CSUN JUMPSTART GRANTSMANSHIP 2-DAY VIRTUAL WORKSHOPAPRIL 10 AND APRIL 17, 2021SPEAKERS, FACILITATORS, AND ORGANIZERSDr. Jerry Stinner is the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics atCalifornia State University, Northridge.Dr. Jennifer Lewis is a Program Director in the Division of UndergraduateEducation (DUE) at the National Science Foundation. She earned herundergraduate degree from North Dakota State University and herdoctorate from Pennsylvania State University, both in chemistry. She hasbeen elected as a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science. She serves as theco-lead of the Improving Undergraduate Education: Hispanic ServingInstitutions (HSI Program) and also works on two other cross-cuttingprograms, the NSF-wide Faculty Early Career Development Program(CAREER) and the Education and Human Resources Directorate’s EHRCore Research program (ECR), in addition to the RobertNoyce Teacher Scholarship Program, the Scholarships in Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Program, and theImproving Undergraduate STEM Education: Education and HumanResources (IUSE: EHR) Program. She identifies as a discipline-basededucational researcher and has published work on argumentation, affect,and measurement. Her current projects include social network analysesof faculty involved in institutional change efforts and measurementinvariance testing to examine whether commonly used measuresfunction for diverse student populations. Jennifer also brings expertise asan experienced project evaluator to the HSI Program.1

Camacho is NSF Program Director for the ADVANCE and HSIprograms as well as being co-Lead for the latter. She is an AssociateProfessor in Applied Mathematics at Arizona State University (ASU). Shepublished the first set of mechanistic models addressing photoreceptordegeneration, providing a new framework through whichexperimentalists can examine retinal degeneration and mitigateblindness. Her research is at the interface of mathematics and physiologyand involves analytical techniques, in silico experiments, computationalwork, and collaborations with experimentalists. She has been awardedthe 2019 AAAS Mentor Award, the 2014 PAESMEM (Presidential Awardfor Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring) fromthe White House, the 2020 Louise Hay Award for Mathematics Educationfrom the Association for Women in Mathematics, the 2018 AmericanAssociation of Hispanics in Higher Education Outstanding Latino/a Facultyin Higher Education Research/Teaching (Research Institutions) Award, the2017 Great Minds in STEM Education Award, the 2012 SACNASDistinguished Undergraduate Mentoring Award, and the 2011 HispanicWomen’s Corporation National Latina Leadership Award among manyother national awards and honors.Dr. Ingrid Padilla serves as Special Advisor to the Chancellor forResearch, Innovation and Creative Endeavors and is a Professor inEnvironmental and Water Resources Engineering at the University ofPuerto Rico, Mayagüez. Her expertise is in contaminant and groundwaterhydrology. She recently served as Program Director at the National atScience Foundation and as a member of the Navy Research AdvisoryCommittee. Dr. Padilla has also been involved as proposal reviewer andpanelist for agencies, programs and organizations. Her work has beenwidely disseminated and recognized through numerous awards.Liza Johnston is a Grants and Contracts Analyst within the office ofResearch and Sponsored Programs (RSP) at California State University,Northridge since 2016. Assist faculty with their sponsored researchproposals in the areas of budget development, proposal submission andaward acceptance. Prior experience as a Grants Manager at the NationalChildhood Cancer Foundation and Grants & Contracts Officer at CedarsSinai Medical Center. Bachelor of Science in Health Administration.2

Her researchinterests include women and faculty of color in the academy; mentoring;the role of estrogen in immune function and liver disease; the effects ofneonatal exposure to environmental estrogens on adult disease; and theroles of nitric oxide in early pregnancy. Dr. Huet earned her B.S. in HumanBiology: Microbiology from the University of Kansas; her Ph.D. (withHonors) in physiology from the University of Kansas Medical Center (thefirst Latina to do so); and had a Postdoctoral Fellowship with MonsantoCompany in Missouri. Her honors include a National Science FoundationMinority Graduate Fellowship and a Ford Foundation DissertationFellowship for Minorities. She has served in many other leadership rolesat UNC Charlotte, including as Coordinator of faculty development,College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Interim Chair, Kinesiology.Dr. Rosa Alcazar teaches Biology at Clovis Community College (CCC) andIs conducting a study to measure the effects of project-based learningcombined with access to mentors, collaborative student learning, andprofessional development on student’s identity and sense of belonging inSTEM. Dr. Alcazar is a first-generation high school graduate, CCC is an HSIin Fresno, CA with 25% first-gen students of multiple marginalizedethnicities.Dr. Mohammed Yahdi is the PI for an NSF-HSI grant project to increaseaccess and success in the STEM workforce for underrepresented andLatinx students. He is currently the Interim Dean of STEM, and typically aMath faculty, at Hartnell College. He has successful collaborations onstate and federal grants and has served in NSF review panels. He hasleadership experiences at colleges and universities, at the CaliforniaInstitutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (PRT), and ataccreditation agencies.3

She iscurrently completing her final semester in the Master’s in Public HealthApplied Epidemiology program at California State University, Northridge.Her research interests include health disparities among ethnic minoritypopulations, and she plans to start a PhD in Public Health program in theFall.Dr. Jorge Iniquez earned a Ph.D. in Biological sciences from UC Irvine, andan undergraduate degree in cell and molecular biology from CaliforniaState University, Northridge (CSUN). He has served as an instructor atCSUN and Pasadena City College (PCC). Dr. Iniguez is improving studentsuccess by providing research opportunities at PCC. His peer-reviewedpublications facilitated a partnership with CSUN that brought the NIHBUILD PODER program to the biology department at PCC. He has receivedover 90,000 in scholarships and fellowships and plans to use hispersuasive writing skills to provide additional funding for the project. Hehas experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and iscommitted to providing equitable access for all students to achievepersonal development, critical thinking, information literacy and literacycompetenceDr. Maria Elena Zavala has been a professor at CSUN for the last 30years, where she has pioneered the Maximizing Access to ResearchCareers (MARC) and Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)diversity programs for STEM. She earned her undergraduate degree inBotany from Pomona College and her PhD in Botany from UC Berkeley.Dr. Zavala’s research focuses on the developmental regulation of plants.She served as president of the Society for the Advancement ofChicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and waselected to the ASPB Executive Committee. Her achievements in researchand mentoring have been recognized with the Presidential Award forExcellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering, the CSU TrusteeFaculty award, and her societal appointments as a fellow by the AmericanAssociation for the Advancement of Science, American Society for PlantBiology, and American Society for Cell Biology.4

Dr. Vela hasdevoted her career to diversifying STEM through supporting and trainingunderserved students. Her contributions to broadening participation ofunderrepresented groups in STEM include serving Delaware StateUniversity as the Assistant Director for the Science and MathematicsInitiative for Learning Enrichment; performing analysis on broaderimpacts as a National Science Foundation Summer Scholar; and servingChild, Youth, and School Services for Fort Lee, Virginia as the ProjectDirector for the HIRED!Program. She has also designed and leadworkshops for college students and researchers on various topicsincluding interdisciplinary research, complex socio-environmentalproblems, and college success. As a researcher, Dr. Vela has successfullyengaged community-based research focused on the relationships ofwater inequity and educational attainment for communities on theSouthern U.S. Border while mentoring and supporting threeundergraduate researchers during her doctoral studies. Margie hasserved as a USAID volunteer consultant for rural organic farmers inColombia for water use and organizational development.5
