1CONDITIONS FOR INDEPENDENT RESEARCHFUND DENMARK SUPPORT FOR RESEARCHIndependent Research Fund Denmark’s (DFF s) main task is to provide financial support to concreteand fixed-term research activities based on researchers’ own ideas. The fund considers it its primarytask to support the growth layer and the continued development within independent, researcher-initiated research. DFF puts decisive weight on the professional research quality being maintained in theprojects it supports. The DFF strategy and policies can be found on the fund’s website dff.dk.The legislative basis for DFF is Act no. 384 of 26 April 2017 on the Danish Council for Research andInnovation Policy and Independent Research Fund Denmark.1.1 GUIDE TO THIS CALLIn this call you can read about the options available to you as applicant and about the applicant andapplication requirements. The structure of the call has been changed to provide more clarity. Youshould read the entire call, with the exception of section 2 where you only need to read section 2.1 andsection 2.2, and the section about the instrument you are applying to.1.2 DFF’S CALL FOR PROPOSALS AUTUMN 2020 AND SPRING 2021With this Call for Proposals, DFF invites applications for grants for research activities. The information in this call applies to applications submitted for the application deadlines in autumn 2020 and inspring 2021 - see the precise application deadlines in Section 2.2. The ability of the fund to offer thefunding instruments mentioned in Section 2 is dependent on the level of funding for 2021 being equivalent to that of 2020. As the national budget for 2021 will not be confirmed until the end of 2020, thefund is unable to guarantee that all funding instruments will be offered in 2021.This document is a translation into English of the fund’s Danish Call for Proposals. In case of anyinconsistencies between the two versions, the information in the Danish version shall apply.1.3 INTERNATIONALISATIONDFF wants to strengthen and further develop the internationalisation of Danish research and therefore wishes to see applications including international activities submitted to the fund. The objectiveis that the best researchers and research groups have the opportunity to coordinate and develop theircross-border research collaboration, and that talented researchers have the opportunity to spend a period of their research career abroad. Aspects of internationalisation can therefore figure in applicationsto all of DFF’s instruments. In any case, the applications are required to be related to the internationalstate of the art within their area.1.4 GENDER BALANCEDFF also wants to support a balanced development of management resources for both genders atDanish research institutions and would like to see this being taken into consideration in applicationsto DFF. Therefore, DFF recommends that applications, as best possible, demonstrate an approach toscientific practice that can act as an incubator for professional diversity and equal opportunities formale and female researchers. For applications seeking support for research groups or similar collaborative projects, the applicant should account for his/her considerations for the gender make-up of theresearch group or collaborative team. A statement of this is a requirement, but the actual gender makeup of the group will not factor into the assessment of the application. The required statement has beenintroduced to ensure the applicant’s focus on contributing to equal opportunities for men and womenin research.Independent Research Fund Denmark - Call for proposals Autumn 2020 and Spring 20213

1.5 OPEN ACCESSDFF finds it important to strengthen the societal effect of research by ensuring unrestricted and costfree digital access to all the latest research results in scientific articles. Therefore, Independent Research Fund Denmark, the Danish National Research Foundation, and Innovation Fund Denmarkadopted the “Open Access Policy for public research funds and foundations” in April 2019, whichrequires parallel publishing of published scientific articles resulting from full or partial funding fromthese foundations. DFF, however, does not provide financial support for open access publishing as thefund allows for a quarantine period of 6-12 months. For further information on DFF’s Open Accesspolicy, see DFF’s website.1.6 RESEARCH INTEGRITYDFF expects that grant recipients will follow The Danish Code of Coduct for Research Integrity.1.7 SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO AUTUMN 2020-SPRING 2021 CALLNow the maximum length of the project description is also specified as a maximum number of characters. For instruments having a deadline for application on 26 March 2021, DFF will introduce an automatic validation of the project description so that applications, which exceed the maximum number ofspecified pages and characters, cannot be submitted. The reference list appertaining to the project description must now be uploaded as a separate appendix(B11).The instrument Research Networks Humanities will not be allocated in A2020 and S2021, but isexpected to be reintroduced in autumn 2021.DFF Humanities offers funding of research within IT and technology studies in the Humanities. It has been made clear that a key aim of the instrument Sapere Aude: DFF-Starting Grant is to advancecareers. There are less council-specific conditions compared to last year’s call for proposals. The amount that can be applied for in connection with the instrument Journals Humanities, has beenraised from DKK 30,000 per year to DKK 50,000 per year. The amount that can be applied for in connection with the instrument International research stay Social Sciences, has been reduced from DKK 300,000 to DKK 200,000.There are changes within the area of data protection. See more in section 6.4.To the requirements, for your application to be given active consideration, has been added, that applicants must have at least a PhD degree (does not apply to the Non-university Research Education(PhD)), applications for Pre-graduate scholarship Medical Sciences must be submitted by the mainsupervisor, and the main supervisor may not have more than one ongoing grant at a time. Please note: DFF Social Sciences does not receive any further urgent applications forcorona-related research in the fiscal year 2020.Independent Research Fund Denmark - Call for proposals Autumn 2020 and Spring 20214

