3 St. Joseph Catholic Church This Week’s Mass Schedule & EventsFROM THE PASTOR’S DESKHOLY WEEK: Passion (Palm) Sunday throughHoly Saturday. Passion Sunday, formerlycalled Palm Sunday, marks the start of HolyWeek by recalling Christ’s triumphal entryinto Jerusalem at the beginning of the lastweek of his life (Matthew 21:1-11). A procession and other ceremonies commemoratingthe event were held in Jerusalem from the4th century and were adopted by Rome bythe 9th century. At that time, the blessing ofpalms for the occasion was introduced. Later,in the Middle Ages, a wooden statue of Christsitting on a donkey, was drawn in the centerof the procession. Holy Thursday, or MaundyThursday, commemorates the institution ofthe sacraments of Eucharist and holy orders,and features a foot-washing rite that commemorates Christ’s washing of the feet ofthe Apostles at the Last Supper. The Mass ofthe Lord’s Supper in the evening marks thebeginning of the Easter Triduum. The term“Maundy” is derived from the Latin mandatum, the first words for the rite of footwashing: “My commandment is: love one another as I have loved you.” From the Latin for“three days,” the Triduum continues untilVespers (evening Prayer) on Easter Sunday.Good Friday commemorates the Passion anddeath of Christ. The liturgy includes thereading of the Passion according to John,special prayers of the Church, civil rulers,and people of all ranks, the veneration of thecross, and a communion service.
