McCain, Esq.IFiscal year 2003 (July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003) was anexciting year for the Tampa General Hospital Foundation.Through the kindness and generosity of our friendsand benefactors, we were able to raise 2.8 million.This tremendous increase enabled the Foundation tostrengthen its support to the hospital by providing 1.1million towards various programs, projects and services.The generosity of our benefactors is crucial to TGHachieving its vision of being a leading medical center inFlorida. Your gifts help purchase cutting-edge medicalequipment, provide continuing education for the nursingand medical staff, and much more.As we approach our 30th anniversary we are beginningto realize the dreams and aspirations of the compassionate citizens that formed the Foundation in 1974.Today's success is credited to the actions of the business and community leaders who have volunteered theirtime and leadership as members of our Board of Trustees.Their influence and experience has helped shape andguide the Foundation into a true source of financialsupport for Tampa General Hospital.2003 was a year filled with many special people,programs and events that helped shape and position theFoundation for continued growth.

2003 SPECIAL EVENTSSIGNATURE EVENTS – A GREAT WAY TO GET INVOLVEDOur Signature Events are a wonderful way to raise funds for the hospital. The continuing community outreach and relationship building that results from these eventsis as important as the funds raised. Each event adds new friends and supporters andincreases awareness of Tampa General Hospital and its programs and services.The TGH Foundation is proud to produce three signature events each yearto benefit the programs and services of TGH.left to right: Patsy Woodroffe, Lynn Fluharty,Robin DeLaVergne, Stacey Packer, SamanthaWarren, McIver Berner and Sandy Thomasenjoy a night at the circus.Annual Night at the “Greatest Show on Earth”Feld Entertainment’s Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus presented the12th Annual “Night at the Circus” on January 2, 2003. The event raised 127,000 innet proceeds for the Pediatric Emergency Care Center at TGH.Samantha Warren, the 2003 Circus Chairperson, brought a wealth of knowledge andexperience to the planning of this very worthwhile and creative event. Samantha is respected and appreciated as an involved and detail-oriented leader.The 2003 “Moments In Time” GalaThe 2003 “Moments In Time” Gala was a huge success. The theme brought theFabulous Fifties alive at Crown Lanes.Debra Roberts, chairperson of the2003 “Moments In Time” Gala.Guests arrived in letter sweaters, poodle skirts, and saddle shoes and enjoyed anostalgic trip down memory lane. They bowled, danced, and enjoyed a Las VegasNight Club with acts saluting the fifties’ biggest entertainers. The event surpassedthe TGH Foundation’s goal by netting 130,000 for the Pediatric Emergency CareCenter at TGH. The event also won the “Most Creative and Fun Event” of 2003from Cultural Affairs Magazine. Debra Roberts, the 2003 Chairperson, is wellknown in our community for her dedication and support of many local charities. Weare so fortunate that she has joined the TGH Foundation family.The 5th Annual Golf Tournamentleft to right: Rick Thomas, Stella Thayer,Stacey Packer, Walter Baldwin and Joe Taggartat the Annual Golf Tournament.IIIIn its fifth year, this exclusive event surpassed the TGH Foundation’s goal by netting 145,000. Held on November 3, at Old Memorial Golf Club, 72 golfers enjoyedbeautiful weather and excellent course conditions.The event co-chairs, Joe Taggart and Al Silva, provided exceptional support to theplanning committee. Their professional contributions are key to the tournament’s success.

