CAR GATES/CAR DOORSOVERHEAD HEIGHTHEADROOM HEIGHTVertical slide-up car gates allow fullaccess to the car opening width andheight. Five types as shown below. The appropriate type depends on theoverhead height/headroom height ofthe shaft. Vertical slide-up gates can bedesigned for use with most shafts, including those with limited overhead height.Two-Section Car Gates/Car DoorsThese are used when there is limitedoverhead height. Required overheadheight for 6 ft. (1800mm) high twosection gate, to clear the open gate, is1.5 times landing door opening height, plus 6 in. (150mm) to the nearest overhead obstruction in the shaft, measured from the top landing door sill. Iflanding doors have different openingheights, use largest opening height. Each of the two panel sections is adifferent height.Single-Section CarGates/Car Doors, SolidPanel, Full-Car-HeightRequired overhead height, to clear theopen gate, is 2 times landing door opening height, plus 2 in. (50mm) to thenearest overhead obstruction in theshaft, measured from the top landingdoor sill. LANDING DOORSPANELCONSTRUCTIONCLASS OF LOADSteel Plate Door F10SThis door, reinforced and welded formaximum durability, presents a flushappearance on the roomside. Thepanels are heavy-duty 12 gauge(2.5mm) plain steel plate with strongrigid steel framing and steel reinforcing stiffening ribs every 24”/610mmon center. The bottom edge of theupper panel has a resilient astragal. The top edge of the lower panel has atrucking sill. The doors are 1.5 hourfire-rated. Two hour fire-rated doorsare available.Steel Plate Door F10SFor Biparting and Slide-down doors, door trucking sills are designed tomatch the load capacity and loadclassification of the elevator/lift.Following is a condensed explanationof these classifications:Freight elevator shaft walls are usually of masonry construction. Someshaft walls are drywall. Peelle offersfreight elevator doors that are firetested and approved for installationin masonry and drywall shafts.Class A: General Freight Loading.Material is moved on and off the elevator/lift manually or by means of handtrucks only. No concentrated loading ispermitted. Minimum capacity is basedon 49 pounds per square foot (240 kgper square metre) of inside net platformarea. Single piece loads are restricted to25% of the rated capacity.Freight elevator landing doors are tobe installed on four-sided entrancedoor frames, fabricated from structured steel. For drywall, Peelle door frames orthe Peelle drywall interface kits arerequired. Those door frames or drywall interface kits include mountingbrackets for attachment of frames todrywall. These door frames also havejamb extensions running to the beamabove.Class B: Motor Vehicle Loading.Solely for carrying automobile trucks orpassenger automobiles. Minimumcapacity is based on 30 pounds persquare foot (145 kg per square metre) ofthe inside net platform area.Projection sills for trucking arerequired for slide-up doors and arefurnished by the building contractor.Class C1: Industrial Truck Loading. The elevator is permitted to carry aforklift along with the load. However, the total of the load and the forkliftmay not exceed the rated capacity ofthe elevator/lift.PLAN CROSS SECTIONALFlush Face Roomside12 Gauge Plain SteelDoor Finishes/MaterialsPlain steel doors Baked on Powder Coat finish Plain steel with factory-appliedstainless steel fascia cover (roomside, for aesthetics).(refer to page 8)Stainless steel doors Complete Stainless Door assembliesincluding stainless door rails, doorpanels, trucking sill, and structuralmembers (refer to page 8) – choice ofIP54/NEMA 4 (moisture) orIP56/NEMA 4X (corrosion) hardware. Stainless panels onlyClass A4SHAFT WALLS ANDDOOR FRAMESClass C2: Industrial Truck Loading. For this classification, a forklift isnormally not carried by the elevatorbut may be used for loading and unloading. While this classification does notaffect the rated capacity, the fact thatthe elevator does not carry the forkliftdoes permit exceeding the ratedcapacity during the loading andunloading. During elevator movement, the rated capacity may not be exceeded.Class C3: Other Loading With HeavyConcentrations. (not shown)Where forklift is not normally used.Loading is determined on the basis ofactual loading conditions, but not lessthan that required for Class A loading.Class BGENERAL FREIGHT LOADINGWHERE NO ITEM INCLUDINGLOADED HAND TRUCK WEIGHSMORE THAN 25% RATED CAPACITYFORDRYWALLONLYMOTOR VEHICLEAUTOMOBILES, TRUCKS,BUSESClass C1PEELLE FOUR-SIDEDENTRANCE DOOR FRAME(see page 16)Class C2INDUSTRIAL TRUCK LOADINGWHERE FORKLIFT IS CARRIEDWWW.PEELLEDOOR.COMINDUSTRIAL TRUCK LOADINGWHERE FORKLIFT IS NOT USUALLYCARRIED, BUT IS USED FOR LOADINGAND UNLOADINGNEW EQUIPMENTGUIDE 306.V1

