IntroductionThe WOC-Institute is owned and operated by the association ofNurses Specialized in Wound Ostomy and Continence Canada(NSWOCC). Our tri-specialty is unique, and we strive to improve thelives of those patients cared for by wound, ostomy and continencenurses as well as support those healthcare professionals who havechosen this dynamic and evolving field through providingcomprehensive education and skills-based training to improve theirpractices. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Education ProgramThe WOC-Institute’s flag ship program is ourWound Ostomy and Continence EducationProgram (WOC-EP). The WOC-EP is a stateof the art, paced, 12-month, online programwhich prepares BN/BScN’s for the role of aNurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy andContinence (NSWOC). The final exam forthe program is the Canadian NursesAssociate (CNA) certification exam, which,upon achievement, enables the NSWOC touse the credential WOCC(C). The WOC-EPis a competency and standards of practiceguided, rigorous program, aimed at insuring the high quality of itsgraduates. Through the CANMeds styled, competency basedpreceptorship component of the program, the WOC-EP strives tomentor and grow tomorrows nurse leaders. NSWOCs graduates areamong the nursing elite. They demonstrate an advanced level ofcritical thinking, clinical skill and leadership qualities. The advantageof NSWOCs’ tri-specialization is especially clear when patients haveneeds that require more than one area of specialty.Employing NSWOCs is an effective strategy for controlling coststhrough high-quality, evidence-based care that leads to betteroutcomes for patients. NSWOCs bring about these benefits asdeliverers of care but also as sources of specialized knowledge forinterdisciplinary health care teams, best practice and protocoldevelopment, research and other avenues. The Skin Wellness Associate Nurse ProgramIn response of urgent need amongCanadian healthcare professionals forcontinuing education in the areas ofWound, Ostomy and Continence (WOC),the NSWOCC’s WOC-Institute developedthe competency-based Skin WellnessAssociate Nurse (SWANTM) Program. Theprogram is a 4 month, paced onlineprogram which includes a clinicalmentorship component. By preparing nonspecialty nurses to provide manage stable patients with Wound,Ostomy or Continence issues, the SWAN program aims tosupport and empower NSWOC teams to improve clinicaloutcomes. Designed to provide non-specialty nurses the ability toprovide optimal Wound, Ostomy and Continence care under thedirection of the NSWOC or other clinical specialists. Graduates ofthe program are eligible to use the SWAN designation ex: NancyNurse RPN, SWAN. The SWAN designation is a means by whichgraduates can be immediately recognized for the advancedclinical knowledge and skills they gain in the program and theirability to manage stable patient.The NSWOCC envisions that SWAN graduates will work asintegral team members along side NSWOCs and other clinicalspecialists to care for patients within their scope of practice. Thegoal of the SWANTM Program is to educate and prepare skilledpractical Wound, Ostomy and Continence nurses across thespectrum of care, in particular there is a strong place for SWANgraduates in the home-care and long-term care settings.Specifically, this program, based on the scope of practice forpractical nurses and a high national standard of care, was built toprovide practical nurses with the opportunity to advance their dayto-day knowledge of Wound, Ostomy and Continence care.WOC-INSTITUTE’S EDUCATION PROGRAMS JANUARY 20207

Foundations in Skin Health ProgramsFor nurses (RN/RPN/LPN) or other alliedhealth professionals who desire a foundationalknowledge in Wound, Ostomy and/orContinence, the WOC-Institute developed theSkin Health Programs (Foundations in Skinand Wound Management, Foundations inOstomy Management and Foundations inContinence Management). These modules canbe taken separately, allowing for flexibility andadjustment to different learning needs.TheSkin Health programs are offered two timesper year online and are run over a 10-week period. These programsare also available upon request onsite to groups of 20 or more over atwo-day intensive program. Both online and onsite programs areprovided by experienced NSWOC’s. Online and onsite “refresher”programs are available and can be customized for various healthcareteams.
