phd)degree is to produce a research thesis under supervisionfrom experienced academic staff. Some four-yearbachelor’s programs have honours embedded into thethird and fourth years.

Fees andscholarshipsThere are many options to help you manage the cost of study. Tuition feesdepend on the course you enrol in, and there are two placement offer types:a fee-paying place, and a Commonwealth supported place (CSP).FEE-PAYING PLACEA fee-paying place is not subsidisedby the government, so you pay thefull cost of the course. As a domesticfee-paying student, you may beeligible to defer payment of your feesthrough the FEE-HELP governmentloan scheme. Repayment of the loanoccurs through the tax system onceyour income exceeds the minimumthreshold. Your employer may alsoconsider assisting with the cost ofstudy if the course is related to yourcurrent position.studyassist.gov.auCOMMONWEALTHSUPPORTED PLACE (CSP)A small number of postgraduatecourses at ACU offer CSPs, wherethe government pays a proportionof tuition costs.
