Then in 2014, theywere in the family waiting room outside the main operating rooms andrecognized that, after 14 years, the room desperately needed a facelift. Soonce again, they stepped up to the plate to provide a healing environmentfor family members and friends who were anxiously waiting for their lovedones to come out of surgery. There is a plaque on the wall behind thereception desk, recognizing their gift which was made in loving memoryof those whom they hold dear. The tournament, held March 29 at Lake Jovita Golf and CountryClub in Dade City, also drew a record 184 golfers, said ChrisRoederer, senior vice president, Human Resources.“The tournament committee, made up of staff from HumanResources, Employee Wellness, Volunteer Services, EmployeeHealth, Information Technologies and Patient Relations, did awonderful job planning and running the event,” Chris said. The proceeds will fund future purchases of new fitnessequipment for the Health & Wellness Center and educationalprograms for employees, he said. The six tournaments combined have raised 421,099 tosupport the Employee Emergency Fund (which providesfinancial assistance to employees who experience unforeseenhardships), the Health & Wellness Center, and employeewellness and educational programs.Ross Hays, Chris Roederer, David Thaxton and Duffy ThaxtonBecome An Organ DonorApril was Donate Life Month. Tampa General Hospital and LifeLink of Florida honored the spiritof those who make transplants possible – organ, tissue and eye donors.Organ donation provides the gift of life to tens of thousands of people each year through heart, kidney, lung, liver, and pancreas or intestine transplants. Without the generosity of organ donors, those waiting will die.More than 24,000 patients began new lives in 2014 thanks to organ transplants.Nearly 124,000 people in the U.S. are currently waiting for an organ transplant, and morethan 10,000 of them are 10 years old or younger. To learn more about organ donation or to register to become a donor, sign up on Florida’s donorregistry at www.DonateLifeFlorida.org.8Philanthropy is defined as “love of humanity” in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing “what it is to be human” onboth the benefactors’ (by identifying and exercising their values in givingand volunteering) and beneficiaries’ (by benefiting) parts. The mostconventional modern definition is “private initiatives, for public good, focusing on quality of life.” Nonprofit hospitals depend on philanthropyfor construction, equipment, research, programs and services. The focusgoes beyond providing care to the setting where the care is provided. At Tampa General Hospital, we are committed to providing patientcentered care in a healing environment. The Tampa General Hospital Foundation has been blessed by the supportof Ed and Beverly Flom, and their gifts have touched the lives of countlesspatients and their families.Ed and Beverly Flom are shining examples of caring donors who giveback to multiple charities, from Meals on Wheels to the school theirgrandchildren attend to the Tampa General Hospital Foundation. The Floms have been Foundation donors since 1987.
