A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORDear Capitol Squash family,When Capitol Squash re-launched five yearsago in 2014, our goal was to support as manyHartford students as we could in a deep andmeaningful way. During the school year, ourstudents receive at least three days of squashand academic support as well as additionalweekend school visits, cultural opportunities,and matches. We also provide a five-weeksummer program. In the 2018-2019 academic school year, our students averaged a 93%attendance rate.OUR MISSIONThe mission of Capitol Squash is to empoweryouth of Hartford to reach their potential asathletes, students, and engaged citizens.Capitol Squash strives to provide urban youthwith life-changing opportunities through thesport of squash, intensive educational support,mentoring, and community service activities.Trinity College has welcomed us into theirhome. The college provides courts and classrooms for our program, and Trinity studentsgenerously provide academic help and squashcoaching to our youth. Nearly all of the Capitol Squash students grew up in the neighborhoods surrounding Trinity without ever havingstepped on campus prior to joining CapitolSquash. Now many of them feel as comfortableat Trinity as they do at their own schools.When we initially set out to serve as manystudents as possible, we knew one day wewould outgrow the space at Trinity. We’renow bursting at the seams with studentsspanning from fourth to tenth grade. Wedidn’t know back in 2014 if Trinity would bethe permanent home for Capitol Squash, butI’m excited to share we’ve recently signeda Memorandum of Understanding to raisefunds and build a facility in partnership withTrinity. This facility will allow us to serve 100students from Hartford in the sameintensive way for years to come.As we look ahead, we know we couldn’thave experienced such success without yoursupport, commitment, and belief in ourprogram’s mission. A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIRDear Friends of Capitol Squash,I am both honored and excited to have been elected by my colleagues to chair the board of directors of Capitol Squash.I succeed David Kinsley, whose energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, and discipline over his term as chair have molded thissmall not-for-profit organization into a model for squash and education organizations across the country.David and the board have created a successful and sustainable organization, but it is the brilliant, dynamic leadershipof Meg Taylor and the caring, dedicated work of the staff that has made Capitol Squash great. It is a real pleasure tosupport their work and watch the amazing effects it has on the young people who bring Capitol Squash’s missionto life.Fifty-five years ago I arrived on the Trinity campus as a freshman from a small steel mill town in WesternPennsylvania. I was introduced to squash on this campus, a sport I may have heard of but knew almost nothingabout. I happily played the sport for the next forty years.
