Washington High SchoolINTRODUCTIONTeaching good citizenship is a primary goal of ourschool. All students of Washington High Schoolshould respect others' property and rights, practicehonesty, and show respect to teachers andadministrators.attendance hearing. The appeals process does notguarantee that credit will be awarded for gradesaccomplished. The attendance appeals committeewill grant or deny credit for grades earned forindividual class periods. See Attendance andAbsences in the CISD Student Handbook forcompulsory attendance laws.The academic benefits and privileges received bystudents attending Washington High School aredependent upon the good behavior of each student.Behavior that threatens the welfare and morale ofthe school will be referred to the assistant principal.ARRIVING LATE / LEAVING EARLYStudents who arrive at school after 7:45 A.M. mustsign in with the receptionist at the front desk.STUDENTS WHO LEAVE CAMPUS DURING THE DAYMUST DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: With a parent, sign out with the receptionist atthe front desk. Without a parent, sign out in the appropriateprincipal's office before reporting to and signingout with the receptionist at the front desk. With a permission note from the clinic, sign outwith the receptionist at the front desk.The only absences that will not count against astudents are school sponsored events, appointmentsto get driver’s license, or if a student has left schooland returned from a doctor's appointment with theabsence code HCP assigned.All staff members have the authority and theresponsibility to correct inappropriate behaviorwhen necessary. Every effort will be made to helpthe student in overcoming his/her problem.The school tries to involve the student in somedecisions regarding discipline. The followingprocedures may be used separately or collectively tomodify student behavior in correction of problems.ATTENDANCEAttendance is one of the most important factors indetermining if a student will do well in school,graduate and be prepared for success in theirpostsecondary education and career.BUS RIDER EXPECTATIONSStudents will be required to follow all instructionsgiven by the bus driver. Students will be required tosit in their seat assigned by the bus driver or thetransportation department. Students will load theirbus immediately after they are dismissed from classin a timely manner. The school bus is an extension ofthe campus and all code of conduct behavior anddress code expectations will be followed while onthe school bus. Washington bus riders are forbiddento accept or hold any items (bags, cell phones, etc.)belonging to students assigned to DAEP. Failure tofollow these expectations will result in disciplinaryaction and may result in suspension from busridership privileges.Exceeding nine (9) absences in a class per semestermay result in credit being denied. The principal willschedule a conference with the parent/guardianwhen a student misses more than 10% in any oneclass. A student who attends at least 75%, but fewerthan 90%, of the days the class is offered mayreceive credit for the class if he/she completes aplan, approved by the principal, which allows thestudent to fulfill the requirements for the class.If a student attends less than 75% of the days a classis offered and has not completed the plan approvedby the principal, the student will be referred to theattendance review committee to determine whetherthere are extenuating circumstances for theabsences.Both the student and the parent/guardian areexpected to be present for the committee hearing. Itis recommended that parents submit any medical orlegal documentation to the assistant principal'soffice at least two school days prior to theWashington High School52021-2022

Washington High SchoolCAFETERIA REGULATIONS Enter the cafeteria in an orderly manner andform orderly service lines; no cutting in line. Room 503 no later than five minutes after the tardybell rings for their assigned lunch period. Studentsare allowed to bring their lunch from home, or theycan sign up for a lunch from the cafeteria when thereferral is processed.Students must remove trays, paper, cups,glasses, etc. from the table and put them in theproper disposal container after lunch. Violationof this rule may result in disciplinary action. Shouting or “horseplay” of any type will not beallowed, and subject to disciplinary action. Students are allowed to move around inside oraround the outside perimeter of the cafeteria. Students desiring to get outside for fresh air arealso allowed to walk the track as long as theykeep moving around the track. Administration reserves the right to require youto stay seated in an assigned seat or an assignedarea if deemed necessary.Rules for Lunch Detention (LD) Students will eat their lunch first. Students are expected to do schoolwork duringthe entire assigned session. All needed material(books, paper, pencil, etc.) should be