Page 3PentecostPentecost isn’t a feastthat began when thetonguesoffireappeared and the soundFr. Jude Siciliano, OPof strong driving windfilled the room where Jesus’ disciples were gathered.Rather, Pentecost was first a feast of the Jewish people. Itcelebrated fifty days after the Passover, and was called theFeast of Unleavened Bread, or the Feast of Weeks. At first itwas an agricultural feast, a celebration of the wheat harvest.Pentecost’s significance in the Jewish community expandedto include the remembrance of God’s giving the law onSinai. Thus, it was a celebration of the new covenantedcommunity formed by God during the trials in the desert. This all-too-quick review of the origins of Pentecost is notmeant to be a history lesson. But as we reflect on its origins,we can see how "loaded" with meaning and imagery thisfeast is for Christians. The originalfeast was connected to Passover and sofor us, Pentecost is linked to Jesus’suffering, death and exaltation at God’sright hand. It is also a harvest feastbecause the disciples, gathered toreceive the Spirit, were the "harvest" ofJesus’ labors and we too are the fruitsof his work.FAITH BOOKPENTECOSTMay 31, 2020Acts 2: 1-11; Ps. 104;Romans 8: 8-17; John 20: 19-23From today’s Acts of the Apostles reading:And they were filled with the Holy Spiritand began to speak in different tonguesas the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.Reflection:Jesus is no longer physically present with us, but hehas not withdrawn to some distant mountain in thecosmos, waiting for his time to return. The scripturestoday remind us that Jesus is fully with us because hisSpirit dwells in us – as individuals and as a churchcommunity. Empowered by the Spirit we "proclaim"our faith in Christ by our words and actions. So we ask ourselves: How is my faith affected by the presence of theHoly Spirit in my life? With the Holy Spirit, how can I be a more publicwitness to my faith?Opportunities to Help & Volunteer“When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.”( Mt. 25)Our pantry is in need of non-perishable itemssuch as: cereals, peanut butter, jelly, cannedvegetables, fruits, and soups, tuna fish, crackers, non-refrigerated milk (ex. Page 4Dear Parishioners,Happy Pentecost! The Birthday of the Church! This day allows us to recognize thegifts of the Holy Spirit which has been given to every Baptized Christian and all thosewho have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. This day also reminds us that theHoly Spirit descended upon the Apostles and had been gradually handed over to the people of God.I would like to ask each of you to please take some time to pray and recognize the gifts of the Holy Spirit and acton them accordingly. Let us be grateful and appreciative of these gifts. We are reminded that the church is made of “living stones” and we are called to be builders of the kingdom ofGod. I am grateful to so many in our parish who share their gifts to build up this community. The COVID-19 pandemic has created many major disruptions which have included the closing of houses ofworship and the cancellation of religious gatherings. On Tuesday, May 26, 2020, Immaculate Heart of MaryChurch re-opened under the directives and guidelines of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queen for private andpersonal prayers. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church is opened Monday through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to2:00 p.m. The reopening guidelines mandate that a maximum of ten people are allowed to pray in the Church. We appreciate your patience and cooperation if you need to wait to enter the Church for prayer time.I am continuing to pray for all of you, our brave first responders and essential workers during my personal dailyMass and prayer. I ask that you too continue to keep our first responders and essential workers in your prayers. These men and women are truly, “Heroes” as they put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe during thepandemic. Please continue to be kind and helpful to each other, and look in on our elderly neighbors. Let us also continueto pray for healing, strength and courage as we continue to serve God’s people during this difficult time and tobring a quick end to this present crisis. We do notknow what therestrictions will be inOctober and at this time we think it is inthe best interest of our parishioners andfriends who would be attending tocancel.Justice NotesThere are different kinds of spiritual gifts. . .there aredifferent forms of service. . .there are different workings. .To each individual, manifestation of the Spirit is given forsome benefit.--1 Corinthians 12:4-7Difference is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Think about thatfor a moment. Are you comfortable with people who aredifferent than you? When you meet someone who isdifferent from you, do you take the time to hear andunderstand them?We live in a society that often promotes uniformity overdiversity, even though America is probably the mostdiverse country in the world. Pope Francis states, "Weneed to communicate with each other, to discover thegifts of each person, to promote that which unites us, andto regard our differences as an opportunity to grow inmutual respect. Patience and trust are called for in suchdialogue, permitting individuals, families andcommunities to hand on the values of their own cultureand welcome the good which comes from others’experiences" (6/6/15). Imagine, if you will, creating aworld where each person could fully develop the giftsgiven to them by the Holy Spirit. What would be the necessary components of such aworld? It may seem like the list would be endless but we,Catholics, have a good tool in our hands to use. The"tool" is the social teachings of the Church. Theseteachings are the fertile soil where each unique anddifferent human being can flower. We begin with the lifeand dignity of the human person; we call our society tofamily, community, and participation; we recognize thathuman rights should be protected and that we have dutiesand responsibilities to one another, to our families, and tothe larger society; we recognize that as a society we areonly as strong as our weakest link and that our basicmoral test is how our most vulnerable members arefaring; we are taught the economy must serve people, notthe other way around; that people have the right toproductive work, to decent and fair wages, to joiningunions, to private property, and to economic initiative;that loving our neighbor has a global dimension wherewe stand together in so
