Catheter Insurance CoverageCoudé Tip Insurance CoverageA Coudé, or curved tip catheter is sometimes needed when a straight tipcatheter is not easily inserted. There are various clinical reasons why thiscatheter may be prescribed and its recommendation is always at the discretionof your health care provider. A coudé catheter is not the most commonly usedcatheter, but it is certainly an excellent option in some situations. If your healthcare provider prescribes a coudé tip, Byram and your insurer will requiredocumentation stating the reason you are unable to pass a straight tip catheter.Medicare Allowable AmountsIn April 2008, Medicare changed the reimbursement of intermittent cathetersfrom 4 to 200 per month. Intermittent catheters should not be washed andreused. These catheters are single use devices. If you require more than the 200 catheters per month designated by Medicare, your doctor will need to note why you need more and send the documentationto Byram Healthcare. If you have experienced two or more symptomatic, documented UTIs within 12 months while on a program of catheterizing, then you may qualify for a higher quantity of intermittent catheters or sterileintermittent catheter kits.Caring Touch at Home Continence Care10

EducationTypes of CathetersByram Healthcare offers a large variety of catheters to meet the specific needsof each of our patients. Below is a brief description of each catheter type.Intermittent catheter: A straight tip catheter made of a variety of differentmaterials (rubber, vinyl, latex, or silicone).Intermittent Hydrophilic catheter: This catheter is ideal for children or adultpatients since it easily glides through the urethra. The “slippery” coating isactivated by dipping the catheter in either water or normal saline solution.Intermittent Coude catheter: This catheter has a curved tip and is ideal forpatients with enlarged prostates, urethral narrowing or scar tissue.Closed System Intermittent Catheter and Bag: This catheter is prelubricatedand has a collection bag that is attached to the catheter. It is not only convenientbut also touchless which allows it to be inserted into the urethra withoutcontamination.Intermittent Catheter Kits: All of the above catheters are available with insertionsupplies which then classifies them as a “kit.” Catheter kits are ideal for patientswho have a history of Urinary Tract Infections or who are immunosuppressed.Additional documentation from the healthcare provider is required for a catheter kit.Urinary Tract InfectionsUrinary Tract Infections are not uncommon in individuals who intermittentlycatheterize. However, it is important to try to prevent UTIs for optimal health.A UTI can lead to a more serious infection if it goes from the bladder up into thekidneys and into the bloodstream. Although there are many effective antibioticsto treat UTIs, it is much better to prevent a UTI and the need for medication.Common causes of UTIs related to Intermittent Catheterization: Inadequate fluid intake Inadequate frequency of emptying your bladder Incomplete emptying of your bladder when you catheterize Poor technique allows bacteria to travel up your urinary tract with thecatheter– Unwashed hands and/or equipment can harbor bacteriaContinence Care1-800-364-605711

EducationSymptoms of a UTI? Fever, Chills Leakage between catheterizations Increased bladder spasms Feeling the need to catheterize more often or immediately Burning sensation in the urethra Nausea Feeling lousy or tired Sediment (gritty particles) in your urine Cloudy, bloody or foul smelling urineeducationHow do I know if I have a UTI?Your doctor can do a simple urine test to determine if there are bacteria inyour urine. This test will also help to identify the correct antibiotic for you. Ifyour doctor prescribes an antibiotic treatment, take your medication exactly asprescribed until it is finished. Be sure to call your doctor with any side effectsfrom the medication. What can I do to help prevent UTIs? Wash your hands thoroughly before starting the catheterization procedure Wash your genitalia with soap and water (front to back for women) Preferable: To minimize E. Coli bacteria contamination of the urethra, catheterize before your bowel program Be careful that the tip of the catheter does not touch ANYTHING prior to use Catheterize as often as your doctor instructed: usually 4-6 times a day Drink plenty of fluids, especially water I f you experience frequent UTI’s, speak with your doctor to seeif sterile intermittent catheter kits may be right for youClinical CareMailHave a question?