1.8 ABOUT INDEPENDENT RESEARCH FUND DENMARKDFF supports independent research based on the researchers’ own ideas within and across all the mainfields of science. DFF is comprised of a Board of Directors, five research councils and one cross-council committee:DFF Humanities offers funding to researchers who work within the following disciplines: Arthistory, architecture and design, media studies, film studies, musicology, IT and technology studies in the Humanities, comparative literature, dramaturgy, philology, linguistics, communicationresearch, anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, history, philosophy, history of ideas and science, theology, comparative religion, educational theory, pedagogy, psychology and other related research disciplines within the humanities, such as library research, museology, as well as humanisticresearch within sports science, public health, urban and physical planning.DFF Natural Sciences offers funding to researchers who investigate fundamental scientific issueswithin the natural sciences, computer science and mathematics, with an epistemological but not necessarily an applied scientific objective. The Council covers research within the classical disciplines:Astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, molecular biology, biochemistry/biophysics, biology, geology as well as the natural science aspects of geography.DFF Social Sciences offers funding to researchers who work within the social sciences. DFF Social Sciences covers the following main disciplines: economics, sociology, political science andlegal theory, as well as the societal aspects of various interdisciplinary subjects (e.g. communicationstudies, development studies, gender studies and cultural geography).DFF Medical Sciences offers funding to researchers who work with all aspects of basic, translational, clinical and socio-medical research in relation to human health and disease.DFF Technology and Production Sciences funds researchers carrying out basic researchwithin technology and production sciences which is: a) motivated by a specific problem or having aclear application-oriented perspective; and b) aimed at solving a specific problem, developing newtechnologies and production systems or new ways of meeting the needs of society. Please note thatneither epistemological research without any application-oriented perspectives nor developmentactivities will be supported.DFF Cross-council committee comprises representatives from all five research councils and coordinates the handling procedure for applications that fall within the boundaries between the councils. The cross-council committee also funds applications that are considered to be truly cross-council(see Section 5.5), as well as applications to Sapere Aude: DFF-Starting Grant and Research educations outside the universities (PhD).1.9 DELIMITATIONS BETWEEN THE RESEARCH COUNCILSThe DFF board determines the research delimitations between the five research councils. The delimitations are described in the table below. It is natural to find applicants and projects that cross thedelimitations as described. Some will be viewed within a single council while others, in collaborationwith several councils. DFF welcomes applications of an interdisciplinary nature, in which case they willbe coordinated by the cross-council committee. In Section 5.3 you can learn more about how to applyto several research councils, while in Section 5.5 you can learn how cross-council applications arehandled.Independent Research Fund Denmark - Call for proposals Autumn 2020 and Spring 20215

DFF NaturalSciencesDFF SocialSciencesDFF MedicalSciencesDFF Technology andProduction SciencesDFF HumanitiesIn the delimitation betweenDFF Humanities andDFF Natural Sciences the decisive principle is that projects thatpredominantly concern humans’culture-forming and culturedisseminating phenomena andactivities (e.g. didactics, sportsand archaeology) are covered byDFF Humanities, whereasresearch projects primarilyconcerned with cognitive-forming activities which fall withinthe natural sciences, shouldbe assessed by DFF NaturalSciences. In the delimitation betweenDFF Humanities andDFF Social Sciences, thedecisive principle is that projectswhich predominantly concernrelations between human behaviour and institutions (groups, enterprises, organisations andsociety) are covered byDFF Social Sciences, whereasprojects which predominantlyconcern culture-analytical andhistorical aspects, or involvespecial language and othercommunicative qualifications areassessed by DFF Humanities. In the delimitation betweenDFF Humanities andDFF Medical Sciences, thedecisive principle is that projectswhich predominantly concernpsychology are covered byDFF Humanities, whereas projects mostly involving psychiatryshould be assessed byDFF Medical Sciences. There isa certain overlap between thesedisciplines, but generallyspeaking, the applicationsconsidered by DFF MedicalSciences are characterised by abiological research theme. Forexample, medical history is usually covered by DFF Humanities, but if a medical history projectinvolves an element ofbiological research, it may insome cases belong to DFF Medical Sciences. Projectsinvestigating humanistic aspectsof medical science will becovered by DFF Humanities.Generally, for a