Personal calls during the workday, regardless of the phone used, can interfere with employee productivity and can be distractingto others. Employees are thereforeasked to make personal calls during non-work time. When answering the phone, everyemployee should please state theirname and department (see page 6).We hope all employees will adhere to these policies so that Yeledv’Yalda can uphold its professionaland courteous reputation.Another successful managers’ train-From the Desk of It has been a really wonderful two years since I accepted the position of Directorof Nutrition Services at Yeled v’Yalda. I have worked for YvY a total of 14 years, initially as a nutrition consultant for the Head Start sites and now in my currentposition that includes overseeing the 24 Head Start sites, worksite wellness, healthymenus and the NYSDOH Childhood Obesity Prevention Grant — Eat Well PlayHard in Community Project.I have always been inspired to encourage people to live healthy lives using food, nutrition and physical activity — a natural match at YvY. I take pleasure in observinghow conscientious everyone is in the lunches they bring, the foods we serve at meetings and in the many questions I field about health, nutrition and recipes. I enjoy theabundance of support I receive in the many initiatives I spearhead in my position. As director of the Eat Well Play Hard in Community Project, I work with Brooklyn schools to create School Wellness Councils and promote sustainable changes toschool and community policies that support healthy nutrition and physical activityobjectives. It has been eye-opening to see how pervasive unhealthy eating habits andobesity are in our own back yard. We have partnered with many neighboring agencies in the Brooklyn Task Force on Food and Fitness to increase the availability andaccessibility of healthy foods and physical activity in NYC.One of my initial projects was to increase physical activity in the curricula andprovide healthy eating choices in all YvY programs. We have had great endorsementfrom our administration and directors in pursuing these objectives. We have annualtrainings for our teachers and staff to improve health initiatives at every site. We havehad so much fun in implementing the NYCDOH SPARK training, “I am MovingI am Learning,” a project of the Office of Head Start. A new venture this year isinstituting curriculum from the UCLA/Johnson and Johnson Health care Institutecollaborative “Eat Healthy — Stay Active.” We have trained over 100 teachers eachyear and brought many exciting materials into the classroom for our children andstaff to use. It is very encouraging to see the staff and children embody these initiatives in their daily lives in and out of the classroom. When teachers stop me in thehallway and request extra music or equipment, it really impresses me how diligentthey are in getting involved in these objectives. What I love most about YvY is working among a large array of amazing womenwho take pride in the work they do and who present themselves as role models bothpersonally and professionally.Sincerely,(continued on page 6)Karen Kronenberg presents at the managers’ trainingDina Lipkind Ms, RD, CDNNew Faces at YvYRuth Kutcher-BierLayah DavidowitzHindy Z. 4 / Yeled v’Yalda Ink Winter 2009ACS Review Coming UpIt’s hard to believe that ACS HeadStart will be reviewed once again thiscoming July. A team of 50 people fromall over the country will be convergingon New York City when they will visitat some or all of the 73 delegate HeadStart Agencies. Whether they come toYeled v’Yalda or not, we will be prepared to impress the reviewers withour professionalism and high standards of performance.— Naomi AuerbachDirectorFE (continued from page 1)Farragut RoadNAEYC VisitYeled v’Yalda at Farragut Road received a long awaited visit froman NAEYC (National Associationfor the Education of Young Children:http://www.naeyc.org) assessor during the week of February 9-11. Theentire staff had been working for twolong, arduous years preparing for thisprestigious accreditation assessment:11 weighty program binders were prepared; 14 assistant teachers obtainedtheir CDA certification; 14 teacherstook CPR and First Aid Classes; 14teachers prepared thick classroomportfolios full of photos and writingshowing how their classes met all thenumerous criteria; lengthy classroomand teacher observations were performed and documented; and pageafter page of questionnaires werefilled out by parents and staff. In addition, the cleanliness and attractiveness of the site was outstanding (asusual).Education Director Bina Cuninwas heard raving enthusiastically.