brought todetention. Students will not be permitted to leave theclassroom once the detention session hasstarted. Personal matters should be handledprior to arriving to the detention room. Students will not be allowed to leave early. There will be no whispering, talking, passingnotes, or any attempt to communicate withother students. There will be no sleeping. There will be no use of electronic devices (Ex.cell phones, Bluetooth headphones). The school dress code will be enforced. The teacher will dismiss the student when thebell rings.CAMPUS DISTRIBUTIONS AND POSTINGSStudents will not be allowed to distribute anymaterial, written or otherwise, without the approvalof the Principal. The Principal (or designee) mayestablish limits for posted materials. Materialsposted outside the designated areas will be removedand discarded.In-School-Suspension (ISS)ISS is provided as a disciplinary action for repeatedoffenses or offenses of a serious nature. ISS at WHSis located in Room 503. ISS hours are the same asthe regular school hours. In this supervised class, thestudent studies regular school work, receivesassistance from the teacher, and takes all requiredtests. All school rules and regulations, includingdress code, will be in effect for students during theISS assignment. ISS assignments are made for entireschool days. A student who fails to complete a fullday in ISS, who is absent on the assigned day, wholeaves without permission, who is asked to leave forany reason, or who fails to work diligently onclassroom assignments, is subject to furtherdisciplinary action. For example, leaving ISS for aphysician’s appointment will result in the studentreturning to ISS to complete their assigned time.Additional rules and regulations will be in effect forstudents assigned to ISS to create a more structuredenvironment. ISS rules will be discussed with allstudents at the time they are assigned to ISS.DELIVERIES TO CAMPUSStudents who have left things at home such as lunch,homework, projects, etc., should stop by the frontoffice and see if these items have been delivered. Noitems of this nature will be delivered to the studentin the classroom. Deliveries from florists and otherbusiness will not be delivered to the student. Balloonbouquets and floral arrangements are not allowed inthe halls or classrooms. The school will not acceptdeliveries from restaurants or delivery companiessuch as DoorDash or Grubhub. School lunches mustbe delivered by a parent or family member.DISCIPLINELunch Detention (LD)Students may be assigned Lunch Detention forvarious discipline violations. On the day of theirLunch Detention assignment, students will report toWashington High School62021-2022

Washington High SchoolRules for In School Suspension (ISS) Students assigned to ISS will report to the ISSroom at 7:45 am and will be released at 2:00pm. Students are expected to do schoolwork duringthe entire assigned session. All needed material(books, paper, pencil, etc.) should be brought todetention. Students will be permitted limited restroombreaks but cannot leave the classroom for anyother reason. Students will not be allowed to leave early. There will be no whispering, talking, passingnotes, or any attempt to communicate withother students. There will be no sleeping. There will be no use of electronic devices (Ex.cell phones, Bluetooth headphones). The school dress code will be enforced. The teacher will dismiss the student when thebell rings at the end of the day.DRESS CODEAll students are required to dress in a modest andnon-disruptive manner. The student’s dress 1.2.CLOTHING Clothing that could conceal any form of weaponfrom a visual inspection is prohibited, i.e.,trench coats, oversized clothing, baggy pants,wide-legged pants. All clothing must be neat, modest, and inproportion to body size. All shirts or blouses must be closed in front andlong enough to tuck into pants, shorts, or skirts.Halter tops, tank tops (such as basketball typejerseys with large armholes, muscle shirts), tubetops, see-through attire, backless tops, off theshoulder blouses/dresses and tops withspaghetti straps are prohibited. Cleavage maynot be shown. The waistband of pants or shorts must be wornat or above the waist and fastenedappropriately with no more than two fingersextra width at the waist. Skirts and shorts may be worn provided they arethe appropriate size and extend to fingertiplength when arms are extended at the side.Shirts may not be longer than the shorts. Boxer,biking, or spandex shorts are not allowed. Also,this type of apparel is not allowed over otherclothing. Any garment worn over tights/leggings/yogapants must be fingertip length when arms areextended at the sides. Clothing with safety pins or holes/tears higherthan fingertip length must be covered. No holesthat show skin above fingertip length areallowed. Students may not wear boxers or any otherpajama-style clothing. Any clothing with shoulder straps must be