How Choosing LifeChanges Lives“Llegué alcentro súperpreocupado yconfundida.”—“Icame to thecenter superworried andconfused,” sherecalls over thephone. “Perocuando dejé elcentro el pesoque sentía sehabía ido.”—“Butwhen I left the center, the weight I felt was lifted.”Norma Gueta was thirty-two years old, mother ofthree, and pregnant with her fourth child as shedrove herself to the abortion clinic about a yearago. Along the route from Arvin to Bakersfield,Norma prayed that God would send her a sign. She felt such a heavy weight as she contemplatedwhat she should do about her unplannedpregnancy.Norma’s father, with whom she was living at thetime, had threatened to take her children awayfrom her if she became pregnant again. “I didn’twant to have an abortion, but the fear of tellingmy parents that I was pregnant and losing myother children made me feel like I had no otherchoice. I prayed for God to show me what todo.” When a woman from Lifesavers, a sidewalkcounseling ministry, stopped her outside of theabortion clinic, Norma knew that God had senther the sign she needed. That sign from God is what led Norma to visit theBakersfield Pregnancy Center, where she met withbilingual counselor, Patricia Santillan. “Cuandoplatique con la consejera mi sentí tranquila y conesperanza.” —“When talking with my counselor,I felt calm and hopeful.” Patricia encouragedNorma to receive an ultrasound, so that she couldvisualize and experience the little life growinginside of her.During the ultrasound, Nurse Manager TeddieScott noticed that Norma smiled and laughed asshe watched the baby turn. “She was surprised bythe child’s development,”remarked Teddie. As shewatched the tiny flicker of her baby’s heartbeat,Norma was able to connect more deeply with herunborn baby. A wave of clarity and reassuranceswept over the expectant mother, and sheknew exactly what decision she neededto make. She remembers, “The ultrasoundconfirmed to me that I wanted to make thedecision to keep my baby.”As Patricia and Norma kept in contact overthe next several months, Norma was able totell her parents about her pregnancy. She alsoreturned to the center where she receivedmaternity clothes, baby items, and even abible. On September 9th, 2013, Norma gavebirth to her healthy and beautiful baby girl.Norma says that she wants others to knowabout the love and care she received at theBakersfield Pregnancy Center. Her story is notunlike many others belonging to women whoenter our doors every single day. Thoughts like“abortion is my only option” and “my life isover” plague the hearts of these women andtheir families as they struggle to find a solutionin their crisis. Our center exists so that we mightbring Light in the face of these struggles, andshed Truth on these fears and lies.We celebrate and give thanks to God forvictorious stories, such as Norma’s. As anagency working under the direction of theOne who chose to give us life, the BakersfieldPregnancy Center aims to extend Christ’sheart of unconditional love, grace, and hopeto our clients, so that they might choose life fortheir unborn children.

DLetterfrom theirectorAs I begin my ninth year as Executive Director of the Bakersfield PregnancyCenter, I am in awe of the vision God has set before us!The passion of the BPC ministry team is to see lives saved and changed by“speaking [and demonstrating] the truth, in love” (Ephesians 4:15). We arefilled with thanksgiving to God by stories like the one told at our recentbanquet by Chiffawn, one of our newest pregnancy services volunteers. While still a teenager, Chiffawn found herself with an unplannedpregnancy. Unaware of the assistance and care she might have receivedat a pregnancy resource center like ours, Chiffawn chose abortion. Formany years, Chiffawn lived with the pain and regret that often accompanythat decision, until she learned about the Embraced abortion recoveryprogram.Through an Embracedclass offered at her church,Chiffawn found healing, courage and deeperrelationship with God. Now,she has heard God’s call tominister to others facingdifficult pregnancy situations. Her hope is to help themavoid the pain, and lossof a child’s life, that sheexperienced. What Satanmeant for evil and destruction, God has redeemed!Chiffawn’s testimony is a reminder to me that God is in the businessof doing life-saving miracles! If we are obedient to him with our time, talents and financial resources, he will give us the privilege of taking partin the miracle-working business. Your partnership with the BakersfieldPregnancy Center means that you, too, are a miracle worker.I hope you have caught the vision God has given the BPC ministry team, the vision of a community where no woman chooses abortion, becauseshe knows and takes advantage of the life-saving alternatives the centermakes available to her. This vision is contagious, so I hope you will spreadit to others who love God, and love the life-in-its-fullness that he offers toall who draw near to him through Jesus Christ.God bless you!Linda DavisExecutive DirectorSweet baby Steven (the third) is the son of one ofour clients, Cheyenne. Cheyenne enjoys stoppingby the center to visit with staff and volunteers. From Those We Serve“The counselor made me feel verycomfortable and loved by God. I feelvery proud to have this facility helpingme with my pregnancy.” -N.W. clientof staff member, Patricia.