H O W TO P R E PA R E Y O U R S H I P M E N T S9How to Prepare your ShipmentsPackaging GuidelinesThe following steps must be followed when packaging your shipments to ensure safe transportation of contents.UPS reserves the right to reject those packages that do not adhere to the minimum security and correct packaging guidelines.Extremely fragile or heavy objects require special packaging for safe shipment.Follow these steps for good packaging:Use a corrugated carton boxClose it securelyUse proper labelingUse a new box, big enough to include theprotective material for its contents. Make sure itis rigid and in excellent condition with nopunctures. It should be big enough to allowenough space for the protective material. To securely close the box, use a strong tape offive or more centimeters wide designedspecifically for packaging. For a timely and efficient delivery, please keepthese key points in mind when labeling thepackage: Always include the receiver’s postal codeswith the complete street address.Protect the contents Do not use masking tape or transparent scotchtape. Adhesive tapes do not provide resistanceand do not maintain packages firmly closed. Pack each article separately. Try to maintainfragile articles as separate as possible, awayfrom the corners and from the sides of the boxso as to reduce the possibility of breakage ordamage. Do not use string or paper over-wrap becauseit can get tangled or ripped in the automatedconveyor systems resulting in losses of addresslabels and/or contents. Use enough cushioning material to ensure thecontents do not easily move. Severalcentimeters of the cushioning material aroundthe contents should suffice. Always include the shipper's completeinformation.PROCEDURES An ample variety of materials can be used forprotection and cushioning like:Air-encapsulated plastic (bubble-pack), foamin place (a foam, sprayed into the box ormixed in packets, that expands and forms aprotective mold around contents), corrugatedboard dividing the contents and sturdypackaging paper or crumpled craft paper.
