St. Peter’s Reformed ChurchJanuary2019320 E. Grandview AvenueThe Joyful NoiseletterA PUBLICATION OF ST. PETER’S REFORMED CHURCHZelienople, PA 16063(724) 452-8120stpzelie.orgA New Year ofHappiness and Joy!Happy New Year St. Peter’s Have you wished someone Happy New Year lately? Happy New Year is anoften-heard, post-Christmas statement of encouragement and well-wishing. To besure, everyone desires a happy new year but how does a person actuallyexperience a happy new year? What is the key to having 2019 really be a happy onefor you? Many people equate happiness with money and materialism. To them, happiness is hitting the lottery and being financially set. Others equate happinesswith good physical health. To them, happiness is an in-shape body hitting on alleight cylinders. Still, others equate happiness with personal achievement. To them, happiness is a big promotion, or graduation, or reaching a milestone.Years ago, I read a true story about tennis star, Boris Becker. He was theyoungest man to ever win Wimbledon, achieving victory in 1985 at the tender ageof seventeen. In the late 1980s, Becker was on the mountain top of fame, fortune, and personal achievement. Yet, he was so unhappy and on the brink of suicide.Becker was quoted as saying, “I had won Wimbledon as the youngest player. I wasrich. I had all the material possessions I needed. It’s the old song of movie starsand pop stars who commit suicide. They have everything, and yet they are sounhappy. I had no inner peace. I was a puppet on a string.”Isn’t that scary and sad? Becker had all the things the world says will makefor happiness, yet he was so incredibly unhappy. Could it be that true happiness isnot found in health, wealth, and achievement? The Bible makes it clear that true happiness comes when you and I areright with God. When we are yielded to Christ and His will for us, then we canexperience true happiness—inner peace and unspeakable joy. Are you right withGod today? Are your sins confessed to Him? Are you living surrendered to the Lordshipof Jesus Christ?

Blaise Pascal, the seventeenth century philosopher astutely said, “There is a God-shaped vacuum inthe heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made knownthrough Jesus.” Let me encourage you to take sober inventory of your life today. Are you trying to fill the innervacuum with health, wealth, achievement, or the like? Those things will never make you truly happy or satisfythe deep longings of your soul. The only One who can do that is Jesus.Start your year off right by bowing your knee and your life to King Jesus. Give Him first place ineverything and experience a year of happiness and joy!Because of King Jesus,Pastor JimHappy New Year 2019Family Dinner & Movie NightSpecial delivery for comedy fans!Greg Kinnear stars in this spirit-lifter about a money-scamming conartist who goes from no-good to doing good. The con artists transformationbegins when a judge gives him a choice of work or prison. He chooses work,of course and is assigned to a post office’s DEAD LETTER OFFICE.There, he begins a con of divine proportions. By responding to lettersaddressed to God with a few “miracles”, he’s in the right place to pocket anyofferings mailed back. But an unexpected miracle takes place when the citystarts cheering on the “God Squad”! Come watch as God works in ‘wonder’filled ways!Friday, January 4, 20196:00 PM Dinner in Fellowship Room6:30 PM Movie in SanctuaryBRING A FRIEND!

