Full Servicefor YouWinter 2022 - Volume 42from the Office of Sponsored ProgramsA Word from the OSP Staff“The sooner, the better” - A phrase that we often use meaning as quickly or earlyas possible. The phrase is very applicable when it comes to grant writing and submission. OSP can assist you in many ways with your grant proposals. From getting Funding Opportunity Announcements to the actual Submission to the Sponsor, OSP can help.Contact us with your idea for a project today!- John and KristiOSP SpotlightDr. Howard WhitemanNational Science FoundationDr. Howard Whiteman, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of theWatershed Studies Institute in the Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering andTechnology, was recently awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).The grant in the amount of 44,696 will be used to fund a study entitled RAPID: DoRange Shifting Species Alter Ecosystem Phenology? Dr. Whiteman is conducting thisresearch with four collaborators at other universities.Organisms that feed on plants play important roles in moving energy and nutrients through ecosystems. These ecosystem processes underlie many of the services thatecosystems provide societies such as fisheries, clean drinking water, and carbon storage. However, the identity and abundance of organisms in ecosystems is changing as warmclimate species migrate into cooler regions that are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Understanding how these species movements alter ecosystem processes isan important step in anticipating and managing the impacts of climate change onecosystems and their services.Specifically, this research will investigate the ecosystem impact of a dramaticincrease in the abundance of a recent migrant caddisfly (insect) that has a novel life history trait of larval development occurring in the fall and winter, rather than summer likelocally native species. The rapid population growth of this range-shifting species providesa unique opportunity to test their impacts on interlinked ecosystem processes insubalpine wetlands.