LANDING DOORSSELECTION FACTORSPeelle offers freight elevator doorsand gates for practically any application. The size of the opening and themethod of operation for the doorsand gate should be determined bythe size and weight of materials to becarried by the elevator, as well as themethod of loading and whetherfreight handlers or other passengerswill ride on the elevator.Door SizePeelle landing doors are designed toallow full access to the car openingwidth and height. Peelle recommendsdoor size 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. high(2500mm by 2500mm) or larger.Power OperationPower door operation is desirable fordoors 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. high(2500mm by 2500mm) and larger.Power door operation is also desirablefor doors in heavy traffic applications.Where door size is small and usage isinfrequent, manual operation is satisfactory. Peelle manual doors arearranged for future power operation.Materials and FinishesFor corrosion or wet environments, stainless steel doors are available.Roomside stainless fascias are available for aesthetics. Peelle can supplystock door hardware and controlroom equipment suitable for mostenvironments, such as NEMA 1 orNEMA 4.Door TypeEach door type has specific featuresto accommodate specific verticalmeasurements in the hoistway shaft.See chart on page 10.Biparting TypeBiparting doors are selected wherethe efficient use of hoistway space isimportant. The panels move inopposite directions and counterbalance each other, with the upper panelmoving down and the lower panelmoving up during close operation.Biparting doors do not require a sillprojection.(See DOOR/GATE TYPE CHART Page 10)Hoistway Vertical SpaceThe type of biparting doors useddepends upon the space available inthe hoistway shaft. Types of biparting doors can be made for use withshort floor heights, shallow pits orlow overheads and still allow fullaccess to the clear opening width andheight of the door opening, and to thecar opening.Regular Biparting DoorsA Regular Door consists of a upperand a lower panel of equal height. Aregular door is used when the floorto-floor dimension equals or exceeds1.5 times the opening height, plus 6in. (150mm). The overhead height forthe top landing door must equal orexceed 1.5 times the landing doorheight plus 4 in. (100mm), measuredfrom the top landing door sill. Thepit depth for the lowest landing doormust equal or exceed 0.5 times thelanding door height plus 6 in.(150mm), measured from the lowestlanding door sill. These height anddepth clearances are to be effectivefor the width of the opening plus therequired return space on each side ofthe opening.Pass-Type Biparting DoorsPass-Type Doors are used when thefloor-to-floor dimension is less thanthe 1.5 times the opening height plus6 in. (150mm) required for regulardoors. The upper panel at the shortheight landing is offset so that whenopening it slides behind the lowerpanel of the door at the floor above.Due to this offset, the lower paneltrucking sill is wider than for a regulardoor. The minimum floor-to-floor heightfor pass door is equal to door opening height plus 24 in. (610mm).The pit depth and overhead heightfor pass doors is the same as aregular door.Extended Sill BipartingDoorsExtended Sill Doors are used withPass Doors for the other floors thatdo not have short heights. Extendedsill door has a regular door upperpanel and a pass-type door lower panel.WWW.PEELLEDOOR.COMTelco Upper HalfBiparting DoorsTelco upper half door consists of anupper panel made from two separatepanels which telescope upward. It isused when the overhead is less thanthat required for regular or pass typedoors. The minimum overhead is equalto 1.25 times landing door openingheight plus 8 in. (200mm).Compound 2:1 Regularand Pass Biparting DoorsCompound 2:1 door consists of a lowerpanel that is 1/2 the height of theupper panel. It is used when the pit isless than required for regular type door. The minimum pit depth is equal to 1/3times bottom landing door openingheight plus 4 in. (100mm). Compounddoors are available in both a regulartype and pass type. The pass typerequires the same minimum floor-tofloor height as the standard pass typebiparting door.Slide-up/Slide-down TypePanels on Slide-up doors move in thesame direction and require a counterweight. Slide-up doors are selectedwhen it is desirable to have all panelsmoving in a same directionduring closing.Two-Section/Three-SectionSlide-up (to open) Doors(Telco )Two-Section and Three-Section slide-updoors offer easier handing and installation than single section doors plus theyrequire less overhead and floor-to-floorspace.Single-Section Slide-up(to open) DoorsUsed if there is enough clear verticaldistance to accommodate the doorbetween the projecting building sill andthe underside of the projecting landingsill on the floor above.Single-Section Slide-downType (to open) DoorsSlide-down doors are used at the toplanding when there is extremely lowoverhead space.5NEW EQUIPMENTGUIDE 306.V1