Volunteer Ministry NewsFrom the pen of PamSPOTLIGHT ON: Salvation Army Bell Ringers, 'We Care' and Caps for KidsThanks to everyone who represented St. Peter's in the Salvation Army kettle campaign by ringingthe bell at the Northgate Plaza Bi-Lo on November 30 and at the Zelienople Walgreen's onDecember 8. Those who joined me in ringing include: Pastor Jim and Lucas, Sandy Bernd, KarenCunningham, Sally Hamilton, Thelma Jacobs, Gary Knauff, Kate and Eric Konyak, Betty Kraynik,Sheri McMaster, Lynn and Rick Meyers, Susie Rape and her great-granddaughter, Tonya Reynolds,Sidney Schiever, John Schulte, and Lexi, Deb, and Jim Smith. It was great for our church tocontinue on in taking part in such a worthy community endeavor (even when the weather was verycold and windy). Rhonda Eppinger and Sue Collins (the new coordinators) really appreciated ourefforts!!Our Christmas 'We Care' visits occurred on December 11 and 12 and were centered on 'Jesus isthe reason for the season', a truth that our shut-in and elderly members know better than manypeople! Those who were visited include: Frances Baillie, Annabelle Davey, Jane Gilchrist, Carolineand Earl Gilliland, Dee Graham, Flo Gross, Dorothy Knauf, Evelyn Lutz, Boots McMaster, ShirleyMcWithey, Leroy Meeder, Linda Rape, Donna Rice, Harvey Rice, Pat Rice, Dan Skelley and MillieWaybright, Mary Jean and Frank Szakelyhidi, Ruth and Dale Thomas, and Bob Yohn. The faithfulvisitors who helped Sally Hamilton out are as follows: Bea and Al Barna, Harold Herr, ThelmaJacobs, Debbie Kirsch, Sandy Lee, Frank Luek, Sharon McCormick, Jess McGuinness, LynnMeyers, Pam North, Kay O'Neill, Dottie and John Schulte, Ginni Smoke and Judy Williams. Therecan be lots of great things that happen when our shut-in and elderly folks are visited, and here isjust one little gem to share: if anyone ever goes to see Flo Gross, you will undoubtedly find her witha beautiful shawl wrapped around her. Flo doesn't keep this shawl around her shoulders simplybecause she is cold - she has it near to her because she knows it is a prayer shawl from her St.Peter's family and for the years that she has had this gift, she has kept it very close to her as itsymbolizes the trust she has in the faithfulness of her church family to keep praying for her. It isheartwarming to know how much this shawl has meant and continues to mean to this very speciallady (and there are many other people who have received the shawls and have valued them, also).Bea Barna has been the person who has made our prayer shawls, and we thank her for makingcountless numbers of them so that we could give them to people as a tangible reminder of ourprayers for them (prayer shawls have also been given to people in the hospital or those recoveringat home, or those who are going through a rough time who have needed to know that our churchfamily is lifting them up in prayer.) We are currently looking for someone who might be interested insupplying us with more shawls so that we can continue this aspect of our outreach to those whoneed to be reminded of God's love for them. If you crochet or knit and you would like to help out, please contact me in the church office (724-452-8120). And if you'd like to become involved in 'WeCare,' please contact Sally Hamilton (724-822-4530).For a number of years, Ruth Gross has led a dedicated group of women in knitting and crochetingitems for the 'Caps for Kids' organization. This past year our St. Peter's group of 10 women endedup making a total of 266 hats, scarves, and mittens. It is evident that all of the items have beenmade with love for children who these faithful knitters and crocheters don't know, but the ladies havewanted to share God's love with the kids in the form of these beautifully handcrafted items that willfunction to keep them warm. In addition to Ruth herself, the women who were involved in the 2018outreach include: Theresa Eller, Sally Hamilton, Amanda Heilman, Brooke Kaelin, SharonMcCormick, Sue Rectenwald, Pat Rice, Janet Zeigler, and Janet's Florida friend Kay Kline. Thisyear Brooke Kaelin and Sue Rectenwald were the top producers of the various items.

continued Volunteer Ministry News'Caps for Kids' was very sad to lose two special members this past year. Both Nancy Miller andSaraellen Weyman had been very involved in the ministry for a number of years and they will bedearly missed. In closing, Ruth and the rest of the group would welcome anyone else who wouldcare to join them in this valuable ministry (and some of them have already begun their work for2019!) If you have any questions or would like patterns or yarn, please see Ruth at church orcontact her at home (724-452-9548).It was Charles Dickens who penned this quote: "I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep itall the year." How different the world would be if we who are Christians (and who know the truth ofwhat Christmas is really about) could truly live this out in all the days, not only of this new year, butall the years that follow. I know that with the Lord's help, I can do what Dickens was striving to dothose many years ago - and you can, too! Blessed New Year to my St. Peter's family!Thank You NotesDear St. Peter’s,It is with humble and grateful hearts we write this letter ofthanks to St. Peter’s. LIBRARY HIGHLIGHTS FOR JANUARY - READ ALL ABOUT IT!!A brand new year of reading possibilities is upon us, and listed below are some great new additions to ourchurch library, both fiction and non-fiction.Heading the list are some additional books in the best-selling 'Great Lives from God's Word' series written bypastor, educator, and author Charles Swindoll. To give some background on this beloved man whosespeaking and writing ministries have meant so much to so many, not only has Pastor Swindoll served atnumerous churches during his career, he is also the founder of the radio program 'Insight for Living'. In 1994he became the president of Dallas Theological Seminary and now serves as its chancellor. He has writtenmore than 70 books (and in addition to this series that I am writing about, we have more than 30 of Swindoll'sbooks in our church library) - through all that this man has done, he has touched many lives and has beenused mightily by God. What Charles Swindoll does in the 'Great Lives from God's Word' series is to examinethe lives of various Old and New Testament characters, and he does so in a very engaging and easy-to-readfashion. The volumes that we already had from the collection are: "Job", "Elijah", "Jesus", and "Paul". Addingto the series now are these volumes: "Joseph", "Esther", and a compilation of lesser-known Old Testamentcharacters titled "Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Lives". If you decide to read one of these fascinatingcharacter studies, you will probably want to read them all!Another great read to preview this month is from another beloved Charles, Dr. Charles Stanley, who hasbeen the senior pastor of the First Baptist Church in Atlanta and founded the 'In Touch' radio and televisionministry, which is known to people all over the world. Just like Charles Swindoll, we have a number of Dr.Stanley's books in our library, and this book now added is titled "Standing Strong - How to Storm-ProofYour Life With God's Timeless Truths". The blurb from the book jacket will truly pique your interestas it states: 'When the hurricane winds of adversity strike suddenly and relentlessly, when you are blindsidedby forces that knock you off your feet and leave you stunned and bewildered.will your anchor hold? Will youweather the storm? This powerful book from Dr. Charles Stanley outlines the most foundational and essentialtruths about God and His Word - and reminds us that what we believe about these big issues will make orbreak who we are and how we live. "Standing Strong" is the product of Dr. Stanley's lifelong journey ofdefining his convictions, based on God's Word, and choosing to stand by what he believes.no matter theconsequences. By sharing the hard-won wisdom he has gleaned through a lifetime of faith, he guides us aswe examine and shape what we believe, so that we can live strong with confidence, hope, and an assurancethat when our convictions are based on God's truths, we can weather any storm as we hold tight to him.' Thisbook's content and insights could provide you with a meaningful way in which to begin the new year!Rounding out this month's reading possibilities is the newest book in the fiction series 'Montana Rescue'written by best-selling author Susan May Warren. The title of this fifth novel is: "Storm Front" - here is thesynopsis from the back of the book: 'A tornado has destroyed a small Minnesota community, and among themissing are not only a group of students but also PEAK Rescue team leader Chet King. Ty Remington willstop at nothing to rescue his mentor, not even when the girl he loved - and lost - walks back into his life. ButBrette needs his help more than he knows, despite her stubborn determination to push him away. And whenhe gets a second chance, loving her just might cost him more than he can imagine. A blogger for VortexStorm Chasers, Brette Arnold didn't expect her adventures to land her in the same place as Ty, the guy whoshe walked - actually, ran - from over a year ago. She had her reasons - good ones. The kind that tell her thatfalling for him again would only lead to heartache. But Ty isn't the kind of man to give up - not on the missingstudents or her.' Just as the first four books in the series did, it sounds like this is one will also keep you onthe edge of your seat!So there you have it - there's something for everyone in the library as webegin 2019 - come 'check out' the many, many choices that are availableand I believe you will not be disappointed! Happy winter reading!