project to belongto DFF Medical Sciences it isnot sufficient that the object ofstudy is medicine – the appliedmethodology must also originatein medical science. In the delimitation betweenDFF Humanities andDFF Technology and ProductionSciences, the decisive principleis that projects which predominantly concern humans’culture-forming and culture-disseminating phenomena andactivities are covered byDFF Humanities. This appliese.g. to media research, designresearch and linguistics. Projects which primarily involve atechnical research element willgenerally be assessed byDFF Technology and Production Sciences.DFF NaturalSciencesBlankIn the delimitation betweenDFF Natural Sciences andDFF Social Sciences, thedecisive principle is that projectswhich predominantly concernhuman behaviour, organisationalmatters or managerial processesare covered by DFF SocialSciences, whereas projectswhich predominantly concernnatural science activities areassessed by DFF NaturalSciences. In the delimitation betweenDFF Natural Sciences andDFF Medical Sciences, thedecisive principle is that researchprojects which predominantlyhave fundamental scientific, epistemological aim are coveredby DFF Natural Sciences. Please note that there may be minordifferences in relation to the specific requirements each council has for the various instruments. Youshould therefore read all of Sections 1 and 3-6, as well as the description of the instrument you wish toapply for in Section 2 very thoroughly before you complete and submit your application. You can beginyour application in e-grant approx. three months before the application deadline.2.1 ALREADY STARTED PROJECTSDFF does not provide retroactive funding. You can therefore not apply for research funding for activities that have already taken place by the time the fund makes its decision.2.2 APPLICATION DEADLINE AND START DATE FOR PROJECTSThe earliest and latest possible starting dates for each instrument are listed in the table below: Note, the deadline is 12:00 noon for every application deadline date.Instruments offered by all councils:InstrumentBudget frameworkfor DFF grantDFF-InternationalPostdoctoral GrantSee description underthe instrumentSapere Aude:DFF- Starting GrantUp to DKK 4.3 millionexcluding overhead /administration expensesResearch counciloffering theinstrument andapplication deadlineAll councils:6 October 2020 at 12:00 noon and26 March 2021 at 12:00 noonAll councils:24 March 2021 at 12:00 noonTime ofprocessingEarliest and lateststarting dates forthe projectApplied autumn 2020:Earliest: 1 March 2021Latest: 1 September 2021November 2020 andJune 2021November 2021Independent Research Fund Denmark - Call for proposals Autumn 2020 and Spring 2021Applied spring 2021:Earliest: 1 September 2021Latest: 1 March 2022Earliest: 1 January 2022Latest: 1 December 20227

COUNCIL-SPECIFIC CONDITIONSDFF Social Sciences is the only council to receive urgent applications.Urgent applications for DFF Social Sciences can only be considered for DFF Research Project1 or DFF Research Project2. Urgent applications can only be drawn up on the basis of a pre-authorisation of the urgencyfactor, which must be scientifically backed up by extremely special, external and unpredictable events. Thepre-authorisation is determined by DFF Social Sciences and takes place following an application to thesecretariat.DFF Social Sciences does not receive any further urgent applications for corona-related research in the fiscalyear 2020, unless unexpected and presently unpredictable turns of the crisis emerge that could lead the council to re-open new emergency application possibilities.2.3 INSTRUMENTS OFFERED BY ALL COUNCILS2.3.1DFF-International Postdoctoral Grant2.3.1.1 ObjectiveThe objective of DFF-International Postdoctoral Grant is to strengthen the international mobility ofyoung talented researchers, as well as to develop the competencies of researchers who are in the beginning of their research career. The aim is to enable the grant recipient to consolidate his or her individual research profile by managing a specific research project in an independent manner at a researchinstitution outside of Denmark. The grant amounts to a total of DKK 1.3 million over a 2-year period.2.3.1.2 Applicant requirementsResearchers who have a PhD or are expected to submit their thesis for defence within 6 months afterthe application deadline, or have obtained equivalent qualifications (e.g., a positive assistant professorassessment (”adjunktbedømmelse”) may apply for a DFF-International Postdoctoral Grant. Your PhDmust have been received from a Danish research institution. As PhD student you may apply, provided you attach a declaration from your supervisor stating thatyour thesis will be submitted within 6 months of the application deadline. If you are awarded aDFF-International Postdoctoral Grant, but subsequently fail to submit your PhD thesis within the given deadline, the grant will be annulled. Please note that your PhD diploma must be submitted to DFFbefore the first instalment can be made.DFF emphasises that applicants are at the beginning of their research career. Thus, calculated from theapplication deadline, no more than 3 years must have elapsed since you obtained your PhD. The precise date for obtaining the PhD, as it appears on the PhD diploma, is to be stated in the application formin e-grant (cf. section 4.3.5 concerning calculation of the PhD age with regard to maternity leave, etc.).The application must be completed and submitted by yourself as the applicant. As applicant, you cannot apply for funding of a stay at a foreign research institution, where you havestayed for a total of 12 months or more at the time of application.2.3.1.3 The applicationA DFF-International Postdoctoral Grant must be of a duration of 2 years.Independent Research Fund Denmark - Call for proposals Autumn 2020 and Spring 20219
