The Leadership Academy MissionStudent Involvement and Leadership Development’s (SILD) Leadership Academyprovides leadership skill development opportunities focused on learning and selfreflection through a series of workshops, activities and interactions that will empowerstudents to become leaders at NIU and beyond.The Leadership Academy Program GoalsThe Leadership Academy is committed to: Enhancing students’ self-awarenessPreparing students to have a positive impact at NIU and the greater communityDeveloping students’ leadership skills to enhance their future personal and careersuccessFostering connections between students and the UniversityOverview of the Leadership AcademyThe Leadership Academy is a three-tiered, self-paced leadership program. In theLeadership Academy, students have the opportunity to join organizations, attendworkshops, write reflections, present their learnings to others and much more.Tier I: Personal Leadership: Tier I is an introductory leadership tier that allowsstudents to learn more about their personal leadership style and what it means to be a“leader”.Tier II: Campus and Community Leadership: Tier II provides students with theopportunity to develop their individualized leadership styles in the NIU and DeKalbcommunity. At the conclusion of Tier II, students will earn a leadership certificate.Tier III: Leadership Culmination: Tier III allows student leaders to formallysummarize and reflect on leadership skills they have gained throughout the LeadershipAcademy. At the end of Tier III, students will receive the honor of Leadership AcademyDistinguished Leader. Students who receive the Distinguished Leader honor will berecognized during SILD’s Kevin D. Knight Leadership Awards Ceremony and willreceive a graduation cord to wear during their graduation ceremony.The Leadership Academy is open to all NIU undergraduate students. Students can beginthe Leadership Academy at any time by completing an application on Huskie Link.2

Leadership FrameworkActivities for the Leadership Academy are based on the Social Change Model ofLeadership Development, which provides opportunities for students to enhance theirlearning and facilitate positive social change. By participating in the LeadershipAcademy, students will be able to understand and apply the 7 C’s of leadership:consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose,controversy with civility and citizenship (Komives and Wagner, 2009).Tier III: Leadership CulminationAt this point in the Leadership Academy, students have been involved in a variety ofpersonal, campus and community leadership activities. The purpose of Tier III is forstudents to reflect on the leadership skills they have developed and the activities theyhave completed. Students in this Tier will be able to formally present their experiencesin addition to attending workshops and completing their final Leadership Skills SelfAssessment.Learning OutcomesThrough completing activities in Tier III, students will be able to: Articulate their leadership role on campus and in the NIU communityDemonstrate how their leadership skills are transferable to a future careerUnderstand how their leadership skills have developed throughout theLeadership Academy how they will continue to enhance their leadership skillsTier III Activities (complete all activities)1) Complete at least 15 hours of community service.o Community service can be completed through a student organization orindividually. Write a reflection that describes the community serviceactivity(ies), your thoughts on completing the activity(ies), the importanceof continuing to serve the community and how this service experience(s)impacted your leadership skills. Submit the reflection to Huskie Link.o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 33

2) Attend at least two Leadership Academy meetings or equivalent.o Each semester, three Leadership Academy general meetings will be held.During your Tier, you must attend at least two of these meetings. Duringthese meetings, you will have an opportunity to network and interact withyour Leadership Academy peers and Leadership staff members.Leadership discussions, activities and reflections will also take place.o If you choose to be a mentor, then meeting with your mentee can providecredit for this activity.o Fulfills objective 33) Organize, plan and execute an event, activity, or project through your group,organization, community service initiative, etc.o This presentation can be the diversity event that you and a fellow tier 2member created previously.o Write a reflection about your experience. Include what the event/activityentailed, your role in planning, organizing and executing theevent/activity, any struggles and successes you encountered and theoutcome of the event/activity. Submit your reflection to Huskie Link.o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 34) Either attend at least two (2) Leadership Academy workshops or attend one (1)Leadership Academy workshop and present at one (1) general meeting.o You will have the option to facilitate a 15-minute presentation at the end ofa general meeting on a topic that has been preapproved by both theAssistant Director and Graduate Assistant.o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 35) Schedule a meeting with Career Services to discuss your resume.o After meeting with a staff member from Career Services, write a reflectionon what was discussed during the meeting, what about the meetingwas/was not helpful and elaborate on how you will be able to use theleadership skills you have gained throughout your time at NIU in yourfuture career. 6) Complete the Leadership Skills Self-Assessment.o The Leadership Skills Self-Assessment is designed to evaluate yourknowledge and experience with various leadership skills. Students alsocompleted this assessment during Tier I. The assessment is required inTier III in order for students to observe growth in various leadership areas.o Fulfills objective 1, 37) Meet with the Assistant Director or Graduate Assistant for LeadershipDevelopment at least once during Tier III to discuss your progress in Tier III andyour progress on the Tier III online portfolio (Online Portfolio Instructions areavailable at www.leadershipacademy.niu.edu).o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 38) Complete your online portfolio.o At the conclusion of Tier III, your online portfolio should be complete anduploaded to Huskie Link. You can view the detailed portfolio instructionsat www.leadershipacademy.niu.edu. The online portfolio will include anoverall reflection of your experience in the Leadership Academy.o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 39) Portfolio presentation.o Students are also required to provide a 15-20 minute presentation of theironline portfolio to students and staff at NIU. The Assistant Director forLeadership Development will provide you with additional details about theportfolio presentation.o Fulfills objectives 1, 2, 3Distinguished LeaderAfter completing Tier III requirements, you must schedule a meeting with the AssistantDirector for Leadership Development. During this meeting, should you fulfill all of theLeadership Academy criteria, the Assistant Director will confirm your completion of theLeadership Academy. After your completion of the Leadership Academy, you will berecognized as a Distinguished Leader. You will be formally recognized during our KevinD. Knight Leadership Awards Ceremony and you will receive a Leadership Academygraduation cord to wear during your graduation ceremony.5

Further HonorsIf you wish to further expand upon your leadership development process, pleaseindicate your intentions to the Assistant Director or Graduate Assistant. A set ofoptional activities are currently being put together that will allow students to obtain a 7C’s Honors distinction along with the Distinguished Leader title.Assistant Director and Graduate Assistant for Leadership DevelopmentThe Leadership Academy requires you to meet with either the Assistant Director orGraduate Assistant for Leadership Development in SILD.
