GREAT MEMORIESGREAT FUTURECelebrating 75 Years at The Neuro2009-2010 marked The Neuro’s 75th Anniversary. As we fast-forward into the future,we celebrate a history rich in innovation and discovery, uniting outstandingresearch and compassionate patient care. In 1934, Dr. Wilder Penfield charteda future where Montreal would give the world hope for conditions ranging frommigraines to stroke to Parkinson’s disease. As the first to map key functionalregions of the living brain, Dr. Penfield inspired creativity in all who came to TheNeuro to study the brain and care for patients with neurological and neurosurgicalconditions. Today, The Neuro’s clinicians, researchers and former fellows aroundthe world continue to break new ground. Seventy-five years of evolution havecreated an organization that is stronger than ever and stands as a modelfor institutions around the world.“It’s all about excellence in the tradition of research. This is truly oneof the institutes, if one looks at all of Canada’s health research fieldstogether, that is recognized world-wide for the quality of the scienceconducted here. The other aspect is that this science is completelyfocused on the brain—all aspects of the brain. From the molecule tofunctioning and thinking, in other words neuropsychology. As a result, the entire range of brain functions is under scrutiny. What is uniqueat the Neuro is the way this research is integrated with patient care. And the benefits are not only from laboratory to patient, but also frompatient to laboratory. In other words, the research findings are appliedto patient care and help improve the health of all Canadians.”–A lain BeaudetPresident, Canadian Institutes of Health ResearchCelebrating The Neuro’s 75th Anniversary celebrations (from left to right):CIHR President Dr. Alain Beaudet, McGill Dean of Medicine Dr. RichardLevin, MUHC CEO Dr. Arthur Porter, Neuro Director Dr. David Colman,Premier Jean Charest, McGill Principal Heather Munroe-Blum, OC andFormer Alcan CEO and Campaign Co-Chair for The Neuro’s ThinkingAhead campaign, Mr. Jacques Bougie, OC.“When travelling abroad, I meetpeople who talk to me about theNeuro. Not everyone at home realizes that the Neuro is a one of theworld’s top institutions. In fact,it is one reason why Montreal isrecognized globally as a life sciencesresearch centre. And that inspiresus; it drives us in our universityhospital initiatives, because wewant to maintain Quebec’s position, and the Neuro is at the very foundation of this desire and of thisrecognition for Quebec.”Heather Hiscox (right), host of CBC News: Morning and memberof the Neuro’s Advisory Board, speaks with Dr. Brenda Milner.–J ean CharestPremier of Quebec1

Message from thedirectorA JEWEL IN THE CROWNWe are in the midst of aprosperous and productiveperiod with many excitingdevelopments marked byan outstanding externalreview, the remarkableDavid R. Colman, PhDsuccess of our capitalIn the view of the reviewers, research atcampaign and the festiveThe Neuro keeps our clinical efforts atcelebration of The Neuro’sthe cutting edge, and our clinical efforts75th anniversary. “A jewel infocus and augment our science. TheseMcGill’s crown” concludedare indeed gratifying words for thosea panel of external expertwho value the unique integration ofevaluators in the five-yearresearch and clinical neuroscience thathas characterized The Neuro since itsreview mandated by McGillfounding, and I am proud to announceUniversity.that after 75 years, The Neuro is still atthe very top in terms of global reputation. In my view, our international stature isachieved, like our research and clinicaloutcomes, through the dedication anddrive of every scientist, clinician, nurse, allied health professional, student, staffmember and volunteer who commits toThe Neuro mission. It is to them that Iextend my thanks and congratulationsfor our ongoing accomplishments.2As our first good news, the CapitalCampaign, under the volunteer leadership of Jacques Bougie and DominicD’Alessandro, has passed the 38 millionmark with significant gifts toward theNorth Wing from the J.W. McConnellFamily Foundation, the MolsonFoundation, the Cyril & Dorothy andJoel & Jill Reitman Foundation, theEstate of John Gordon, Mr. and Mrs.Paul G. Desmarais, Hugh Hallward,Manulife Financial, Power Corporation, the Fondation Jeunesse-Vie and CGI,and campaign co-chairs, Jacques Bougieand Dominic D’Alessandro. TheNeuro-Engineering Program receivedfounding support from Rio TintoAlcan and the Molson Foundation.New fellowships were establishedthanks to support from National BankFinancial Group, CIBC, Brian Levittand Claire Gohier, Dr. Brenda Milner, and Dr. Shirley Ferguson Rayport. In addition, generous gifts in support

