Like most educationalorganizations, the COVIDcrisis forced us to stop inperson classes and adapt tovirtual platforms in order toprovide on line seminars andclasses for our members. In 2020, we presentedvirtual seminars on Rules ofNavigation, Anchoring and theMariner’s Compass. In September, FrankTimpano virtually presentedMarine Electrical Systems andfive members successfullycompleted the course. Theywere Mike Silvay, JimJuritsch, Bill Simpson, PaulBrooks and Jim Brown. At the beginning of 2021,Dave Duros presented avirtual seminar on ChartPlotter Navigation otherwiseknown as CPN. This is a freesoftware system which allowsa boater to use his/her PC,laptop, tablet, etc. as anonboard chart plotternavigation device. As you remember, therewas a brief window before theDecember 2021COVID Delta outbreak beganwhere it appeared like inperson classes might be on thehorizon. During that time, wewere able to invite the DistrictFive Boat Operator Certification(BOC) instructors down toprovide On-the- Waterperformance evaluations for ourInland Navigation (IN) andCoastal Navigation (CN)candidates.Completing IN evaluationswere Mike Silvay, JimJuritsch and Bill Simpson. This completed the IN programfor Mike and Jim and they wereawarded the USPS InlandNavigation rating.CN On-the-Waterevaluations were completed byJim Zeigler, Frank Timpano,Mike Silvay, Ernie Burnettand Bill Simpson. This eventcompleted the CN program forJim Zeigler, Ernie Burnett andFrank Timpano and they wereawarded the USPS CoastalNavigation rating.Jim Zeigler concurrentlyqualified as a BOC Certifier forIN and CN which is a greatboon for our squadron for futureBOC training. Volume 60, Issue 1the Bullhorn!December 2021What’s in a NameThe “America’ Boating Club”branding was adopted in 2017 toupdate our public image. While our educational programs aresuperb and excel at building knowledgeand skill, our traditional promotionalimage is not working. Our name, the United States PowerSquadrons, does not resonate with thepublic. Are we the post office (USPS)?What does a “squadron” mean? Whatdoes “power” mean? Nowhere does itimply that we are a boatingorganization.Consequently, we need to updateour image to appeal to today’s boaters. We must identify who we are, what wedo, and why someone should beinterested in becoming a member. To learn more about the re-brandingproject, read the “America’s BoatingClub Marketing Guide” by following thefollowing path: USPS.org – MembersSite – Departments – Secretary –Communications Committee StandardsLCheck out the waterway GuideThe Waterway Guide, which is stillheadquartered in Deltaville, VA,provides an easy to use, on-lineresource to boaters. It has grown fromthe days of just providing informationin the Intracoastal Waterway. One feature is the “Alerts” whichprovide hazard and safety informationdirectly on a nautical chart. Just scrollto the area in which you are interestedand look for yellow “Alert” symbols. These can be as detailed as warningof shoaling in Jackson Creek inDeltaville or missing aids to navigationon the Potomac. And these “Alerts”are generally posted on the same daythey are received by the Coast Guard. The on-line resource also providesup-to-date information on marinas andanchorages. It is easy to access. Just go toWaterwayGuide.com.The Bullhorn 8
