As COVIDrestrictions have continued to ease, I hopeto have the chance to meet those of youwhom I’ve not had the opportunity yet,and that that positive energy of gatheringtogether in community continues to flow.In these short nine months I’ve been withTemple Emanu-El, I have felt so welcomed, and have gained a terrific sense ofwhat this community is all about. ConnectionsMy Take on TorahBoth last week’s Torah Portion Vayak’hel and this comingweek’s portion, Pekudei deal with the building of theTabernacle (Mishkan) that would be the transportablesanctuary where God’s spirit could travelwith the Jews on their long journeytowards liberation.God’s instructions to Moses wereextremely specific and detailed thesparking metals, the weight of the metals, the lush textiles to be used for the priests, and even specific design of the tent.everyone can do something.” So it was in the creation ofthe Mishkan. People were directed to donate the variousmaterials that would make up this traveling sanctuary.People contributed in ways they could—but no one could do it all. Moses beganto teach the Jews that responsibility“No oneto give from one’s heart is part of theresponsibility that comes with beingcan do everything—free. As the Jews together created thisbut everyoneMishkan, along with the effort came asense of community and accomplishment.can do something.”I wondered why so much detail? Well, there was that problem with the GoldenCalf. Perhaps it was recognized that leaders need to teachtheir people HOW to be liberated, how to work together tocreate not a thing to worship---but a place for communityprayer and spiritual wellness. The Jews were learninghow to be free and responsible. We continue that learningtoday. It is a never-ending process. One explanation for the details that were included in thesetwo sections is that all of them are really about describingthe accoutrements of the First Temple, which was builtsome 400 years later. It does remind me of the importanceof ‘treating our houses of worship with respect and love”.I think about our “20 20 Vision Project” that is about reconstructing our Temple House in a way that meets ourneeds and visions of today. Nothing stays the same and sowe too need to contribute to the ever-evolving concept ofa holy space both physically and spiritually. The other thought that came to mindwhen reading through these portions andexplanations came from a newsclip I saw last night relatingto Ukraine. When he was elected, Zelensky says “I waselected to be you president—but all of you—you—you andyou are president too. “ I think Zelensky is a gifted leaderwho understands a lesson from this portion. It’s clearthat no leader—no detailed direction is enough unlesseveryone believes in their own sense of power and abilityto take a role and to lead in his or her own way and time-to contribute to the common goal. Gifted motivate theirpeople do that.In thinking about this portion, I was also reminded ofthe adage that says: “No one can do everything—butSisterhood Judaica ShopOne of the ways you can help our Sisterhood raise some of themoney we contribute to our Temple, Religious School and many otherbenefactors, is by shopping at the Temple Emanu-El Judaica Shop.We are one of the few remaining Judaica shops in the San FranciscoBay Area.We have an ever changing supply of gift items for B’nai Mitzvahs and allthe Jewish Holidays. We also have everyday Jewish needs, including awide selection of Shabbat and yartzeit candles, books, and jewelry. Our Judaica Shop is open most Sundays from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM,most Fridays after services and by appointment. ConnectionsA Ritual Committee AWho are we?We are created in the image of the Divine, understandingthe difference between right and wrong. We are thechildren of Adam and Eve, cast from the Garden of Eden.We are the survivors of the flood of Noah, the righteousfew among the wicked. We are the descendants ofAbraham, Isaac, and Jacob, of Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, andRachel, children of the covenant. We are the people of thetribes of Israel, scattered throughout the world.Myriad are the identity statements wecould add to this list, but the profundityof the one in the approaching Passoverholiday supersedes them all: We areslaves made free.Nor are oppression and slavery confined to stories fromthe past. Even today, within the borders of our owncountry, examples of the worst injustices are shockinglyeasy to find. And as Jews, we know it is our duty tostrive to right these wrongs. They are not something thathappen exclusively to ‘other people’ – no, we see modernenslavement mirroring our own story, our own need toescape it, and we know that not until everyone is free, isanyone free.At Temple Emanu El Second Night Seder,we have the tradition of, after listing theAbsent is the voiceTen Plagues God afflicted upon Pharaohof those who serve,in the days long ago, naming additional, even if they are the“modern” plagues.