wornwith the shoulder straps fastened over theshoulders. Undergarments may NOT be visible. Proper footwear must be worn at all times forhealth and safety reasons. Students are notallowed to wear house shoes, beach sandals,roller shoes, cleated shoes, etc. to school.Out of School Suspension (OSS)The principal or assistant principal may suspend astudent who engages in any misconduct subject tosuspension as identified in the Student Code ofConduct or WHS parent / student handbook. Thestudent who has been suspended may not attendschool or any school related functions during thistime. Additionally, any work missed during thesuspension must be made up in accordance withcampus and/or classroom rules.Short-Term DAEPShort-term DAEP is a 5, 10, or 15-day placementlocated at 507 Martin Luther King Place North inConroe. It is the consequence for serious orpersistent misbehavior identified in the StudentCode of Conduct and/or the CCHS DisciplinaryManagement Plan.Disciplinary AppealsDisciplinary decisions made by the Assistant Principalmay be appealed to the Principal within five schooldays of the Assistant Principal's decision. Decisionsmade by the Principal are final. Exceptions are casesof expulsion, which may be appealed to thesuperintendent or his designee.Washington High SchoolShall not disrupt, interfere with, disturb, ordistract from the learning environment orschool activities.Shall not create a health or other hazard to thestudent’s safety or to the safety of others.72021-2022

Washington High School Head-gear [hats, caps, headbands (worn acrossthe forehead), and bandanas] are not allowedand should not be brought into the building.Any headgear worn in the building may beconfiscated and given to the appropriateassistant principal. Headgear may not bereturned until the end of the semester.Costumes are prohibited except on approvedtheme days.The administration reserves the right to evaluateany current fashion or fad and determinewhether it is appropriate for school wear.ACCESSORIES Body piercing deemed inappropriate bySPECIAL OCCASION DRESS CODEadministration is prohibited. Minimal bodypiercing (up to 2 facial piercings ONLY,excluding ear piercings) are acceptable. Appropriate dress for Prom will include thefollowing guidelines: Spikes, chains, and oversized loops are notallowed. Covering with a band-aid is notpermitted. Students will be required to removeany jewelry that is not deemed acceptable byschool administration.Wallet chains, long key chains, or any otherkinds of chains, including dog collars, are notallowed.Hair must be neat, clean and worn in such amanner that it will not cause distraction.Tattoos/body writing/body art deemedinappropriate by administration must becovered at all times. Coverage/bandage must beapplied before arriving on campus.Sunglasses are not to be worn in the buildingunless they are medically prescribed and theproper documentation is on file with the schoolnurse.Court-ordered monitoring devices must beconcealed.No student may wear an article of clothingdisplaying prohibited substances, obscenities,suggestive pictures/comments, or acts ofviolence.The advertising of the product does not have tomention the name of the substance to beconsidered prohibitive for wear on campus. Ifthe item in question contains a logo, emblem,mascot, name, or any other symbol or word thatis used by the manufacturer to represent theirproduct then it may not be worn or displayed oncampus.No student may wear gang related apparel.Washington High SchoolNo student may wear badges, patches, decals,or emblems of any kind or in any place that maybe disruptive to the learning environment,offensive to others, advocates the use ofprohibited substances, or encouragesunacceptable actions. Spaghetti straps and strapless dresses are okay.Two-piece dresses must overlap.Mesh or see-through inserts in the midriff willnot be allowed.Camisole backs (lace-up) are okay. Single-stringties are not allowed.Front and back of the dress must not be toolow-cut or revealing. The back of the dress orthe waist of a skirt should not go below thenatural waist. Your natural waist is within one(1) inch of your navel.Short dresses must follow dress codemeasurement. This includes slits on longdresses.Appropriate undergarments must be worn.Proper and formal grooming is expected.If you are not dressed appropriately, you may not beallowed to participate in the special occasion.Remember, if in doubt, don’t wear it!ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICYWashington High School is not responsible for theft,damage, or loss of personal electronic devices. Thestudent assumes all responsibility for any electronicdevices brought to school.Between 7:50 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. electronic devices(Ex. Cell Phones/Ear buds/Headphones) may not beused in the building or during passing periodswithout express approval of the classroom teacher.The devices should be stored away, out of site.These devices may be used in the cafeteria areabefore school, during the lunch period, and afterschool.82021-2022

