VSI DL380 Configuration Guide for VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86IntroductionThe VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 release is the first VSI OpenVMS release that supports baremetal x86 servers. VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 supports the HPE ProLiant DL380 GEN9 andGEN10 server models.The HPE ProLiant DL380 is a highly customizable 2 socket/2U server. The VSI OpenVMSV9.2 for x86 release supports a subset of the full range of options that can be configured in anHPE ProLiant DL380 server. This configuration guide identifies configurations that1) aresupported by VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86, and 2) have been explicitly tested by VSI.If you intend to deploy VSI OpenVMS V9.2 on a server that you currently own, please use thisguide to understand what configuration options are supported.If you intend to buy a new HPE DL380 ProLiant server to run VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86,please use this guide as you work with your hardware vendor to order your configuration.NOTE: this guide is intended to describe what is supported if you intend to run OpenVMS as thenative OS on the bare metal HPE ProLiant DL380 server. If you intend to deploy a hypervisorand run OpenVMS as a guest virtual machine instance, this guide is not for you. VSI DL380 Configuration Guide for VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86Chassis OptionsThe HPE DL380 ProLiant server is available with different chassis options. The maindifference between the various chassis options is the form factor for the internal storagedrive bays. VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 supports the chassis options for Small FormFactor and Large Form Factor drive bays.CPU OptionsThe HPE DL380 ProLiant supports the Intel XEON CPU family. There are a wide rangeof CPU options, with different combinations of base frequency, core count, L3 cachesize, power consumption, and amount of system memory supported per socket.VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 places no restrictions on CPU choice as long as the totalnumber of cores in both sockets does not exceed 64.NOTE: VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 does not support Intel Hyper-ThreadingTechnology.Memory OptionsThe HPE DL380 ProLiant supports HPE DDR4 Smart Memory (RDIMM and LRDIMM)as well as Intel Optane Persistent Memory and HPE NVDIMM memory.VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 supports HPE DDR4 memory, up to 3 TB (this is themaximum memory that VSI has tested).Storage controllers (imbedded and add-in PCIe IO cards) and internal storagedrivesThe HPE ProLiant DL380 GEN9 and the HPE ProLiant DL380 GEN10 offer differentinternal Core IO storage controllers. The Core IO storage controllers operate the storagedrives in the internal drive bays in the DL380 chassis. Each configuration below has beentested in RAID and HBA modes.On the HPE ProLiant DL380 GEN9, VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 supports the followinginternal storage controller: P440ar/2GB FBWC 12Gb 2-ports Int FIO SAS ControllerHPE Part Number 749974-B21On the HPE ProLiant LD380 GEN10, the internal Core IO storage controller choices aredifferent than on GEN9. Thestorage drives are available with a variety of capacity and performance options.VSI OpenVMS V9.2 for x86 supports SFF, LFF, SSD, SAS, and SATA drive options,subject to capacity limitations. If you intend to use the drives as “raw drives” (not part ofa software RAID set), then you must choose drives with capacity of 2TB or less.If you configure the internal storage drives as part of a software RAID set (using the coreIO Smart Array controller, for example), then you may use storage drives larger than2TB, but the maximum LUN size that you can configure under OpenVMS is 2TB.Network controllers (imbedded and add-in PCIe IO cards)The HPE DL380 ProLiant server offers different configuration options for imbeddedLOM. Some models have a built in 4 port NIC. Other models offer the choice of afactory integrated NIC, installed into a special slot on the system board, referred to byHPE as ALOM (Adaptive LOM) or FlexibleLOM.
