2020Annual ReportOvercoming COVID-19

To say Doctors Care is one of the lucky ones is anunderstatement. As the pandemic struck and wreakedhavoc across the world, we watched in disbelief ashospitals were overwhelmed, people lost jobs, andnonprofits were forced to shut down permanently. WhenI wrote last year’s letter, I could not imagine we wouldmake such dramatic shifts. Doctors Care is lucky to be anonprofit with a clear purpose, a strong board, and dedicated staff and volunteers that readily adapted to a newworld order. In 2020, Doctors Care implemented telemedicine, purchased personal protective equipment, and sent themajority of staff home to work remotely, while adheringto local and state guidelines. The clinic remained open tocare for our patients. None of it would have been possiblewithout the generosity of the community, the PaymentProtection Plan loan (that has been forgiven), and CARESAct funding. We are now in a position to be part of the solution, distributing the COVID-19 vaccine to our patientsand community members.Letter from CEOI want to extend a special thank you to our 2019/2020board president, Ellen Burkett, MD. She helped inform, support, advocate, and champion our organization during a very turbulent year. Our executive committee, GaryVanderArk, MD, Morre Dean, Kathy Ashenfelter, and KatieLozano, MD, FACR met often and kept steady hands onthe wheel. Our whole board showed up, contributed, andstayed very present in our work, mission, and vision. Itwas a stressful year for everyone, and now hope is aroundthe corner. We are truly one of the lucky ones.Thank you.

Luck and Resilience, in the Time of COVID-192020 was a year like no other, thanks to COVID-19. The effect on Doctors Care was widespread, impacting staff, patients and clients, and the organization’s financial stability. Patients initially chose to forego well care and adhere tostay at home orders. Volunteers went on hiatus due to risk factors, creating a strain on staff. Telemedicine was quicklyadopted as a safe alternative to in-person visits, which was costly in staff time and expenses.Throughout the year, Doctors Care stayed committed to caring for our patients and clients, many disproportionatelyaffected by COVID-19. Some staff remained onsite, others worked remotely as we followed ever-changing officialguidelines. Doctors Care sought to preserve safety and access for those in need of services, despite the fear ofCOVID-19.The onset and spread of COVID-19 had devastating consequences on everyone, but low-incomeindividuals are at increased risk due to disparities brought on by social and economic circumstances.

Our ServicesAs the months passed, Doctors Care cautiously opened more appointments while continuing to safely operate. Patientswere encouraged to return for medical services to mitigate health setbacks and stay healthy. As a result, Doctors Care wasable to calm fears, and provide care that addressed people’s needs as we navigated our way through the pandemic.6,7851,098Sick and well care visitsEnrollments in Medicaid, CHP andConnect for Health qualified plans1,9092,0001,1857301,400ConductedTelehealth visits to keeppatients and providers safe.Behavioral Health visits to address stress, anxiety, and depression worsened by COVIDCare Coordination for specialty referrals, hospital transition, and social barriers to careIndividuals screened for barriers tooverall health and well-beingFlu vaccinations administered topatients and community membersCOVID-19 tests when symptomspresented, with few positive results

Pandemic ResponseVolunteerismShortly after COVID-19 hit, Doctors Care convened aPandemic Response Team consisting of key staff and avolunteer physician with a background in public health.Volunteers are a mainstay of Doctors Care - an integralpart of the mission. Their service and expertise benefitsthe organization by broadening capacity to help peoplein need, without adding costs. When COVID-19 hit, volunteers initially stayed safe at home due to riskfactors. The team met weekly throughout 2020 to reviewongoing developments in COVID-19 safety guidelinesand protocols, discuss adjustments in patientscheduling, determine who and how many were safe tobe in the building, and implement changes or directives. The team kept the focus on safety, while slowly inchingthe organization closer to pre-pandemic normalcy. Bythe end of 2020, the focus turned to planning for theanticipated arrival and implementation of COVID-19vaccines, giving everyone hope for a brighter future.Volunteer medical providers however, soon returned toconduct telemedicine visits that increased continuity ofcare. Health Access volunteers trained on newtechnology that gave them the ability to work fromhome and still help clients with insurance enrollmentand resources for social determinant needs. In total, 87 volunteers devoted over7,800 hours of time valued at 417,000.Volunteer Manager,Jana Baker, became thede facto front deskgreeter, so others couldstay safe at home. Thanks to technology, the team met via Zoom each week, allowing staff to social distance while staying productive.See All Volunteers

Financial Stability Leads to Healthy OutcomesThe financial effect of COVID-19 was felt immediately byDoctors Care. Fear of the virus meant fewer patientsand loss of revenue. Fortunately, the community wentabove and beyond their usual support, and opportunitiessuch as the Payment Protection Program and CARES Actfunding provided some financial relief.See All DonorsCharity NavigatorDoctors Care earns its Ninth Consecutive 4-Star Rating!America’s premier charity evaluator, CharityNavigator, has given a 4-star rating to Doctors Carefor strong financial health and commitment toaccountability and transparency.
