WANT TO KNOW WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TOO?HERE’S A RECAP OF OUR RECENT ACTIVITIES AND ONLINE EVENTS!Why are Taxes so TAXING?!Cassandra Griffin, CPCC, DTMAugust 27, 2020If you have ever paid taxes, you have probably wondered (or exclaimed), “Why are TAXES SO TAXING?!” The South Holland Business Association (SHBA) can’t explain the myriad of reasons why this is true. However, on August 27, 2020, SHBA hosted a multi-chamber webinarwith a panel of experts who helped to clarify the conundrums, detail the components, and provide some calls to action regarding propertytaxes in the south suburban area.SHBA’s Executive Director Blevian Moore facilitated the discussion and the panelists were Cook County Board of Review (BOR) Commissioner Larry Rogers, Jr., Chief Deputy of the BOR William O’Shields, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, and State Senator Napoleon Harris,III.WHAT THE COOK COUNTY ASSESSOR’S OFFICE DOES AND DOESN’T DOThe Assessor’s Office is responsible for valuing the more than 1.8 million parcels in Cook County. Assessor Kaegi explained that while thisinformation is used for real estate tax purposes, the Assessor’s Office does not determine the amount of real estate taxes that are collectedin the county. The local taxing bodies that provide services in the community such as schools, parks, pensions, and library districts determinethe property taxes that are required in the county. The assessed value of your property determines your share of the taxes owed. AssessorKaegi noted that property taxes in the south suburbs are higher than other areas because there is not as much overall assessed value tocover the cost of the established levies.WHAT THE BOR DOES AND DOESN’T DOCommissioner Rogers stated that the BOR provides tax payers, who believe that their properties have been over-assessed, a forum toappeal that decision. If the BOR determines that a property has been over-assessed, the assessment will be lowered. Fortunately, filing anappeal will not cause the assessed value of your property to be increased. Similar to the Assessor’s Office, the BOR does not determine yourtax rate or how much you pay in taxes.WHAT YOUR STATE SENATOR IS DOINGSenator Harris is the chief co-chair of the bi-partisan Property Tax Force which is charged with examining why our taxes are so high andidentifying ways to get tax payers some relief. Senator Harris noted that although the high taxes may deter some people from doing businessin Illinois, the great infrastructure, transportation access, and resources still make the state attractive and appealing to business owners.WHAT YOU CAN DOIf you want to see if your property tax assessment is accurate and/or if you want to stay abreast about what is going on regarding propertytaxes, you can: File an appeal with the Cook County Assessor’s Office: rcial-appeals.File an appeal with the BOR: https://cookcountyboardofreview.com/Sign up for BOR’s text service to learn about its outreach activities by texting ENJOIN to 474747.Contact Senator Harris’ office by going to: http://www.senatornapoleonharris.com/contact-usA Business Boost and a Mega BasketCassandra Griffin, CPCC, DTMSeptember 11, 2020The South Holland Business Association (SHBA) loves to support our members and to share good news. Let’s Do Show and TellCassandra Griffin, CPCC, DTMOctober 1, 2020Whoever said that adults Don’t like to have fun Won’t participate in show and tell Only like stuffy networking events .were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!The South Holland Business Association (SHBA) proved this on October 1, 2020 when it hosted a fun and friendly show and tell virtualnetworking event. The event, which was expertly facilitated by SHBA’s Executive Secretary Alexandra Glumac, gave participants a freshway to get to know each other.Everyone brought something that represented an aspect of their business and took turns giving three clues about their respective item. The other participants used the Zoom chat feature to guess what they thought the item was. While the guesses were being submitted thedesignated “shower” did an elevator speech about their business. There were some very unique items and some really good guessers who accurately surmised the following items: a mask, a rag, a comb,a pocket alarm, a folder, a notebook of historic newspapers, a ceramic hand, a cast-iron vintage iron, a publisher loop, and a giant crayon. Not surprisingly, no one correctly guessed the trampoline. Don’t you wish that you were there to see how these items related to people’sbusinesses?Alexandra was not only the facilitator, but her business Glumac Consulting Group, sponsored the event. She generously provided giftcards to Angela Oldenkamp (Calvin Christian School), Erica Wolak (The Shopper) and Paula Karll (Shear Designs II Hair