McFarland outlined anumber of data points including that Addison has the fifthhighest hospitalization rate due to pediatric mental health, the third highest hospitalization rate due to adolescentsuicide and intentional self-injury, and the highest ratefor emergency room visits due to adolescent mentalhealth in DuPage County. At the end of her presentation,McFarland reiterated that there is hope: the numbersdemonstrate a problematic trend, but there is room toimprove.“Those numbers are all individual kids to us. It feels likewe are seeing their mental health struggles more andmore,” said Head of Teen Services Elizabeth Lynch. As the lights turned back on, teens, parents, communityorganization representatives, and library staff mingled ateach table, igniting quiet but passionate conversations.Around the room, participants shared personal anecdotesand expressed their concerns about mental health as itrelated to their own lives and loved ones. Some smiledand laughed; some nodded intently as they listened toanother’s story. While each table’s conversation differed, each group found common ground. One thing participantscould easily agree on was the importance of changing theperception of mental health issues.Read the full story on the library’s website mental-health6Learn about Raspberry Pi through fun robot-controllingcoding techniques and other cool projects.July 2-5 2:00-3:30Spa LabLearn how to mix your own face mask, stay healthy, and treat yourself right.July 2-5 2:00-3:30TheaterThe Chicago Youth Shakespeare Ensemble andNEDFYS will show us how everyone can use a littledrama in their lives with improv and theater games.July 9-12 and 16-19 2:00-3:30Escape RoomHelp us build an escape room from scratch.July 23-26 and July 30-Aug. 2 2:00-3:30Zine CreatorFind your inner poet or artist with games and prompts. We’ll select our favorites to publish as our summer“zine.”July 23-26 and July 30-Aug. 2 2:00-3:30Mock TrialBe a witness, judge, lawyer, or the accused.
