June 12, 2022FROM THE PASTORThe Fruits of My RetreatI was on retreat at the Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, MA two weeks ago. The day I left, I saidthe morning Mass. The day’s first reading was Acts 14: 21-28. The reading told of St. Paul returning to Antiochat the end of his first missionary journey. The passage describes how when St. Paul returned, he gathered theChurch and told them all about his success preaching to the Gentiles. After Mass, Deacon Joe and I talkedabout that, and Deacon Joe laid down a challenge for me. He suggested, like St. Paul, I share the fruits of myretreat when I return.I’ll admit his suggestion pushed the limit of my comfort zone. Like most Catholics, sharing the fruits of myprayer feels intimidating. I’m reluctant to talk about the results of my prayer and conversations with Godbecause they seem too personal to discuss with others. Then I thought maybe we Catholics should do moreof that with others. Perhaps it would be good for others to hear how we converse with God and its impact onour lives. It would help us grow in our relationship with God and encourage others to pray. The retreat I went to was a Directed Retreat; it is one where the retreatant meets with a Spiritual Directorfor about an hour each day to discuss the results of the retreatant’s prayer. The Spiritual Director gives theretreatant a passage of scripture to help focus their prayer. The first evening my director asked me to focus onPsalm 139. The Bible provides this psalm with the subtitle: The All-Knowing and Ever-Present God. In thispsalm, the author recognizes that God is always watching over us, ready to give us what we need. My directorasked me to consider what I wanted or needed from God on my retreat.I read the psalm and focused on verse 12, “For you, darkness itself is not dark, and night shines as the day.[Darkness and light are the same.] I chose it because I feel I wanted to be like God and be able to see throughthe darkness I might feel in the present to the light that will shine in the future. Knowing of that wish, thedirector next asked me to reflect on the healing of blind Bartimaeus and some other of Jesus’ healing stories.I decided on the story of Jesus’ healing of the paralytic. In it, Jesus is teaching in a house to a large crowd, and friends of the paralytic tried to carry him to Jesus, but they couldn’t get through the gathering of people. They go up on the roof, tear it away and lower him down in front of Jesus. Jesus heals the man. The crowd isastounded, all except for a demon and some religious authorities. They try to throw darkness on the situation. The religious leaders get angry because Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven. Something they say onlyGod can do. The demon is mad because he knows Jesus has power over demons.Darkness doesn’t hinder Jesus, and he sees through it to the light of God’s love when he healed. That is thekind of night sight I was praying for when I read that psalm verse. I desire the same sort of authority Jesusdisplayed in his preaching and healing. As I reflected more on Jesus’ use of authority over the rest of the week,I realized Jesus’ authority didn’t come from using his prerogative as the Son of God but by exercising mercyand forgiveness. Those are what astonished the crowds and made Jesus loved by them. I came away from myweek of prayer with the realization that as a pastor, it is in my imitation of Jesus’ love and mercy and notexercising any of my prerogatives as a church leader that I see through the darkness to God’s authority. Now Ihave to pray to put it into practice.“Journeying Together in Faith and Love”The 81st Annual Catholic Appeal continues. June 12, 2022National Eucharistic RevivalAll across the country, Catholic churches will bekicking off the National Eucharistic Revival onCorpus Christi Sunday, June 19, 2022. The revival is athree-year grassroots effort by US Bishops to helprevive devotion to the Real Presence of Christ in theEucharist. The Catholic belief that Jesus Christ ispresent, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in theEucharist is the sum and summit of our Catholicfaith. Over the last few decades, this belief hasbegun to wan among American Catholics, and thebishops are working to reverse that trend. The resultof the revival is the hope for Catholics to morefaithfully adhere to liturgical norms in their richness. This revival is an urgent need for the post-pandemicChurch.
