The class will focuson how to create the illusion of 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional surface. Using specimens from theDesert Museum collection, you will explore the behavior of light as it hits a 3-dimensional object. With carefulobservance, you’ll look for highlights, soft turning edges vs. hard edges, cast shadows, and reflected light. Othersubjects you will explore are perspective, both linear and atmospheric. Learn how these drawing techniques canbe effectively rendered with simple pencil and paper. This class will also cover painting fundamentals suchas composition, blocking in, wet-into-wet, glazing, impasto, blending, varnishing, as well as quick and easytechniques on how to move, delete, or rearrange elements in your painting. Give up total control, get a little abstract, add texture and variety and a spark of interestto your watercolor paintings as you let the watercolor surprise you and help you create art with a greaterexpression and impact. You will learn about professional silk dyes, how to mix, apply and set the dye using two ageold techniques: The Arashi Shibori technique where you wrap the fabric on a pole to create a design, and theSerti method where you paint directly on stretched fabric to create more intricate paintings. The instructor willpersonalize both methods to meet the needs of each student, making the studio time fun and challenging forsomeone who desires instant gratification and for the person who prefers a more detailed project.