Other annual events include:2003 Annual DinnerThe 29th Annual Dinner of the Foundation was held on September 16 at theTampa Yacht and Country Club. The annual dinner provides an opportunity forFoundation leaders and supporters to review our accomplishments of the past year.Stella Ferguson Thayer presented the 2003 James M. “Red” McEwen Award toRon & Sandy Smith. This award recognizes those whose past efforts, good worksand service have contributed most significantly to the betterment of TampaGeneral Hospital. Laura Blain, TGH Auxiliary member, presented the Madeleine P.Gibbons award to Mary Lavettre in recognition for her outstanding service as aTGH volunteer.Mary Lavettre accepts the Madeleine P. Gibbons Awardfrom Laura Blain at the 2003 Annual Dinner.White Coat Mini-Internship ProgramTGH’s White Coat Mini-Internship Program allows community and businessleaders to experience a major teaching hospital from an insider’s point of view.Each intern is paired with a TGH physician for an entire day. Nothing isprearranged or “sugar coated.” The intern accompanies their physician everywhere – on rounds, in patient consultations, and even into the operating room.Our goal is to give the interns a real day in the life of a physician with all itsintensity, drama and complexity. It is an opportunity not only to demonstratethe expertise of our physicians and staff, but also their humanity. The WhiteCoat Program was held three times in 2003 with a total of fifty interns completingthe program. Since the program began at the hospital in the spring of 2000,126 interns have completed the program.Kathy Castor spends time at Genesis withCatherine Lynch, M.D. during the White Coat Program.2003 SPECIAL EQUIPMENTTechnology is vital to how we are able to treat and care for patients. Technologicaladvancements in equipment are changing how medical students are taught, howdiseases can be diagnosed and how patients are treated.In 2003, Foundation funds enabled the hospital to purchase two highly specializedpieces of equipment, the MIST-4 Virtual Reality Simulator and the Fluorescent In SituHybridization Microscope. Mr. andMrs. Thayer have beenlong-standing supporters of Tampa General Hospital beginning in the early 1980’s, whenMrs. Thayer served as Chairman and member of the HillsboroughCounty Hospital Authority Board.In 2002, the Foundation was very fortunate when Mrs. Thayeragreed to Chair the Tampa General Hospital Foundation Board ofTrustees. Through her leadership, the Foundation has continued toprosper and grow.In 2003, the Foundation was the recipient of the Thayer’s outstanding generosity when Mr. and Mrs. Thayer committed 1 million to the“Building on Excellence” campaign. This is the largest gift theFoundation has ever received and truly marks a milestone in theFoundation’s history. This gift will not only benefit the patients andfamilies that will utilize the new Emergency and Trauma departments,but also establish the Foundation as a real source of financial supportfor Tampa General Hospital.VRon and Sandy SmithIf you met Ron and Sandy Smith, youwould be hard pressed to get them to talkabout themselves, or about how muchthey have done for our patients andfamilies. Ron and Sandy are a husband and wife team who are thedriving force behind the annual International Brotherhood of ElectricalWorkers (IBEW) Local 108 Charity Golf Tournament, which hasraised over 100,000 for the Tampa General Hospital RegionalBurn Center. The IBEW Local 108 Burn Center Endowment andthe IBEW Family Crisis Fund provide critical support for patientsand families in need, as well as continuing education opportunities for medical staff. Ron & Sandy also raise money for ourChildren’s Medical Center.In October 2003, the Smiths were awarded the James M. “Red”McEwen Award for their long-standing friendship with the TampaGeneral Hospital Foundation. The hospital and the Foundation aregrateful to have the Smiths and the IBEW Local 108 as partnersin helping the patients and families of our Burn Center.Special Partners -- TheIBEW Local 108 andTECO partner togethereach year to provideessential support forthe patients andfamilies of the TGHRegional Burn Center.The Foundation andTGH are touched bythe kindness andgenerosity of TECOand the IBEW.

TGH was able to increasethe number of recipients into the program, thanks to the generosityof the William A. Gregory Jr. Foundation.The Foundation and TGH hope to continue to expand this programand become more involved in finding a solution to the critical nursingshortage that is threatening the United States.“Through the generosity of the TGH Foundation, it will bepossible for me and the other scholarship recipients to join anoutstanding staff of caring nurses at TGH. I believe this programwill become a cornerstone in how to develop a better workplaceby providing employees with educational advancement.” --Katrina Yorkey, SDU ---Unit Coordinator/PCT“Building on Excellence” Campaign – Community DonorsTampa General Hospital Foundation is proud to announce its first evermulti-million dollar capital campaign entitled, “Building on Excellence.”The campaign is being co-chaired by current Foundation board chair,Stella Ferguson Thayer and immediate past chairman, James W. Warren,III. The campaign seeks to raise 10 million in support of the hospital’splan to build a new, state-of-the-art Trauma and Emergency Center, aspart of the 120 million hospital-wide expansion program.The focus of the campaign in this past year has been on the manymembers of the “TGH Family.” The Family is composed of those who areclosest to the hospital including the members of the hospital andFoundation boards, the staff, physicians and volunteers. We are verypleased to report that in 2003 these groups raised 3.5 million in support of the goal. As we bring the campaign to our many benefactors andfriends in the Tampa Bay community, their generous support will send aclear message to all that they believe in this campaign and in TGH. TGH employees actively donate their timeand their financial resources to the hospital and many charities in our community.