“The entire staff was amazinglywonderful! They really performedover and beyond the call of duty!”Directors Naomi Auerbach andWayne Goldberg sent a letter expressing their appreciation to all thededicated staff at the Farragut Roadsite. “You all went the extra mile andwhether we receive accreditation ornot, we thank you for it all.”program director, three enrollers, onedata entry clerk, and a quality assuranceofficer. This growth in staff has affordedthe FE department with the opportunity to visit other YvY sites, as well ascommunity schools, to spread the wordabout the services that we offer. Localschools publicize our services in theirnewsletters and on designated days, enrollers are sent to yeshivas to assist potential clients with enrolling in healthinsurance.Last April, the Facilitated Enrollmentoffice moved to the second floor of thespacious new building of Yeled v’Yaldaheadquarters on 38th Street in BoroPark. The move came not a moment toosoon. In our previous office, we werelimited with space and at times the officeoverflowedwithclients. We longedfor the daywhen wewould beabletospread outin a brand new office. Our new office isvery spacious and child friendly. The onlydownside to our new location is the lackof parking available. I live in Queens, asmany know and not only do I leave earlyto try to beat traffic, but I do so to find aparking space close to the building. While the FE department is one ofthe newest members of the YvY family,we do not feel like the new kid on theblock any more. Since moving into thenew building we have more direct contact with other YvY staff and are able toget to know them in a personal as wellas professional way. Friendships havebeen made. It’s wonderful being groupedtogether with the WIC department asmany WIC participants do need healthinsurance and are sometimes at a loss forhow to go about applying for it, and viceversa with FE clients and WIC services.Receiving D’vrei Torah every week fromNaomi Auerbach also helps to cementthe feeling that we are indeed part of thefamily that makes up YvY. My staff hasinformed me that it is the little thingsthat count. To inquire about any or all healthinsurance programs, for a screening orto set up an appointment, please call718.686.2188 or 718.686.2189 Mondaythrough Thursday, 9 am – 5 pm, Friday9 am – 12 pm.Again, happy birthday to YvY’s FEdepartment We have certainly surpassedthe crawling stage and are steady on ourfeet. We are cruising now!(above) Facilitated Enrollment staff. (inset) Michelle Goldkrantz, Director of Facilitated Enrollment

Yeled v’Yalda Ink Winter 2009 / 7H “Have you ever deliberately ignored the ringing of yourere are some of the comments we got in response to our survey question:MissedCall!(cell) phone? Of course you have! Why?” Why? Duh, isn’t it obvious? Now,when YOU called, I really didn’t hearthe phone. Or, I really wasn’t near thephone. Or a gazillion other reasons I knew that the caller was waiting fora specific answer and I did not havethe answer yet. If I know the call is not for me (athome) and the person being soughtisn’t around. If I’m up to my neck in chicken fat orchallah dough, I will let my phone ring. Sometimes you are just not ready topick up the next call — guess what?Even Sullenberger’s wife ignoredhis call twice before she reluctantlypicked up the third time. I don’t pick up the phone if I’m in apublic area and my conversation will irritate the people around me. Also when I need my own quiet time — like forat least an hour after work every day; Ineed to relax and there’s no way I cananswer that annoying phone! It was on during a meeting — andwas disruptiveWhen I’m enjoying some peace andquiet The phone these days is the biggest painin the neck. Instead of being a help it’sthe biggest nuisance. Let it ring.Usually when I ignore my phone it’sbecause I’m not in the mood of speaking to the person on the other end ofthe line. LOLI think it is rude to deliberately ignorecalls on my cell phone and I don’t do it.I give out my number to people I wantto talk to. If I am in a meeting, I willturn off my cell phone and when some-onecalls, it goesstraight tovoicema il.Then they knowI am not availableand have the option of leaving amessage or keeptrying me. Yes, I have, when I found it was impolite to talk. For example, the street,in middle of a meeting, at an officialgathering, and the like. I am in a store doing grocery shopping. I don’t pick up any calls with thewords “Congregation” or “Survey” or“1-800 ” listed in the caller ID.Proud GrandparentsSimi Schlafrig (BP) — 2 grandsonsRabbi Chaim and Esther Szanzer (BP), grandsonYehudis Krasner (WIC), grandsonRaizel Landa (W), grandsonZissy Mayer (W), grandsonBayla Andrusier (W) grandson and granddaughterSarah Blesofsky (F) granddaughter Chaya MushkaGitty Lichtenstein (BP), grandsonMarriagesChana Tova (Schreiber) Berkowitz (BP)Vicki Edelstien’s (BP) daughterRochel Rosen’s (BP) sonHadassa (Kimmel) Lemberger (WIC)Devora (Bilgoray) Singer (WIC)Suri (Schwartz) Eizekovic (BP)Devoiry Katz’s (BP) sonMordechai Roth’s (BP) daughterEsty (Rubinstein) Goldenberg (BP)EngagementsFraidy Teitelbaum (BP) Mordy NeumanRivky Sompolinsky’s (BP) son Shimshon SenderMazelY v Y C e l e b rat i o n sto Latzie RothmanShany Bodenstein (BP) to Zvi Hersh MashitzDevoiri Weinstein (BP) to Yossi LewinAriela Landsberg (BP) to Dovid SchwartzEsther Friedman’s (BP) daughterZeldy Pinter’s (BP) sonMalya Dinerman’s (BP) daughterNew BabyChaya Ruchie Bornstein (BP), boyChumie Moskowitz (BP), girlMordechai Schwartz (BP), girlGitty Harrar (BP), boyChana Sury Steuer (BP)Mazzy Zafrani (F), boy ShalomMalky Shonberger (BP), girlDevoiry Horowitz (BP), boyMalky Roth (BP), boyTov!Leibel Weinstock (IT), twin girlsShaindy Nussencweig (WIC), girlChanie Baum (W), boyRuchy Greenwald (W), girl Sara MiriamRabbi Steinmetz (W), boyDevory Bodenstein (BP), boyMafata Keita (SI), baby girlPearl Shakowitzky, (BP) boyBar MitzvahLibby Chein’s (BP) son MendeAtara Schachter’s (W) sonNew HomeLynn Kancso (SI) and her husband bought ahouse