Washington High SchoolUse of electronic devices should not impair astudent’s ability to hear and comply with verbaldirection.Failure to comply with this policy will result indisciplinary action. Electronic Devices/Cell Phones/Earbuds/Headphones must be turned off and out ofsight during passing periods. The use of the device is to be for personal useand not audible by others. Unless approved by the teacher, electronicdevices/cell phones must be turned off and outof sight during class time. Unapproved/inappropriate use of these devicesduring instructional time will result inconfiscation of the device and disciplinaryconsequences will be assigned. Repeat offenses will result in graduateddisciplinary consequences and a parent will berequired to obtain the confiscated electronicdevice from the Assistant Principal. Use of cell phones for pictures or videorecordings of other students or staff membersduring school hours is prohibited. Pictures/video recording in restrooms or lockerrooms is explicitly prohibited and may result insignificant discipline consequences includingcriminal charges.GRADING POLICYWashington uses a 4-point GPA scale with 4.0 A,3.0 B, 2.0 C, etc. Students transferring in will beranked according to the 4.0 scale.Grade Range90-10080-8975-7970-74Below 70Grade Point4.03.02.01.00Summa Cum Laude: Students who earn rank in the top 5% of theirclass according to GPA.In order for a student to be considered for SummaCum Laude honors, he or she must have completedthe final 3 semesters at the awarding schoolbeginning in January of the year prior to graduation.Seniors not meeting this requirement may still earnMagna Cum Laude or Cum Laude honors. Thestudents class rank will not change, only the level ofhonors earned.Magna Cum Laude: Students who rank between the top 5% and 10%of their graduating class according to GPA.Cum Laude: Students who rank between 10% and 15% oftheir class according to GPA.EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT ANDINFORMATIONIf a student has a medical emergency at school or aschool-related activity and the parent cannot bereached, the school will need to have writtenparental consent to obtain emergency medicaltreatment and will need information about allergiesto medications, etc. Therefore, parents are askedeach year to complete an emergency care consentform. Parents should keep emergency careinformation up-to-date (name of doctor, emergencyphone numbers, allergies, etc.) Please contact theschool nurse to update any information.Washington High SchoolLetter GradeABCDFValedictorians: The Valedictorian and Salutatorian must beselected from the Summa Cum Laude graduates. In the event two or more students have thesame grade point average, the awards will bedetermined by calculating numerical averages.INFLAMMATORY LANGUAGE OR BEHAVIORUse of inappropriate language such as profanity,vulgarity, ethnic or racial slurs and/ or any otherinflammatory language either spoken or written thatcould cause a disruption to the learning environmentwill not be allowed. Students may face disciplineconsequences for failure to follow this policy.Actions or language that occur off campus but could92021-2022

Washington High Schoolsignificantly disrupt the learning environment duringthe school day may be referred to the appropriateadministrator for consequences.WEAPONSFireworks, stun guns, firearms, knives, and/ or anyprojectile device or weapon item found on a studentor in a vehicle will be taken up. These items may bereturned only to the parents or guardian of thestudent. Weapons of any kind will not be toleratedon school grounds and will result in disciplinaryaction.Confiscated items will be kept until the end of thatschool year. Information regarding the return ofthese items may be obtained from the assistantprincipal's office during the week followinggraduation. Contraband items will not be returned.LATE ARRIVAL/ EARLY RELEASELate arrival and or early release is a privilege. Latearrival students must be on campus by the start of2nd period (8:35 A.M.). If a student has early release,they are expected to leave campus when their earlyrelease time begins. Failure to comply may result inloss of late arrival or early release periods.LEAVING SCHOOLOnce a student arrives on campus, he/she may notleave without permission from school personnel.Leaving campus without permission from the schoolduring any part of the school day is truancy.Students will receive discipline for truancy.PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTIONTangible courtship: students should conductthemselves in a dignified manner at all times whileat school. To preserve this dignity, it is considered aviolation to engage in inappropriate personal displayof affection. Inappropriate personal display ofaffection may result in disciplinary