CELEBRATIONSRESTCULLODENJohn Zdechlik a native of Minneapolis,Minn., is an active composer, performer, conductor and clinician. He earned adoctorate in theory and compositionfrom the University of Minnesota, where he studied with Paul Fetler andFrank Bencriscutto. Currently, Zdechliklives in White Bear Lake, a suburb of St.Paul. For many years, he taught musictheory and composition and conductedinstrumental groups at Century College.Frank Ticheli writes:Created in 2010, Rest is a concertband adaptation of my workfor SATB chorus, There Will BeRest, which was commissionedin 1999 by the Pacific Chorale,John Alexander, conductor. Inmaking this version, I preservedalmost everything from theoriginal: harmony, dynamics, even the original registration.I also endeavored to preservecarefully the fragile beauty andquiet dignity suggested by SaraJulie Giroux had her formal educationat Louisiana State University andBoston University. She also studiedcomposition with John Williams, BillConti and Jerry Goldsmith. Much ofher early work was composing andorchestrating for film and television. Her writing credits include soundtrackscores for “White Men Can’t Jump”and the 1985 miniseries “North andSouth.” She has also arranged music forReba McIntyre, Madonna and MichaelJackson.Celebrations was commissioned by EarlC. Benson, conductor of the MedalistConcert Band of Bloomington, Minn. Itwas written to commemorate the 20thanniversary of the Medalist ConcertBand in 1988.AL FRESCOKarel Husa writes:Al Fresco has no programmaticcontent. However, the titleindicates my admiration forthe art of painting, especiallymural painting on wet plaster. And I have always beengreatly moved by the forceful, even grandiose and rough, mysterious pictures dealingwith primitive life, war, andpageantry.Al Fresco was commissioned forthe Ithaca College Concert Bandas the first of the Walter BeelerMemorial Commission Series. Thefirst performance was given by theIthaca College Concert Band (EdwardGobrecht, director) at the MENCConvention in Philadelphia on April19, 1975, with the composer as guestconductor.Teasdale’s words. However, with the removal ofthe text, I felt free to enhancecertain aspects of the music, most strikingly with theaddition of a sustained climaxon the main theme. Thisextended climax allows theband version to transcend theexpressive boundaries of astraight note-for-note setting ofthe original. Thus, both versionsare intimately tied and yetindependent of one another, each possessing its ownstrengths and unique qualities.MARCH OF THE RESISTANCEMarch of the Resistance is part of a newsuite of music from the score for “StarWars: The Force Awakens.” It wasarranged for the United States MarineBand by Paul Lavender.Culloden is an attempt to present thefolk and Gaelic “commoners’” musicduring the time of the Jacobite uprisingin Scotland 1745-46. Giroux, whileamassing the material for her work, located music written by survivorsof the Battle of Culloden, includingseveral works belonging to NielGow, who won the National FiddlingCompetition in Scotland in 1745. Thisevening’s selection, third movementof the larger work, ends on a positivenote, as according to the composer “theScots always seem to land on their feetin mid-stride, confirming their honor, heritage and steadfastness in the singlesentence: ‘I don’t know where I am togo now, but I do know, wherever I go,Scotland goes with me!’”