“The women were accepting, kind, caring, and understanding. I reallylike the spiritual backing I recieved, like being offered to be put in prayers.I hardly had to wait at all. Everythingran smooth and efficient.” - A.D., clientof volunteer counselor, Delynn.“As a JuvenileCourtJudge whopresided overthousandsof caseswhere ChildProtectiveServices hadremoved children from unsafe homes,it is apparent to me that the idea of‘throw-away children’ does not end inthe womb. We must combat that ideafrom conception to the end of life. Ihave seen the Bakersfield PregnancyCenter affect women and men byshowing them there is a God-centeredmeaning to their decision to keep andnurture their child right from the start. That decision can only result in seeingtheir child as a gift - a gift that willcontinue to be cherished as they growolder.” - Jon Stuebbe, retired SuperiorCourt Judge

It’s About Faith and TrustMeeting the Center’s StrategicGoals Through God’s ProvisionIn 2010, the Board of Directors of the BakersfieldPregnancy Center adopted the First Choice Initiative, afive year strategic plan to guide the center into the seconddecade of the 21st Century. The initiative included thegoal of making the BPC the first choice of women facingunplannedpregnancies. In thepreviousdecade, theBakersfieldPregnancyCenter hadgrown andadapted insignificantways to thechangingneeds of women in Kern County. In 2008, toaccommodate expanding programs and increasingclient numbers, the center moved to its present location, increasing square footage by 35 percent. Since then, ahigher volume of ultrasound patients, expanded griefrecovery programs and the addition of more servicesin Spanish have required us to become more and moreefficient in the use of the wonderful facility God hasprovided. In addition, careful use of Internet technologyhas helped the center reach and minister to those in need, beyond the walls of our clinic building.God has brought an incredibly gifted team of professionalstaff, volunteers and board members to the center.Along with them have come stronger ties to churches, community agencies, schools and the businesscommunity. Financial support to meet the needs broughtthrough our doors has been faithfully supplied. The numbers reported in the right column show theresults of progress made under the First Choice Initiative.Client numbers overall have increased 22% since 2010,and the number of ultrasounds performed on womenconsidering abortions is up 210%. In 2010, 92 of thosewomen chose life for their babies instead of abortion. In2013, 208 young lives were saved! In light of the gains made in recent years, the BPC ministryteam has updated its goal to embrace God’s vision morefully: We want to help create a community where nowoman chooses abortion as the solution to an unplannedpregnancy, because the needs of mothers, fathers andbabies are met in dignified, life-affirming ways. Our Vision for the FutureDuring 2014, the Earn While You Learn program, and agrowing staff of male counselors, will enable the centerto support and educate more men who are involved inpregnancy and parenting decisions. Longer hours, morenurses on sight and more resources for Spanish-speakingclients will also increase our capacity to reach those inneed of life-affirming care and support.Strategically designed billboards, radio, and television ads,new to the BPC’s outreach strategy in 2013, will continueto be utilized for maximum impact. Secretary of theBoard of Directors, Sheila Moore says, “We want potentialclients and their support people to know who we are andwhere we are, so that when the time comes, they will looktowards the BPC first!”Whatever God has in store through 2014 and beyond, the BPC will rise to the challenge. We are partners in hislife-saving mission. The future is as bright as the promisesof God, and his promises can take us beyond any goals weset, into a place where faith and hope become reality!1,863 clients visited the center in 2013703 discussed spiritual issues with their counselor573 ultrasounds were performed960 pregnancy tests were given760 of those tests were positiveIn 2013, more than 75% ofabortion-vulnerable clients choseto parent their child after viewingan ultrasound. That is 208 younglives saved.