Salon) who hadthe most correct answers.Navigating the BIG ProgramCassandra Griffin, CPCC, DTMOctober 8, 2020There is no denying that this year has been TOUGH for businesses with few exceptions. The COVID-19 pandemic has probably interrupted your business and dictated how or even if you operated it at all. This may have caused instability which negatively impacted yourfinancial status.I know that my opening paragraph is a bit of a bummer, but keep reading because I also have some good news to share. You may be able to get some help in the form of a Business Interruption Grant (BIG). The BIG Program was developed by GovernorPritzker and the Illinois General Assembly to provide economic relief for small businesses hit the hardest by COVID-19 to help offsetCOVID-19-related losses. On October 8, 2020, the South Holland Business Association (SHBA), in partnership with Chamber 57, hosted a virtual webinar on theBIG Program to ensure that our members and guests were aware of the program. Vicki Brown, Director, Illinois Small Business Development Center, and Matthew Simpson, African-American Business Development Manager, Office of Minority Economic Empowerment– Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity offered their expert insight into the program and described how businessowners can best navigate the application process. Ms. Brown can be reached at Vicki.brown@southlandsbdc.com and Mr. Simpson canbe reached at Matthew.simpson@illinois.gov.Here are some of the highlights of the presentation: 220 million is available for small businesses in Round 2 of the BIG Program.For-profit and non-profit businesses can apply.Submit an accurate and complete application.Grants will be in the amounts of 5,000 to 150,000.Grants will be awarded and accepted on an ongoing basis until the funds are depleted.Applicants will be entered in a lottery pool and winners will be drawn.Businesses do not have to be Grants Accountability and Transparency Act certified. If you received funds in Round 1 of the BIG Program and/or if you received Paycheck Protection Program funds you are still eligible toapply for a Round 2 BIG.Funds have been specifically allocated for Disproportionally Impacted Areas, Heavily Impacted Industries, and Priorities Industries.Businesses with less than 20 million in gross operating revenue in calendar year 2019, or a prorated amount if in operation for lessthan a year prior to March 2020 are eligible to apply for a grant. To obtain additional information about accessing other grants, loans, and other financing opportunities and get more tips about how tonavigate the do’s and don’ts of filing, you can watch the entire webinar. JUICES FLOW WHEN WE IMAGINEBY LARRY GALLERwww.larrygaller.com larry@larrygaller.comListen to people’s language usage when they are trying to sell something. Most of the timetheir language is dull, uninspired, lifeless, featureless, and ordinary as they describe the variousfeatures of their product or service. All that changes if they can transform their language into therealm of the imagination. It starts with transferring the conversation from real-time into the imaginary. A perfect example isthe statement about selling the “sizzle” not the steak. If I had to talk about a steak in realistic terms, I’d have to describe the way it looks, the size, color, texture, and taste (and describing taste is very difficult to do – try it). Pretty dull stuff. But if Ican transfer the conversation to the imaginary: “Imagine a steak sizzling on the grill, just aboutready to be placed on the table in front of you” (I’m getting mouth-wateringly hungry just thinkingabout it). All of a sudden, in my imagination, I can hear the sizzle, smell the smoky fragrance, see the charred exterior, and anticipate cutting a slice then taking my first juicy bite. Much moreappetizing wouldn’t you say?Calling up the imagination isn’t only used in selling. It can also be used while motivating andinspiring “Imagine the sights you will see and how you will feel when you reach the top of themountain.” “Imagine how proud you will feel when you get back your test paper with an “A ”grade.” “Imagine what you will do with all the extra time you will have because you finished early”After each of these introductory statements you can then talk about the things that boostsomeone’s adrenaline: “anticipation,” “reward,” “pride,” “self-worth,” “elation,” “advancement,”“increased income, love, winning, etc.”Delve into your imagination for a moment and think about what you want to communicate. Thenconsider what the “sizzle” is for every possible point you want to emphasize and the language youwill use to get your point across clearly. I’ll bet your vocabulary will become much more vivid asyou will begin to get their juices flowing with anticipation.6AUGUST 2020South Holland Business Association