action.POSSESSION OR USE OF PROHIBITED ITEMSAlcohol/Drugs/Tobacco/Vapes or other IllegalSubstances or Paraphernalia:Cars may be searched for tobacco, alcohol, drugs orother prohibited items in accordance with BoardPolicy FNF. Non-prescription drugs, prescriptiondrugs or natural herbal products or any type ofstimulants are specifically prohibited from campus.Students possessing or using such drugs will receivedisciplinary action. Any student in possession ofand/or use of any substance identified by lawenforcement agencies as a substance that is or hasbeen used as a drug to illicit a behavioral changemay result in disciplinary action.Possession and/or use of any drug paraphernalia asidentified by law enforcement agencies may result indisciplinary action.CATCH & RELEASE POLICYPublic displays of affection (PDA) are not allowedwhile on campus. Students are required to followthe "Catch & Release" Policy which allows studentsto hold hands and/or exchange a quick hug. All socialdistancing guidelines mandated by the State of Texasor the T.E.A. will supersede this "Catch & Release"Policy and must be followed by all students.SAFETYAccident PreventionStudent safety on campus and at school-relatedevents is a high priority of the district. Although thedistrict has implemented safety procedures, thecooperation of students is essential to ensure schoolsafety. A student should: Avoid conduct that is likely to put the student orother students at risk. Follow the behavioral standards in thishandbook and the Student Code of Conduct, aswell as any additional rules for behavior andsafety set by the principal, teachers, or busdrivers. Remain alert to and promptly report to ateacher or the administration safety hazards,such as intruders on campus and threats madeELECTRONIC SMOKING DEVICESE-Cigarettes and other electronic smoking devicesare prohibited at Washington High School.Possession and/or use of such devices by studentson school property may result in disciplinary action.Washington High School102021-2022

Washington High School by any person toward a student or a staffmember.Know emergency evacuation routes and signals.Follow immediately the instruction of teachers,administration, bus drivers, and other districtemployees who are overseeing the welfare ofstudents.2.STUDENT CONFERENCEIf a student receives a written referral from a facultymember, he/she will discuss the problem with theassistant principal. The student is responsible forhis/her own behavior. The assistant principal willhelp identify the problem and establish steps to helpthe student correct the problem. The parent will becontacted regarding the problem and correctiveactions.3.4.TECHNOLOGY USAGE POLICYWith the increased amount of technology availableto Washington students, it is necessary to ensurethat all equipment is maintained at peakperformance level so that all students may benefitfrom this technology. In order to help keep alltechnological equipment in prime operatingcondition it is important for students to know whatis expected of them when they use schoolequipment.The following are some of the expectations that theadministration of Washington Alternative School willrequire of all students: Students should not physically damage or abuseany piece of equipment through misuse orcareless operation No DVD, flash-drive, or CD disc should beinserted into any computer without the expresspermission of the teacher No programs, software, or other “enhancers”shall be downloaded onto a computer No piece of equipment is to be disconnected,moved, or relocated Peripherals are not to be disconnected, moved,or added to existing setups Absolutely NO desktop settings or computerconfigurations are to be altered, erased, or resetSTUDENT PARKINGWashington High School (WHS) regulates studentparking with guidelines for safety and convenience.Reserved parking for students is a privilege and not aright. Conroe ISD furnishes bus transportation;therefore, WHS is not obligated to furnish parkingfor students. Conroe ISD/Washington High School isnot responsible for loss or damage to vehicles orproperty. The following information applies tostudents requesting a parking permit.Parking PermitThe student must provide. Proof of driver’s license Proof of liability insurance Registration and license plate number A current registration inspection sticker onvehicleTARDY POLICYStudents are expected to be in class at thedesignated time. Tardiness will cause students toreceive referrals for disciplinary action. Studentswho are more than ten minutes late will beconsidered absent resulting in academic anddisciplinary penalties.1.When a student is tardy to class past the 5-mintardy bell but less than 10 minutes, the teacherwill input the tardy into the electronicgradebook.Washington High SchoolAny student arriving to class more than 10minutes late may be considered truant to class.The teacher will mark the student as absent inthe electronic grade book, bu
