Time for the 50th KL&L Convention! The 50th Annual Key Lock & Lantern Convention is onlyone month away, and it is shaping up to be one of our bestevents yet. Our Friday train ride will once again featurehistoric rolling stock provided by the Delaware-LackawannaRailroad, for a chartered trip over the railroad’s CarbondaleLine. The trip will not only cover all of the line’s formerDelaware & Hudson Penn Division trackage, but will alsoinclude a photo stop and tour of the company’s recentlyopened Von Storch Locomotive Shop.Table reservations for the show on Saturday have outpacedthe amount needed for last year, and our floorplan wizardJohn Brainard has added an extra row to accommodate theadditional requests. We have exhibitors lined up who focuson lanterns, builders plates, timetables, and everything inbetween. Dr. Robert Powell and Walt Kierzkowski will beback again for the evening programs, along with the returnof “open projector night” for KL&L members to presentmaterial. Many of our members are on a relentless quest for artifactsthat are missing from their collections, and there will beplenty of scarce memorabilia to dig through. I alwaysmanage to find something, even though my primary interestin attending is to visit with fellow collectors. From the firstKL&L meeting that I attended, not a convention has gone bywhere I didn’t learn something or make some new friends. That is what makes the KL&L Convention such a great event– there is plenty of time in the schedule to enjoy a leisurelyget-together and also to make some deals. In recent years, we have had more timetable & papercollectors in attendance, along with collectors of nonrailroad lanterns and locks. The KL&L Convention startedas a “railroad hardware only” meet, but over the last tenyears we have made an effort to expand the event to includeall categories of memorabilia from railroads, transportation, and industry. I would like to invite more collectors of thesetypes of antiques to attend – having even a few more exhibitswill lead to them becoming a bigger part of future shows. This is the 50th year that Key Lock & Lantern has heldan event for historians and collectors of transportationmemorabilia. In recent years, we’ve made a few changes, suchas opening the show to non-members, expanding the contentof exhibits, and adding activities such as train rides. Althoughthe convention has grown in recent years, we’ve managed tokeep that small show atmosphere.I’ve been attending the convention for about twenty yearsnow, and I always look forward to it. If you haven’t beento one yet, there is no time like the present to get onboard! There is still time to register for most events (although someoptions are sold out, so please use online registration for thecurrent status), and a few hotel rooms are still available. As always, thanks for everyone’s ongoing support of KeyLock & Lantern, and I hope to see you at our 50th conventionin Carbondale.Dave HamiltonKL&L President & EditorRailroad Event CalendarUpcoming historical society conventions, specialevents, railroadiana shows & auctions. The Transportation History Exposition isthe “main event” of the Key Lock & Lantern Convention, providing members with a venue to showcase interestingartifacts from their collections and the results of theirresearch. Over fifty tables have already been reserved in the6000 square foot facility, and this year’s event promises tobe one of the largest ever.KL&L members competing for the “Best in Show” awardhave presented a variety of exhibits in recent years, withtopics ranging from lantern manufacturers to local railroadhistory. Some of the displays at last year’s show included:the Nail City Lantern Company, Delaware Lackawanna &Western Railroad memorabilia, early Amtrak timetables, passes from New York & Pennsylvania railroads of the 18501890 period, railroad uniform badges, and an original CTCmachine panel from the New York Central Railroad. TheErie Railroad, the Northern Central Railroad, the Delaware& Hudson Canal Company, the Chicago & Alton Railroad,Taylor Manufacturing Company, street & post lamps, railroad police badges, and lantern patent models have beenfeatured in recent years. In addition to the displays, most exhibitors also offerauthentic memorabilia for sale or trade. Severalexhibitors are experts at lantern restoration, and are alwayshappy to give advice, or to offer their repair services. Lockand key collectors will find plenty of scarce examples fortheir collections, and can exchange “want lists” with otherswho are looking for similar artifacts.A growing number of timetable and paper collectorshave been participating in the show in recent years, withseveral members of the National Association of TimetableCollectors scheduled to exhibit this year. From rare 19thcentury employee timetables to modern public timetablesin the “dollar bin,” there is something available to fit everyephemera collector’s budget. KL&L Transportation History ExpoContinued from Page 11Several historical societies are also expected to have tablesat the show, offering books and memorabilia for sale, andproviding information about their group’s activities. TheOntario & Western Railway Historical Society, Bridge LineHistorical Society, Carbondale Historical Society, and PennCentral Railroad Historical society will all be representedat this year’s convention. The KL&L Convention is anexcellent event for networking with fellow historians, andmembers of these groups are looking forward to meetingcollectors with similar interests. The annual Key Lock & Lantern fundraiser sale willtake place in the afternoon, with several tables of donatedmemorabilia sold to the highest bidder. All proceeds fromthis event are used to keep registration fees at a reasonablelevel, with the convention operating on a break-even basisevery year as a result. There is always some interesting(and sometimes scarce) memorabilia to buy, and it is a greatopportunity to pass along something that is no longer neededin a collection, while supporting a good cause.Advance registration for the Key Lock & LanternConvention, which includes admission to the TransportationHistory Exposition, is still open on the KL&L website atwww.klnl.org. The registration fee is only 5 per personfor members, and 10 per person for non-members, withan early admission pass available for an additional 15 fee.The early admission pass allows for entry to the exhibit hallduring setup hours of 7:30am to 9:00am, giving a head starton seeing the displays and making deals with exhibitors.Regular show hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm, with “at thedoor” registration available for walk-ins at 10 per person. For updates about convention events, follow the Key Lock& Lantern page on Facebook.KL&L News - Page 12

KL&L Excursion Train to Travel OverDelaware & Hudson Penn DivisionKey Lock & Lantern Convention attendees will have anopportunity to take a ride over the remaining trackage ofthe Delaware & Hudson Railroad Pennsylvania Division inthis year’s Friday activity. This line was constructed in the1860’s, originally serving as a connection to the D&H CanalCompany’s gravity railroad from Honesdale. The route waslater expanded, and became the spine of an all-rail routethat included the Jefferson Railroad from Lanesboro (andits connection to the D&H at Nineveh) and an extension toWilkes-Barre.In the early 1980’s, the Delaware & Hudson shifted its trainsto the former DL&W mainline between Binghamton andScranton, and most of the Penn Division was abandoned. Thesegment of the line between Carbondale and Scranton wasacquired by Lackawanna County Railroad Authority (nowthe Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority), inorder to preserve service to local shippers. It is now operatedby Genesee Valley Transportation’s Delaware-LackawannaRailroad. The chartered KL&L excursion train will traversethis original portion of the D&H Canal Company’s “ValleyRoad.”The Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad is once again providingits inspection train, which consists of an Erie-LackawannaComet commuter coach, a DL&W caboose, and EL businesscar #2.
