Youcan explore career ideas, retrain or add toyour job skills, or get professional help onhow to run a business. You can pursue aspecial interest or broaden your education.You can fit as much of this as you wantinto your life. You may go to school fulltime to finish a one- or two-year program.You may go part time to take a class orworkshop or two. You may attend classesand special events on the Salem Campusor at the college’s Dallas, McMinnville,Santiam, or Woodburn campuses. We alsooffer classes in schools and other locationsin communities throughout the collegedistrict. You can even stay home and takea class by television or computer.Whatever your goals and interests, we arewilling (and usually able) to meet yourneeds. We want to help you add to thequality of your life.WHAT KINDS OF EDUCATIONDOES CHEMEKETA OFFER?Basically, Chemeketa has four areas ofstudy: Professional-technical education trainsstudents who want to qualify for work inspecific fields. We offer more than 40 professional-technical training programs. Insome of these, you may earn a Certificateof Completion in one year. In most programs, you may earn an Associate ofApplied Science degree. It usually takestwo years to meet the requirements; it maytake longer if you attend part time or don’thave the prerequisite skills.In addition to vocational classes, our professional-technical programs include gen-eral education courses. The aim of thesecourses is to help you become more competent in writing and mathematics andgain knowledge of humanities, communications, sciences, and social sciences. College transfer courses are for studentswho wish to continue their education at afour-year college or university. If you successfully complete Chemeketa’s two-yearcollege transfer program, you may alsoearn an Oregon Associate of Arts transferdegree. See Page 30 for requirements.Some of our professional and technicalprograms also include courses which maybe transferred for college credit. For morespecific information, consult with aChemeketa counselor or advisor, or withthe four-year institution you wish toattend. Generally, transfer courses arenumbered 100 or above. Lifelong learning is important atChemeketa. We encourage you to continueto learn throughout your life. We offermany credit and non-credit classes, workshops, and short courses. Chemeketaclasses can help you to improve your technical, vocational, avocational, and academic knowledge and skills; to retrain fornew positions; and to continue your personal development. Developmental skill building classes areoffered for people who want to learn basicreading, writing, mathematics, and studyskills, or finish high school, or learn English as a second language.Chemeketa schedules classes during theday, evenings, and on weekends.CHEMEKETA’S FACULTYChemeketa has over 235 full-time facultymembers. In general, faculty who teachcollege transfer courses have at least amaster’s degree; some have doctorates.Faculty in professional-technical programsgenerally have a rich background whichcombines education with practical, on-thejob experience. In addition, we hire anaverage of 600 adjunct faculty each year.1

Many of them teach evening classes onsubjects directly related to their full-timejobs in the community.HOW ARE WE SUPPORTED?As a public institution, most of the college’s financial support comes from localproperty taxes, state school support funds,tuition, and fees.WHAT IS OUR HISTORY?Chemeketa’s roots began in 1955 whenthe local school district established SalemTechnical Vocational School. The community college district was formed in September 1969.OUR CREDENTIALSThe Northwest Association of Schools andColleges granted full accreditation toChemeketa in December 1972. In addition, the Oregon Department of Educationhas approved all of our professional-technical programs and college transfercourses. Professional associations havealso accredited those professional-technical programs which require approval.For more information on accreditation andapprovals, contact the office of the VicePresident of Academic Services in Building 5 on the Salem Campus at(503) 399-5144.WHERE IS CHEMEKETA?The Chemeketa Community College district covers more than 2,600 square milesin Oregon’s Mid-Willamette Valley. Itincludes Marion, Polk, most of Yamhill,and part of Linn counties.We consider the entire college district asour campus. Our 194-acre main campus islocated at 4000 Lancaster Drive N.E.,Salem. We have campuses in Dallas,McMinnville, Sublimity, and Woodburn.We also schedule credit and non-creditclasses, workshops, seminars, and specialprograms in about 25 communitiesthroughout the college district. Theseclasses meet during the day, evening, andon weekends in schools, businesses,churches, and homes.Our Training and Economic DevelopmentCenter is located in Liberty Square, at 365Ferry Street S.E., in downtown Salem.WHAT KIND OF FACILITIESDOES CHEMEKETA HAVE?(See “Finding your way.” below.)Chemeketa’s Salem Campus has 10 majorbuildings and a number of smaller buildings. Building 2 houses the Advising andCounseling Center, Tutoring ServicesCenter, Study Skills Center, and the Planetarium.The Learning Resource Center is locatedin Building 9. It includes Media Services,where you may access videos, audio tapes,laser discs and other audio-visual materials, and the Library, where you mayaccess reference books, indexes to journals and magazines and the general bookcollection. The Learning Resource Centeralso includes a television studio, teleconferencing capability, and facilities foraudio, graphics and multimedia production.Our science and health building has modern, well-equipped laboratories for scienceand health-related programs. In the physical education building are workout andweight rooms, racquetball courts, and agymnasium. Chemeketa’s Dallas,McMinnville, Santiam, and Woodburncampuses have classrooms, up-to-date laboratories, and offices.WHO ARE CHEMEKETA’SSTUDENTS?You will not find a “typical” student atChemeketa. Our students are all ages,from recent high school graduates toretired grandparents. They have manydifferent goals. Some people come toChemeketa to train or retrain for newcareers or to update their professionaltechnical skills; others return to school toincrease their knowledge, learn new skills,or to get to know more about themselvesand their relationships with other people.Some of our students attend full time, others, part time. Many combine work andschool.Almost 50,000 persons enroll inChemeketa classes and workshops everyyear. Each term, about 5,000 students areenrolled full time.THE CHEMEKETA CREEDThe Chemeketa Creed is part of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Document which can be found on Pages 173and 174 of this catalog. The creed listsstandards of behavior expected of studentsas they become members of our educational community.1.0 PreambleChemeketa Community College provides an environment that celebratesthe freedom to learn and the freedomto teach. Each has dignity and value.FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND THE CHEMEKETA CAMPUSWith the opening of thenew Learning ResourceCenter (LRC) in April1999 and the new Technical Classroom Buildingfall term on the SalemCampus, users will see achange in the numberingof some buildings.As many visitors to theLRC have already discov-ered, it is called Building9. The new TechnicalClassroom Building isnumber 6 and the Scienceand Allied Heath classrooms and labs will nowbe Building 8.Students and visitors willalso notice remodelingprojects around the campus. Many offices will bemoving to the second floorof Building 2 when remodeling is complete in midOctober. These officesinclude: Student Records(Admissions) Registrar Financial Aid Business (Cashier)The new Technical Classroom Building (number 6) is connected toBuilding 5 and be sited just east of the building. The 38,000-squarefoot structure features 12 computer classrooms that seat 102 peopleeach, one open lab and a large, high-tech room that seats 463 andincludes a balcony.3
