BAYER Fellowship ProgramThe foundation’s scholarship programs have twomain areas of focus – the regular programs forscholarship projects and placements abroad,and additional offerings aimed at specific targetgroups.The regular programs are setup for students,trainees and apprentices in scientific, technicaland medical disciplines. Internationality is a keyaspect of these programs. Otto Bayer scholarshipsOtto Bayer scholarships are open to universitystudents in their advanced study period.The following disciplines are particularly in focus: Biology, biochemistry, biotechnology Chemistry, chemical engineering, processengineering Pharmaceutics, drug discovery Physics, material sciencesEnvironmental sciencesThe scholarships can be used for individual studyprojects, internships, summer courses, supplementary study courses, as well as master’s thesesand doctoral studies. The program does notinclude postdoctoral scholarships. BAYER Fellowship programThe benefactor Professor Otto BayerProfessor Otto Bayer, who was not related to the familythat founded the Bayer Group, joined the company in1933, when he became head of the Central ScientificLaboratory. Although Otto Bayer was only 32 years old atthat time and the youngest member of the team, he soonsucceeded in making a name for himself: his greatestachievement was ultimately the invention of polyurethanechemistry. He influenced the development of thisversatile family of plastics for many years until his deathat the age of nearly 80. Thanks to the chemical andentrepreneurial achievements of the inventor ofpolyurethanes, the Bayer Group still holds a large shareof the world market for these materials.Sonja Tattermusch used her scholarship from theBayer foundations to supplement her biochemistrystudies in Witten-Herdecke with a research semesterat the famous Pasteur Institute in Paris.6 7

Carl duisberg scholarshipsCarl Duisberg scholarships are open to studentsofhuman and veterinary medicine, andmedical sciencesin their advanced study period. Key support areasare medical projects associated with the fields ofcardiology, oncology, inflammation, gynecologyand diagnostic imaging, or projects focusing onpublic social health.The scholarships can be used for a clinicaltraineeship (Famulatur), for interships (PJ) andfor examinations, master’s theses and doctoralstudies. BAYER Fellowship programThe benefactor Dr. Carl DuisbergDr. Carl Duisberg is one of the central figures in thehistory of the Bayer Group and the German chemicaland pharmaceutical industry as a whole. Serving formany years as Director General of Farbenfabrikenvorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co., his influence on nearly alldevelopments in the various parts of the companywas instrumental in Bayer’s progress on the road tobecoming an international company. The Bayer executive is also remembered for his social achievements.Duisberg is regarded as the prototype of a new type ofindustrialist whose self-image was determined by anobligation toward society.The two Freiburg medical students Frauke Schaffrath and LarsRoeddiger gained valuable experience in their interships at theSt. George’s University in Grenada thanks to a scholarship fromthe Bayer foundations.8 9

Kurt hansen scholarshipsKurt Hansen scholarships are aimed atsupportingstudents studying to become scienceteachers, andyoung science teachers.The scholarships can be used for studyprojects, internships, summer courses, supplementary study courses, as well as theses anddoctoral studies. BAYER Fellowship programThe benefactor Professor Kurt HansenProfessor Kurt Hansen, who served as chairmanof the Board of Management of Bayer AG from1962 to 1974, was the driving force for a largeexpanding of Bayer’s international position, particularly outside of Europe. For the natural scientistand certified management assistant, support forresearch in the fields of science and medicine wasof central importance for the long-term success ofthe company.A scholarship from the Bayer foundations enabledJörg Klein, who studies chemistry at the Universityof Erlangen, to spend a few months at the Academyof Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague.10 11

BAYER Fellowship programThe benefactor Hermann Josef StrengerHermann Josef Strenger began his career at Bayeras a commercial trainee in 1949. His father too hadworked for the company. In 1984 he took over fromDr. Herbert Grünewald as chairman of the company’sBoard of Management. Bayer’s positive businessdevelopment during Strenger’s tenure as Bayer’schairman was associated with a broadly basedenvironmental protection program. He introduceda corporate philosophy in which ecology and economy were declared to be corporate objectives ofequal rank.Thanks to a Hermann Strenger scholarship,ergotherapist Martina Knittel was able to gainpractical experience at the Red Cross Children’sHospital in Rondebosch in South Africa.12 13

Bayer deutschlandstipendienThe Bayer Science & Education Foundationsupports the national scholarship programact of the German government and funds100 Deutschlandstipendien for ambitious talentsstudying natural sciences and technology.Germany is the main center for Bayer’sworldwide research activities. Supportingexcellent young scientists in Germany istherefore a key element for Bayer’s successas an inventor company.Throughout the summer semester 2011, theBayer foundation will make additional fundsavailable for this program in the total amount of 900,000 over five years. The installments willbe made for 100 study places at 23 selecteduniversities in Germany. The scholars will benominated by their home universities.

Additional Fellowship offeringsBayer Lindau FellowshipThe Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are aninternationally acknowledged platform for topscientists and a springboard for globalknowledge exchange. Starting in 2010, theBayer Science & Education Foundation enables20-30 young scientists from around the worldto take part in this exciting and exclusive eventevery year.For this program the Bayer foundation providesadditional travel grants in a total amount of 50,000 every year. The participants will beselected by the national academies of scienceof their home countries and officially appointedby a high-profile panel of judges from the LindauNobel Laureate Meetings.As an additional benefit, the Bayer foundationoffers the Lindau Fellows the opportunity to talkto Bayer researchers. They can discuss thelatest scientific issues and present their ownprojects at a Bayer Poster Day. Bayer scholarships for schoolchildrenWith the Bayer scholarships for schoolchildren,the foundation offers students the opportunity toparticipate in international summer school campswith a special focus on natural science topics.The program is open to talented schoolchildrenwho show a particular interest in science andtechnology.

Additional Fellowship offeringsCurrently the foundation supports theBayer Climate Fellowship programEvery year 5-10 school students receive atravel grant to participate in a scientific summercamp dedicated to climate protection andsustainability topics in Pittsburgh (USA).The participants travel to the USA for a twoweek science camp – the Bayer SustainabilityCamp. Together with young Americans, theBayer Climate Fellows do research work regarding climate change, climate protection andsustainability.The camp is organized by the nonprofitorganization RiverQuest based in Pittsburgh.RiverQuest has already received multipleawards for its education programs and hasbeen collaborating with the Bayer USAFoundation for a number of years.Further information:www.bayer-foundations.comLeonie Brueggenwerth and Martin Rohbeck were twoof the first Bayer Climate Fellows in 2008. Here they areseen taking water and sediment samples from the OhioRiver near Pittsburgh for subsequent analysis under amicroscope.16 17