Sunday School NewsHappy New Year! What an exciting month December was for the Christian Ed. Department. The children’s Christmas partywas a hit with 48 attending. The children sang and rang bells during our worship service on 12/9. What ablessing that was having the little ones front and center during the worship service. The book club breakfastwas wonderful. We had new faces participating and new friendships formed all over a book. Look foranother book club set up for Jan/Feb. The Sunday School classes collected items for ‘The Net’ ministry inButler the month of December. We had a trunk load of donations for the least, lost and lonely of Butler.Thank you for all that donated.I am looking forward to 2019 and bringing even more excitement and new ideas to St. Peter’s. With a newyear, make a new commitment to attend a Sunday school class. Many different styles of teaching isavailable to meet everyone’s needs to not only grow spiritually, but grow in fellowship.Serving HIM together,HeatherDear St. Peter’s,By the time you get this we will already be in Uganda. We were so blessed by the support and manydonations that we have received for this year’s trip. It has been so exciting to see how much more we havegrown in this mission of our church. As you might have heard we are going to be starting construction of achurch in the area of Pele. The reason I say area is because the church is being built in a central location ofthree villages. This way it will be accessible to many people. The church will be called St. Peter's Uganda. Inthe same area we will be building a latrine and a well is already being drilled as I write this. We have alsohired a medical team to assist in caring for the well-being of the children in the area. This was made possiblethrough the communion offering donation from August. CPR and North Star Helping Hands Foundation havegenerously provided the funds for the building materials for the church and we have two sewing machinesand material to help the sewing school in Hoima. These are just a few of the big projects we have going onplus there are many others that are being funded from our general funds. Here is our tentative schedule forthe days we are there:Dec 29: Joseph village and Men’s Bible study at orphanageDec 30: Joseph church followed with prison visit; Pastor Will and Randy preachDec 31: Bulindi, a small village with veterinarian needsJan 1: School celebration Christmas and New Year’s feast for the childrenJan 2: Kamugembe II Medical helpJan 3: Joseph village, another small village with medical and farming needsJan 4/5: Break day / tourJan 6: Kikorobya where Pastor Will and Randy will preachJan 7/8: PeleJan 9 -12: Your villages and coffee farmAs you can see, we will be quite busy. All of this could not have happened without all of you. We now needyour support through prayer! Please look at the schedule and pray for each day that we can continue to doGod's work! We love you all and look forward to telling you about our trip when we return. If you would like tohave daily reports through email send an email saying YES to rherbe@stpzelie.org and I will add them assoon as I get them.Your servants in Christ,The Uganda Mission Trip Team

happiness is a big promotion, or graduation, or reaching a milestone. Years ago, I read a true story about tennis star, Boris Becker. He was the youngest man to ever win Wimbledon, achieving victory in 1985 at the tender age of seventeen. In the late 1980s, Becker was on the mountain top of fame, fortune, and personal achievement.
