"Bud" Baeslack IIIProvost and Executive Vice PresidentCase Western Reserve University (http://case.edu) is one of thenation’s leading independent research universities, with programs thatencompass the arts and sciences, engineering, the health sciences, law,management, and social work.Brief HistoryAlthough its origins date to 1826, the university in its present form is theresult of the 1967 federation of Case Institute of Technology and WesternReserve University. The two institutions had shared adjacent campusessince the late nineteenth century and were involved in cooperative effortsfor many years. Western Reserve College was founded in 1826 in Hudson,Ohio, a town 26 miles southeast of Cleveland. The college took its namefrom that of the region, which at the time of the American Revolution,was known as the Western Reserve of Connecticut. In 1884, renamedWestern Reserve University and boasting a medical school in additionto its undergraduate programs, the institution moved to the Clevelandsite that later became known as University Circle. There it joined theCase School of Applied Science, founded in 1880 through the bequestof Leonard Case Jr., a leading benefactor and Cleveland civic leader. Outcome assessment is embraced as a means that canlead to improvements in teaching and learning, plus provide evidence ofteaching effectiveness for institutional purposes.ClevelandFrom a settlement that began centuries ago on the banks of theCuyahoga River, Cleveland has grown into a metropolis of close to 3million people. The heritage of this Great Lakes port includes industrialachievement as well as cultural and scientific advances. The Clevelandarea is headquarters for many of the nation’s major corporations. The cityis also a major banking center; the Fourth District Federal Reserve Bank,one of 12 in the nation, is located here.Health care is another thriving Cleveland industry. Dozens of hospitalsand medical centers are concentrated in the area. University Hospitals,the Cleveland Clinic, the MetroHealth Medical Center, and others haveattained international recognition for outstanding patient care andcontributions to medical research.Greater Cleveland is dotted with shopping malls, theaters, andopportunities for sports and amusement. 2017-2018 Case Western Reserve UniversityCASE SCHOOL OFENGINEERINGEngineering seeks to create new processes, products, methods,materials, or systems that impact and are beneficial to our society. Toenable its graduates to lead the advancement of technology, the CaseSchool of Engineering (http://engineering.case.edu) offers thirteendegree programs at the undergraduate level (eleven engineeringdegrees, plus the BS in computer science and the BS in data scienceand analytics). At the post-graduate level, the School of Engineeringoffers Master of Science programs and the Doctor of Philosophy foradvanced, research-based study in engineering. The Case School ofEngineering offers two specialized degrees at the master’s level: a Masterof Engineering specifically for practicing engineers, and an integratedMaster of Engineering and Management jointly administered with theWeatherhead School of Management. The Case School of Engineeringoffers Graduate Certificates which provide an introductory graduate levelunderstanding in the fields of Wireless Health, Wireless Health ProductDevelopment, Health Information Technology, Security in Computing,Mobility-Driven Computing and Wearable Computing. The Case Schoolof Engineering also offers two dual-degrees at the graduate level jointlyadministered with the School of Medicine: a Doctor of Medicine/Masterof Science and a Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy.
