High School Students Earn College Creditthrough Dual EnrollmentTrident Technical College is well known for offering a highquality education to college students in the tricounty area. What many people may not realize is that Trident Tech offerseligible high school students a unique opportunity to get anearly start on their college career with dual enrollment.Dual enrollment allows high school students to earn collegecredit while still in high school. With the permission of their high school or home schoolassociation, qualified high school students attending schoolsin Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties are eligible toenroll in college-level courses at Trident Tech.Students earn one unit toward their high school diplomafor each three-credit hour college course they successfullycomplete.Since Trident Tech is a regionally accredited college, mostgeneral education dual credit courses transfer to collegesand universities across the nation. Even many of the appliedtechnical dual credit courses may transfer, depending on thecollege or university. The college has served high school students through dualenrollment programs for more than 20 years. Most recently, in fall 2019, a total of 2,360 high schoolstudents from 58 local high schools enrolled in college coursesat Trident Tech. These students were enrolled in a total of16,119 credit hours, averaging about 6.8 credit hours perstudent.their likelihood of future academic success.“National research suggests that students who receive collegecredit while still in high school are more likely to graduatefrom high school, are more likely to continue their educationafter high school, and have more success during their firstofficial year of college than their peers,” said Hook.Earning college credit while still in high school can potentiallydecrease the number of college semesters needed to earn anassociate or bachelor’s degree.“Another benefit to the student is that dual enrollmentprograms can significantly reduce the time and cost of collegebecause students enroll in college courses that will be appliedto their college transcripts,” said Hook. “They leave high schoolwith college credits, giving them greater flexibility as theyenter college after high school graduation. We’ve even hadstudents earn enough credits for an associate degree whileenrolled in high school.”For the most part, dual credit opportunities are limited tojunior and senior students. Students taking courses for dualcredit are responsible for the cost of their tuition and booksunless otherwise directed by their high school. Financial aid, including S.C. Lottery-Funded Tuition Assistance, is availablefor qualifying students. For more information about dual enrollment, includinghow to apply and what financial aid is available, please m or call843.574.6533.According to Tanisha Hook, dean of School and CommunityInitiatives at Trident Tech, dual enrollment benefits students ina couple of different ways.Students who are enrolled in the dual credit program increase3
