EDITOR’S LET TER“My Attorney and CPARecommended my Bank.”Redefining the “Re-gift”President, Epperson & CompanySOMMER STILESEleven o’clock in the morning, ChristmasDay, 1996. My family gathered around me.I picked up a large box, wrapped in thick, green and white striped paper with a velvetbow and a tag marked with my name. AsI untied the bow and began pulling backthe layers of paper I wondered what layenclosed in such enticing wrappings. Iremoved the lid of the box and therein lay abubble gum pink Barbie-themed backpack— the perfect gift for a little girl in grammarschool. I was a teenager in high school. That year I learned the meaning of “regift.” Over the years, re-gifting has becomesomewhat of a social taboo. In my family, ithas become a bit of an inside joke.More recently, in working on this issueof The Sandspur, I began to rethink theconcept of re-gifting. Members of TheJunior League of Tampa are given a valuablegift: training and the opportunity to developtheir potential, which, in turn, they give backto the community through their service andleadership. The League receives generoussupport from donors and communitypartners allowing the organization to furtherits Mission. Arguably, we are one of the mostpositive examples of re-gifting. We haveredefined what it means to re-gift.“A Season for Giving” is a look at the manyfacets of giving and re-giving, or “payingit forward,” to borrow the coined phrase.Perhaps the term “re-gifting” will never loseits negative connotation. Who’s to say —talk to me after Christmas. The cycle ofgive and receive is sure to remain, and forThe Junior League of Tampa, as illustratedin the following pages, the cycle continuesyear round. We begin this issue with an article byAshley Collado in which she uncovers themany aspects of the JLT commitment to thecommunity to reveal the gift that keeps ongiving in An Enduring Contribution.Ad 2 Tampa Bay Selects JLT for SexTrafficking Awareness Campaign andSPAC Sets Legislative Priorities at FallConference in Tampa, both written byPublic Affairs Chair Mary Ellen Collinshighlight League advocacy efforts andremind us no good deed goes unnoticed.Highlighting the key issue area of education,Danielle Marone explores how many projectsof the League work as one to address thisissue in her article Literacy & Hunger andtheir Influence on School Success.Jaymi Butler follows suit in her article, Kidsin the Kitchen Aims to Improve Outcomesin Sulphur Springs, giving us a tangibleexample of League efforts at work.Giving Above and Beyond, EnablingFund and Community Action by KathrynHall brings these “behind-the-scenes”committees into the limelight and remindsus of the always-expanding length of reachthe League has in the community. In our second installment of theConversations series, Beth Edwardsshares what she learned from her interviewwith MaryEllen Elia, Superintendent ofHillsborough County Public Schools, andteaches us about Common Core StateStandards.Wrapping up this issue, Avril Shelton’s articleTo Give is to Receive, Realizing the Giftof Voluntarism answers the questions “whyvolunteer?” — in a matter of words.Truly ‘tis “A Season for Giving.”SOMMER STILESEditor, The SandspurActive Since 2010Established in 1932, Epperson & Company isa leading supplier of bulk material conveyingproducts and services, with annual sales of 20million. BEHIND THE BALUSTRADESThe Power of OneLEE LOWRYOur overarching theme this year at TheJunior League of Tampa is “The Powerof One.” We have used it to illustrate ourinvestment in the community in our AnnualProfile, have used it in internal documentsto inspire our members, and have includedit in our fundraising letters to make ourcase to donors. And as the year goes on,I continue to find new meaning in thatsimple phrase.I began writing this letter while sitting inthe non-public areas of the Florida StateFairgrounds, in the warren-like roomsbehind the scenes at our 10th annualHoliday Gift Market. That one event raisedmore than 100,000 for our projects andprograms this year, and attracted 13,888patrons, our largest crowd ever by morethan 2,000 people. Each member of theall-volunteer committee did their singularjob so well that in 2013 we can say that ourevent has become a true “Tampa Tradition.”Another “one:” here at JLT, our volunteerplaceme
