INTRODUCING CHEMEKETA College transfer courses are for students who wish to continue their education at a four-year college or university.If you successfully completeChemeketa’s two-year college transferprogram, you may also earn an OregonAssociate of Arts transfer degree. We want to help you add tothe quality of your life.WHAT KINDS OF EDUCATIONDOES CHEMEKETA OFFER?Basically, Chemeketa has four areas ofstudy: Professional-technical education trainsstudents who want to qualify for workin specific fields. We offer more than 40professional-technical training programs. In some of these, you may earn aCertificate of Completion in one year.In most programs, you may earn anAssociate of Applied Science degree. Itusually takes two years to meet therequirements; it may take longer if youattend part time or don’t have the prerequisite skills.In addition to vocational classes, ourprofessional-technical programs includegeneral education courses. The aim ofthese courses is to help you becomemore competent in writing and mathematics and gain knowledge of humanities, communications, sciences, andsocial sciences. Lifelong learning is important atChemeketa. We encourage you to continue to learn throughout your life. Weoffer many credit and non-credit classes, workshops, and short courses.Chemeketa classes can help you toimprove your technical, vocational, avocational, and academic knowledge andskills; to retrain for new positions; andto continue your personal development. Developmental skill building classesare offered for people who want to learnbasic reading, writing, mathematics, andstudy skills; finish high school; or learnEnglish as a second language.Chemeketa schedules classes during theday, evenings, and on weekends.CHEMEKETA’S FACULTYChemeketa has over 245 full-time faculty members. In general, faculty whoteach college transfer courses have atleast a master’s degree; some have doctorates. Faculty in professional-technicalprograms generally have a rich background which combines education withpractical, on-the-job experience. Inaddition, we hire an average of 600adjunct faculty each year. Many of themteach evening classes on subjects directly related to their full-time jobs in thecommunity.1

HOW ARE WE SUPPORTED?As a public institution, most of the college’s financial support comes fromlocal property taxes, state school support funds, tuition, and fees.WHAT IS OUR HISTORY?Chemeketa’s roots began in 1955 whenthe local school district establishedSalem Technical Vocational School. Thecommunity college district was formedin September 1969.OUR CREDENTIALSThe Northwest Association of Schoolsand Colleges granted full accreditationto Chemeketa in December 1972. Inaddition, the Oregon Department ofEducation has approved all of our professional-technical programs and college transfer courses. Professional associations have also accredited those professional-technical programs whichrequire approval.For more information on accreditationand approvals, contact the office of theVice President of Academic Services inBuilding 5 on the Salem Campus at(503) 399-5144.WHERE IS CHEMEKETA?The Chemeketa Community Collegedistrict covers more than 2,600 squaremiles in Oregon’s Mid-WillametteValley. It includes Marion, Polk, mostof Yamhill, and part of Linn counties.We consider the entire college districtas our campus. Our 194-acre main campus is located at 4000 Lancaster DriveN.E., Salem. We have campuses inDallas, McMinnville, Sublimity, andWoodburn. We also schedule credit andnon-credit classes, workshops, seminars, and special programs in about 25communities throughout the college district. These classes meet during the day,evening, and on weekends in schools,businesses, churches, and homes.Our Training and EconomicDevelopment Center is located inLiberty Square, at 365 Ferry Street S.E.,in downtown Salem.WHAT KIND OF FACILITIESDOES CHEMEKETA HAVE?Chemeketa’s Salem Campus has 10major buildings and a number of smaller buildings. Building 2 housesCounseling Services, Tutoring ServicesCenter, Study Skills Center, and thePlanetarium.The Learning Resource Center is located in Building 9. It includes MediaServices, where you may access videosand other audio-visual materials, andthe Library, where you may accessbooks, journals and magazines. TheLearning Resource Center also includesa television studio, teleconferencingcapability, and facilities for audio,graphics and multimedia production.The Technology Classroom Buildinghas up-to-date computer labs and anauditorium. A variety of lectures andperformances are scheduled throughoutthe year in the auditorium.Our science and health building hasmodern, well-equipped laboratories forscience and health-related programs. Inthe physical education building areworkout and weight rooms, racquetballcourts, and a gymnasium. Our students are all agesand they have many different goals.Some people come to Chemeketa totrain or retrain for new careers or toupdate their professional-technicalskills; others return to school toincrease their knowledge, learn newskills, or to get to know more aboutthemselves and their relationships withother people.Some of our students attend full time,others, part time. Many combine workand school.About 50,000 people enroll inChemeketa classes and workshopsevery year.
