This SLP Majors Handbook is intended to inform you of the requirements for your professionalpreparation as you pursue this major at the University of Central Oklahoma. Some principalrequirements of this major include the following: The Masters degree program may follow a traditional undergraduate degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology or a degree in another area. However, the entire program of studymust satisfy academic and practicum requirements of the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association. The UCO SLP Masters degree program is intended to prepare the student to meetOklahoma licensure and certification requirements by the Oklahoma Board of Examinersfor Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and teacher certification by theOklahoma State Department of Education. Admission into the program does notguarantee that students will obtain a license or certificate. Licensure and certificationrequirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with UCO.Additionally, licensure and certification requirements can change at any time and vary bystate. This major will require meeting minimum criteria to advance to successive levels: fromFall to Spring Junior level courses, permission for Clinical Practicum/Senior LevelCourses, and admission to the Graduate Program. However, admission to successivelevels is typically competitive in nature as there are frequently fewer slots available thanapplicants.Academic coursework in your major will ultimately require approximately 88-92 credithours of coursework that is applicable to certification and licensure requirements. Manyof these may be completed at the undergraduate level in both General Education and theSpeech-Language Pathology bachelor degree program or as "background prerequisitecourses" for students converting with bachelor degrees in majors other than SpeechLanguage Pathology (Non-SLP background students).Individuals who have completed an undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology major atUCO should plan on six (6) semesters of graduate course work to complete their Mastersdegree requirements. Individuals converting from Non-SLP backgrounds should plan oneight (8) semesters, including two (2) semesters of "background prerequisite" courses andsix (six) semesters in the graduate program to complete their Masters degree.Practicum training requires the completion of a minimum of 400 supervised clock hoursof experience with children and adults in a variety of settings. This will require aminimum of 5 semesters of enrollment in Clinical Practicum at the graduate level.Individuals with a non-teaching bachelor degree must complete PTE Foundations ofAmerican Education (with a field experience requiring 15 hours of observation) for futureemployment in the Public Schools. Such students may be advised to take PTEDevelopmental Psychology.5Revised 4/2022

Undergraduate AdvisementAs you pursue your undergraduate major at UCO, the Advisement Center is primarilyresponsible for advising you. However, you are encouraged to consult with the Speech-LanguagePathology Program Director should you have any questions regarding the coursework in thismajor. The undergraduate degree is comprised of four major components: 1) General Education,2) Professional Teacher Education, 3) Related Electives, and 4) Speech-Language PathologyMajor Coursework. The coursework pertaining to the General Education component is listed inthe undergraduate catalog. The courses and their recommended sequence for the remaining threecomponents are provided in this Handbook.University Core CoursesYour University Core (or "lower division") component is designed to provide a broad foundationof information, knowledge, and skills relating to our social, scientific and cultural inheritanceand to serve as a basis for the successful pursuit of advanced and professional studies. For ASHACertification after achieving the Masters degree you will need to have two English courses(typically ENG 1113 and ENG 1213), 2 courses in Behavioral/Social, a Biology course (must behuman or animal biology, can be General Biology), a Physics or Chemistry, and a 2000 levelStatistics course. These are typically included in your University Core courses.Basic/Core Prerequisite Course Content Areas required for ASHA CCC: Biology Physics or Chemistry Behavioral/Social Science Statistics English (2 courses at any level that demonstrate competency in written English)Please follow the link above to reference the ASHA description of acceptable course content.Professional Teacher EducationThis component of the undergraduate program introduces the foundations and principles ofAmerican education. It is strongly recommended that undergraduate students completeFoundations of American Education during the sophomore year. It would be desirable to takePTE Developmental Psychology during the sophomore year as well; otherwise, it should betaken during the first semester of the junior year. Students should note that Foundations ofAmerican Education will require a 15-hour field experience and Contemporary LearningSciences will require a 27-hour field experience. While enrolled in the Language Disorderscourse you will be required to complete 25 hours of Pre-practicum Clinical Observations. This25-hour requirement is provided as 15 to 25 hours of live observation in the UCO Scott F.McLaughlin Speech & Hearing Clinic and 15 to 25 hours of scheduled classroom videoobservations. Taking either Foundations of American Education or Educational Psychology inthe same term as Language Disorders would result in completing 45 to 52 hours of observationin the term; students should keep this in mind and plan their enrollments accordingly.6Revised 4/2022

Undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology majors are required to complete and retain allartifacts/rubrics associated with PTE, SPED, and SLP courses. The SLP artifacts and rubrics (5items and their rubrics) will ultimately be included in your SLP BCC binder/CALIPSO as youprogress through the undergraduate and graduate SLP programs. Additional instructions will beprovided in courses where applicable assignments occur. Non-traditional graduate applicants –those with non-SLP bachelor degrees completing prerequisite courses – will complete theartifacts and rubrics for those prerequisite/leveling courses they complete at UCO prior toadmission to the Graduate program.Related ElectivesThis component allows traditional undergraduate bachelor degree students in SLP to be exposedto a broader range of background information pertaining to the various concepts, such asacoustics, linguistics, early childhood, etc. Other related courses will broaden their understandingof life span development in humans. Still other related courses will provide informationregarding various special populations, such as individuals with intellectual disabilities, emotionaland behavioral issues, and those from culturally diverse backgrounds. The list of Related Electives on the Bachelor degree plan included in this Handbook is a partiallisting of all the courses that can be applied to Related Electives. A more complete listing may beincluded in this Handbook or is available from the undergraduate advisor in the AdvisementCenter or the SLP Academic Advisor. Any courses not listed that the student believes may relatein some way to this major can be considered for acceptance as a Related Elective by submitting acourse description to the SLP Academic Advisor. Additional information such as course syllabior course notes may be needed to determine whether a course is applicable.SLP Major CourseworkPlease note that the SLP major coursework occurs in a "fixed" sequence as outlined on theundergraduate course sequence sheet included in this Handbook. Once a student has enrolled inthe initial set of beginning/prerequisite courses, each course then serves as a prerequisite to asubsequent course. With the exception of Foundations of Speech-Language Pathology, SLPcourses are scheduled only once per academic year. If there is a schedule conflict between amajor course and another course, in most cases the student should give the major SLP coursepriority; the non-major course may be offered in multiple semesters where the SLP course willbe offered only annually. Students are, of course, encouraged to consult with the undergraduateprogram advisor in the Advisement Center or the SLP Academic Advisor when they areuncertain about the course schedule. No permission is required for Foundations of SLP, however,a minimum GPA of 2.75 is recommended for permission to enroll in the first set ofmajor/prerequisite courses (Normal Language Development, Acoustic Phonetics, Speech &Hearing Mechanism) and required for the second set of major/prerequisite courses (LanguageDisorders, Speech Sound Disorders, Audiology, & Neuroscience in SLP). The program willadmit students into Spring SLP required courses based on their GPAs and maintain a waiting listfor students whose GPAs do not meet this requirement and admit them on a space available basisas changes occur.7Revised 4/2022

Admission Requirements and Criteria in Speech-Language PathologyPermission to Enroll in Speech-Language Pathology Beginning/Prerequisite CourseworkStudents who plan to begin the Speech-Language Pathology course sequence as undergraduatesor those who have previously earned a bachelor degree in another major are able to enroll in thebeginning Fall sequence of SLP courses. During the Fall term all SLP students who wish to takethe corresponding Spring SLP courses must request permission to enroll in the Spring courses. The Fall courses are prerequisites to the Spring prerequisite courses. The Foundations of SpeechLanguage Pathology course is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters and does not requirepermission to enroll. It should be taken prior to or concurrent with the remaining juniorlevel/prerequisite courses as listed below. Any Full Semestero SLP 4003 Foundations of SLPo SLP 4910/4xx2 Neuroscience in SLP Fall Semester onlyo SLP 4724 Speech and Hearing Mechanismo SLP 4014 Normal Language Developmento SLP 4143 Acoustic Phonetics Spring Semester onlyo SLP 4223 Audiologyo SLP 4054 Language Disorderso SLP 4673 Articulation DisordersRequired Form and Transcripts: Students must submit a Request for Permission to Enroll in SLPSequence Courses form along with current transcripts showing all completed coursework. Formswith transcripts should be submitted to the Program Coordinator for the Spring Junior levelcourses beginning Nov. 1st and ending in January the week before Spring classes begin. Theform is available through the link on the SLP Webpage, in the SLP program hallway, and fromthe SLP undergraduate enrollment advisor in the Enrollment Center in the Nigh UniversityCenter.Required Minimum GPA: Permission to enroll is based on a minimum 2.75 GPA overall or inthe last 30 hours to gain entrance to the Spring, Junior level major/prerequisite courses.Permissions are prioritized based on GPA; that is, those with higher GPAs are givenpermission earlier. The higher of the student’s total GPA or last 30 hours GPA will be used.During November - December, those students with a 3.50 GPA will be given permission; otherstudents will be maintained on a waiting list. The criterion is lowered to 3.25, then 3.15, andfinally 3.0 in January until the classes are filled. Because the SLP beginning sequence coursesfrequently fill up, students should not wait for permission to enroll in the SLP courses to enroll inother courses that they need. It is wise to take a "worst case scenario" approach to be sure ofgetting enrolled in other courses that will help the student in making overall progress in theiracademic program.Required English Proficiency: Although the UCO Speech-Language Pathology program and theUniversity welcome and value diversity, the program and its clinic operate in a predominately14Revised 4/2022

Applicants who are not native speakers of English must meet theminimum university and graduate college requirements as indicated in current universitycatalogs for proficiency in English. In addition, an oral interview with the program coordinator isrequired for initial permission. Students w
