TextileExchange is runningawebinaron Creating Material Change – The State of theSector in 2020 on June 9th at 10:00 – 11:00EDT. This webinar will provide a snapshot of thelatest insights on fibre and material sourcing in thetextiles sector, drawing on the 2020 MaterialChange Index and Insights. Jointhelaunchwebinarforthe InTexproject on 15th June at 11:00 CEST. InTex is athree-year project led by UNEP and funded by theEuropean Union (EU) to promote sustainablebusiness practices and economic models in thetextile value chain. The InTex project has fivecomponents: two components with a global reach,and three components that focus on nationalimplementation in three countries in Africa: Kenya,SouthAfrica,andTunisia.Thenationalcomponents aim to increase the uptake of ecoinnovation and use of Product ncorporating a strong component on LCA datageneration. makers and industry executives to explore howBangladesh can become a leader in circularfashion - follow this link to register.Circle Economy have released a report couplingthe research conducted by Circle Economyand HIVA for the Putting Circular Textiles toWork project. This research has been conductedto support the Dutch clothing industry in ensuringa just transition to a circular economy. Theresearch finds that prioritising reuse and repairstrategies could create 24,286 new full-timeequivalents (FTEs) in repair and maintenance and4,611 FTEs in second-hand sales, as well as shift17,319FTEsfromfirst-tosecond-handsales. At an informal virtual policy dialogue held on19th May and hosted by the United NationsEconomic Commission for Europe (UNECE),members of the UN Alliance for SustainableFashion andstakeholdersofthe Moldovanfashion industry came together to discuss thepotential of this sector to contribute to thecountry’s implementation of the 2030 Agenda forSustainableDevelopment.Thediscussionfocused on challenges currently facing the fashionand textiles sector in Moldova with regardto becomingmoresustainable; representatives fromUNEP,theInternational Trade Centre, the UN Conference onTrade and Development, the International LabourOrganization and the UN Industrial es, consideringtogethertotacklealso recenttooffertheseCOVID-19impacts. UNECE recently launched ‘The SustainabilityPledge’ formeasurableandverifiablesustainability in the garment and footwear sector,as a Call to Action for greater Traceability andTransparency in the sector. In addition to thePledge, a toolkit of policy recommendations,guidelines and standards endorsed by UNECEmember States has been put together to providetraceability and transparency solutions for trackingany garment or item of footwear from footwearofinvitespurchase. Thegovernments,manufacturers,andindustry stakeholders to pledge to apply this toolkitof measures and take a positive step als of the sector. You may be interested in joining the workshop onsustainableconsumptionandcircularbusiness models in the textile sector, to be runby the EU Commission on June 15th at 9.00 13.00 CEST. This will be the third in a series oftargeted stakeholder workshops to gather input onchallenges and gaps as well as opportunities forthe sector towards sustainability. The workshopaims to identify barriers and solutions, includingpolicy measures, to promote consumption withhigher value retention and lower n needs of consumers in relation . Moreover, the workshop strives toidentifyrecommendationsforpromoting,enforcing, reporting, monitoring and training inrelationtoGreenPublicProcurement.Toparticipate, preregister via this link by June 4th.

The EU Commission is also running a publicconsultation ontheEUstrategyforsustainable textiles. Input is welcome fromactors along the textile value chain, as well aspublic authorities, citizens, consumers and socialpartners, investors and research, innovation andtraining centres. The European Green Deal andthe Circular Economy Action Plan, as well as the2020 Industrial Strategy, all identified the textilesector as a priority sector where the potential forcircularity is high and therefore key for thetransition towards a more sustainable and circulareconomy. This initiative aims to help the EU shiftto a climate-neutral, circular economy whereproducts are designed to be more durable,reusable, repairable and recyclable.