of cutting-edge clinical care and innovative research programs were receivedfrom BMO Financial Group, RBC,Carolyn and Richard Renaud, RoastersFoundation, Scotiabank, The TenaquipFoundation and the Reed Family, andthe R. Howard Webster Foundation. We achieved a new milestone in 2009when The Neuro Annual Fund ledby volunteers Lorena Cook and LeighTaylor generated over 1 million, including 100,000 from our Facultyand Staff Campaign. Key volunteersWarren and Joan Chippindale formalized a planned giving initiative withFrançois Perreten and Marie Carriganto facilitate bequests that representabout 16% of the gifts to The Neuroyear after year. With the help of JacquesBougie and Luc Beauregard, we receivedcontributions of free media space andadvertising time worth over 2.4 millionto make our spectacular national public awareness campaign possible. Thisstrong support for The Neuro, even ina challenging economic environment, affirms the value of our integrated clinicaland research mission, and speaks to theimpact we have on our patients, friends, staff and the community at large. Withtwo years remaining in our capital campaign, we continue to implement ourplans for new programs and new discoveries at The Neuro.Last year, for our 75th anniversarycele bration, Quebec Premier JeanCharest opened our internationalsymposium that featured NobelLaureates and other award-winningneuroscientists.We hosted a spectacular open houseand our first ever gala, and these eventsbrought us closer to our former Fellowswho trained at The Neuro before establishing prestigious careers around theworld. As part of our commitment tomaintain The Neuro tradition offacilitating training and developmentin neuroscience worldwide, we haveexpanded our efforts by hosting cliniciansfrom Cuba and Honduras, and studentsfrom Barbados, China and India, anddispatching neuroscientists to Chileand Brazil.Funds from our Centre of Excellence inCommercialization and Research awardsupported 40 scientific projects andallowed us to create 18 new fellowshipsand studentships. And, to further realizethe translational value of our research,we created a commercialization committee staffed by leaders from industryand McGill University. The Neuro is a central component ofthe expanded neuroscience program atMcGill, where neuroscience is a strategic priority. The Neuro now housesthe office of the new McGill IntegratedProgram in Neuroscience (IPN), amulti-disciplinary, multi-site graduateprogram, which increases the visibilityof neuroscience at McGill and enhancesour ability to recruit the best studentsfrom around the world. In keeping withthe growth of neuroscience, Neuro facultymembers have graduated to senior positions across campus and across Canada.Alain Beaudet, former Professor atThe Neuro and past President of theFonds de la recherche en santé duQuébec (FRSQ), was named Presidentof the Canadian Institutes of HealthResearch (CIHR). Neuro faculty whoare pursuing their research programswhile assuming new responsibilities atMcGill are Professor Heather Durhamas Associate Dean of Graduate andPostdoctoral Studies; Lesley Fellowsand Alyson Fournier as Co-Directorsof the Faculty of Medicine MD/PhDprogram; Josephine Nalbantoglu andDavid Ragsdale co-direct the IPN;Eugene Bereza, Director of the Neuro’s3Ethics Committee, has been namedDirector of the McGill Bioethics Unit;and, at the McGill University HealthCentre, Alain Ptito is Psychologist-inChief and Patricia O’Connor is nowDirector of Nursing & Chief NursingOfficer at the MUHC.To maintain the momentum of growth,we welcomed new faculty members,Andrew Reader, an expert in imagereconstruction and modeling in highresolution positron emission tomography (PET); Eliane Kobayashi, an expertin epilepsy; and radiopharmaceuticalchemist Esther Schirrmacher, who alsojoined the PET research team in theMcConnell Brain Imaging Centre.
